NCL, (like the initials!) a 5' board maybe a little too long for serious bombing but can be a dang fun board for carving. With the exception of DHB member Rookie who rides his 57" ? Wicked Wonder with Gumballs down pretty much any hill around, I am not sure I know of anyone killing it on a board that big. From what I have seen most of the true speedboards are in the 40's (inches) range. Like the previous poster said, hit the home made board forum for some better advise than this.

hey im just beginning my search to build up my first authentic longboard. I have a short flexy sector 9 right now, but i need to feed my hunger for downhill speed. I'm thinking something around 5'' or so but any recommendations for: type of wood, shape, building techniques, trucks, wheels, and bearings that would be suitible for this type of application would be much appreciated.

Scuba Steve: Welcome to the rest of your life bro! Don't get me wrong, street skating is awesome and the tricks skaters are doing are super gnarly and amazing but you can only throw yourself down on a flight of stairs some many times in your life....Longboarding, on the other hand, can be done for as long as you can stand up and have some balance. As far as the stoke of going fast and carving up or bombing a big hill, well, to me it is still just the best! Last night myself, local DHB'er Evan and new DHB'er Doc Tommy from Winston-Salem went out on what the local crew calls "Night Patrol"...bombing quiet neighborhood hills in the dark and hitting all the uptown hills. One of the spots we road last night is this huge drive through book drop lane at the new library built on the side of a hill. I would swear the architect that designed it was a longboarder because this thing is sick steep and fast and has this killer left hand/right hand turn at the bottom around the parking lot and out into the street. Talk about a serious rush.
That Sector 9 pintail should be a great board for a while but you will probably want to expand your quiver down the road to include a speedboard like a Landyachtz, Rayne, Big Red X, or if you can get your hands on one, a Bozi Mad Bomber II. That board was my first real carving,hill bomber, and is a favorite among many of the core DHB crew. The Big Red X is a serious speed board and is so stable at high speed it's amazing. I have it set up with Randal DH trucks but will soon be switching to Radikals when they get here. I recently got a Landyachtz Evo (same board as Evan was riding last night on the bigger hills) and that is a great board as well. You can set up with Randal DH's for high speed stuff or with Randal II's 180's for more of a carver/hill killer board. Either way it is fast and stable, just more turny with the 180's. Rayne was one of the sponsors of the recent DHB Dixie Cup race and the deck they donated for the prize pool was SICK! Noah Heinle won it and I have not heard if he has set it up yet. It was a drop through deck like my Big Red X.
The biggest advise I will give to any new longboarder is this: no matter how dorky it may make you feel, wear a HELMET! I know, I know, No street skaters wear helmets, but let me tell you from experience, had I not had a helmet on several times I would be typing this post with a stick in my mouth...or worse, not typing it at all.

Well i just order a sector 9 pintail. It should be here tomorrow or monday but thats not the point. The point is I'm like any other beach side kid i surf,skateboard,and play in a band but everyone else who skateboards does tricks and i've never been into tricks just taking my shortboard skateboard as fast as i can down the 5 huge hills around my house. I love surfing but dont have to the time to find a ride there and back everyday. A few months ago my friend told me if i love surfing for the feeling of moving around on the wave and have 5 huge hills around my house i should get a longboard skateboard. He told me you get the same stoke from longboarding as you do from surfing. Then he let me ride his around on a flat street and i loved it. Really though what is the stoke like on a longboard on a big hill because on my hook ups trick board i find the stoke to be awesome and the faster i go the better. Any thing about the stoke and any tips about the sport would help me out.

My brother LENNY (whats up bro.) is right it does not effect performance just your concentration. 9 times out of 10 even though it sounds like it is the bushings it is really the pivit cup making all that noise. A verry small squart of wd40 in the pivit cup NOT ON THE BUSHINGS will clear it up instantly and give you a smooth & sillent ride. I listened to the ehh eh ehh eh for far to long before I fixed it in a few seconds. It works, so why wait.

Noisey bushings could be caused by humidity and/or cold. I had a slalom session this weekend and all of us bushing squeeks! Not to worry, though; it does not affect performance.

Hi
i got my longboard almost 2 weeks ago and i had a little time to carve and bomb around before the snow was falling, now im carving in my basement but my bushings are noisy, theyre doing :squeesh-squeesh. Is it because they are moisty or new? My friend bought a skateboard at Halloween and it does the same thing.

In August 2006 Dave Cornthwaite will push off from Perth, Australia and roll 5000 miles around the coastline until he reaches Brisbane. Dave will be skating on a carbon fibre Rolls Rolls longboard and this record-breaking journey, dubbed BoardFree, is in aid of three charities - The Lowe Syndrome Trust, Link Community Development and Sailability Australia – which lengthen, enrich and improve the lives of children worldwide.
If you're in doubt as to the seriousness of this expedition, don't be. In the spring of 2006 Dave will be merely 'warming up' for Australia by skating John o’Groats to Land’s End. It's going to hurt, but it'll hurt a lot more if no one donates anything!

the moon is full tonight or pretty close. just got back from a 3.5 mile cross town trek. i could feel the draw from the luminescent ball of cottage cheese as i hugged around the bottom of market and fourth. for a few hundred feet i tolerated the rhythm provided by a thumbtack embedded in my kryptos. the thirty second notes were fun for a while. as i inched back into town i pushed up hepburn street and was struck by a woman's flicked cigarette as she drove by in an oblivious hurry. i opted not to hit pep-pep hill due to it's brevity and night time shadiness. i was delayed on high street when a dog ran out in front of me. i dont think it even heard me coming. up through the hospital to the top of campbell. the last 1/2 mile my board and i were pulled down the mellow slopes of hollywood cirle and we were spewed forth into the red brick spillway that carried us to the front steps of our home. the buzz in my feet induced by the bricks was so intense it actually tickled and the surreality of the lunar evening was more than evident in the shadows and highlights of my crooked grin.

I am a proud mongo pusher. Like Cab, Danforth and other power skaters. Jake Phelps came up with this mongo foot crap and he doesn't realize how dumb it is. Sometimes they think anything cool HAS to come from california. He talks about style but look at all the froggin' going on in thrasher (grabbing frontside between the knees). I don't knock froggin' too much but the mongo push thing is kinda stupid as well. Different people have different styles, thank goodness.

Hi all, I live in Montreal, Canada and next week im gonna get my board, its a
sector 9 island hopper (37 1/2 x 8 3/4"). This board is pretty flexy and im very familiar with "normal" skateboards, so any advices with turning with a flexy board or hills locations in Montreal would be greatly appreciated. (I have the whole winter to practice in my basement.)

By The Way...Mongo Pushers Can Kill It ...

Even though regular pushers have an advantage especially when foot braking or pushing for speed, some of Mongo pushers can kill it too....Cbark, one of the best slalom skaters in the World pushes mongo and can freakin ride.
I push mongo even though this year I have been teaching myself to push regular as well. It takes some practice but even mongo pushers can foot brake at speed if the slide their rear fit forward a bit before unwaiting to brake.
When pushing Mongo on my Downhill rigs or long boards I try to shift my rear foot more central on the board and then slide it back as step on. On my big Red X for example, I almost center my foot in the middle of the board to better control the front in when I am pushing hard for speed. As soon as I step on I slide my rear foot back and go right into my tuck.

For the last several months all the skating I have done has been to either get ready for the Dixie Cup races or to practice my slalom. Not a session has gone down in all this time that didn't involved cones, practicing, or setting courses. Though that has been very rewarding to this newbie in the slalom world it has taken a great deal of my time.
Tonight was different. Tonight, I just road! No cones, no practicing, no timer, just me and my board. Tonight, I broke out my trusted old friend, my Bozi Mad Bomber II with 180 mm Seismics and big ol Avilas and just hit up downtown. It was great just to get out and carve, bomb, and slide, for the FUN of it! The book drop at the new library was my spot of choice as I kept bombing it faster and faster working the bottom left hand right hand turns around the parking islands wheels screaming as the tried to break free. It was awesome!
Riding tonight was FuN....just plain fun! Me, the board,the pavement, and gravity! It rocked!
Though the Dixie Cup was an awesome experience and I missed riding with my slalom buds it was great just to get out and do what brought me back to this sport three years ago- Just riding for the FUN of it!
Stoked to the max I am, stoked to the FReakin Max.

Sorry I was so sensitive. It seems as every where I turn some "Expert" is tyring to tell people how they are skating wrong. I am glad you clarified you remarks and I realize that it was not intended the way it seemed.
We had a fantastic turn out for the 22nd annual "Turkey Jam" at the EZ7 ditch yesterday, loads of youngsters turned out and some of them had real promise. There was a 4 year old that was really going all out. Their skating, was a reminder that there is another generation coming up out there and we are the ones that help guide them into a better understanding of how their skills can be fun or ... commercial.

Dude -- I was just horsing around. The whole "mongo pushing" thing just never ceases to amuse me. No harm done. No offense taken. I've been mongo pushing for 30 years. I'll admit -- it is ugly as hell!! haha. I've even been pushing normal a bit, but I'll tell you, it's hard to retrain myself after all this time. I'm doing it for pure aesthetics.
