Tommorrow I'm planning on going to Gurston Down near Salisbury to watch the Downhill and Luge organised by SSSprint Oxford Stunt Factory.
There is a map at: http://www.gurstondown.org/calendar.htm#lo Last time I went it was fun just standing around watching riders launch themselves into bushes. And I had a scoot around too. Starts at 9 as its getting dark early. generally ends in a pub nearby.

Hells tits, don't any of you people have jobs? Actually, not a bad idea, meeting up on the last Friday before winter really kicks in. Can't make it until around 6.45 p.m., but I'd be up for a fizzy sherbet or two in the lemonade shop.
Mr. Stride, do you have a sufficient stock of Deathbox beanies to get us all through the winter months?

Don't know if everybody is aware but the clocks go back on the 25th October....basically it spells the end for the evening sessions at Hyde Park..
that basically means next week is going to be the last one for the winter...
what i am proposing is shifting to Friday, maybe even trying an earlier start like 3:00 or 3:30 and then going for a few beers basically to celebrate the sucesses of the summer....ok improvement by everybody and a World championship win by Mike Stride..
what say everybody

The Blackburn analogy doesn't work. It's irrelevant and football's a girls' game.
And what's this "would have been" rubbish? If Bobby Piercy hadn't DQ'd and then lost to Alva by a fraction of a second he would have been in the final? The fact is, he did DQ and he did lose to Alva, even with his fancy ass toys and Dukla-Prague away kit. Because Alva was the better skater on the day. Fact (as Mr. Brent might say).

Chequbooking

slightly odd analogy, but take blackburn rovers a few years back...
Jack Walker "bought" the premiership, buying the best players around....
so you can "chequebook" you way up......
i agree that you must have a modicum of ability to stand half a chance though.
anyway, if Bobby Piercy hadn't DQ'd in his first run and then failed to beat TA by 7/10ths of a second, in his second run...it would have been a Piercy/Hester final

Mr. K,
Quote: "I believe that it is possible to 'chequebook' yourself to a certain standard."
Nope, not without the skill (which, as you point out, often comes from practice). If the "chequebooking" theory were true, then putting me in a Formula 1 racing car or giving me the best skis/surfboard/guitar in the world would make me a better racing driver or skier/surfer/guitarist (delete as applicable). It doesn't work like that. I admit that top of the range equipment sometimes makes a difference to those with the necessary skills and that inferior equipment can hold back a person's development in any given discipline, but you still need (or have the ability to develop) the talent in the first place. You can give me all the training in the world, along with the best running shoes in the world, and I can guarantee you that I will never, ever be able to run a marathon. Because I don't have what it takes. It works like that with slalom skateboarding too. Some people have it, some people don't, and no amount of expensive equipment will change that. I like Michael's idea of everybody racing on the Bahne complete because I believe it would prove my theory. Michael, Edwin, Paul P, Simon L, Leon, Chris L and Chris C would all still be the top British riders at this moment in time. (Apologies if I've forgotten anybody else who should be in that list!)

VOR,
i believe that it is possible to "chequebook" yourself to a certain standard. But what tends to happen along the way, is that you spend a fair amount of time "practising" on The next Greatest thing, that when you return to your original "basic" set-up find that your Skill level has improved.
Better equipment can make a good racer an great racer, or a great racer, virtually unbeatable. Although i wasn't there to witness it, During the world's Luca tried out a Roe, and couldn't make the course, he kept blowing out 2/3rds of the way down, as he was generating too much speed, compared to his solid deck.....
imagine if Alva had been riding a composite deck when he raced Hester....its possible that the history books would read differently

While I'd like to believe it was all down to cash and equipment (I'd have an excuse for being crap then), I'm afraid it's all down to skill. If you have any doubts, try and track down some footage of Tony Alva racing slalom on a solid wood (pre-ply) Logan Earth Ski set up with Tracker trucks and Road Rider wheels.

Stock hmmmmm... At the next race what I could do is give a prize to the the racer with the fastest time on lets say a Bahne Complete, which I could lend out. This could work in the Jam format easily as that time could be recorded.
Personally I think its skill that counts. And cash. What is interesting is that the wheels on a Bahne Complete are world beaters, and wheels are possibly the most important pieces of equipment, unless nyone has thoughts. There were racers at Morro Bay on Bahnes with Radikal trucks, which is a diverse as you can get.
As for Blindfolds, I ike that idea. can we also spin the competitor round at the top of the start ramp?
