Cones can make you take lines you'd NEVER draw free-carving (or longboarding). Of course it's pure stoke to paint on a blank canvas, but obstacles such as cones (or curbs and islands) push the learning curve and require you to NAVIGATE. Just a tool to push you into arcs you just plain wouldn't draw otherwise. (For reference-I free-ride more than run cones.)

Just to set the record straight..................
The said parking lot is about 2-3 football feild's in length and we set the cones for a giant GS course with hard turns and fun! No slalom Here Just LONG BOARDS!!

I had always been a fan of 999 even though I grew up with the hardcore 80s. The town was small but had a good scene with lots of respect for the early bands. Anyway I was working my way through Eastern Europe and happened to see a flyer in Prague for a 999 show. This was in 99 or 2000, I forget. Anyway the band was playing a local club called the Roxy for a small sum of money, about $3 American if I recall. What a blast that was. Pogo done old style. Mohawks 16 inches tall. Beautiful women everywhere, the best beer in the world and an old school punk band fatter, slower and with less hair but still rocking like they meant it.
Two days later I went to see Public enemy play in Budapest.
Oh, bye the way, I did have a longboard with me on the trip. Even with the old cobblestones there is no better way to see a city. From Berlin to Budapest it was a great trip.

So myself and 2 other guys are sk8'en at the local Parking lot seting up cones and general dicking arond, it's late, the lots empty, and everyone has gone home. Well a cop rolls in and heres how it goes down.
Cop: Alright how many times have you been told no sk8'en?
Me: Never (truth)
Cop: Well...........you can't city ordinance
Us: ????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?
Cop: (looks around) Well nobody's here and it's kinda
stupid, but you still can't. (looks at the ground) Well I'm leaving, and nobody's here to see you so............................yea................ ........
The End
And that was it nice guy just doing his job. We kept sk8'en and never saw him again.
The week befor myself and another guy were riding a parking garage and ran into a cop going to the top.
Fist thing he says???
Cop: You know I can take your boards and book them into evidence and burn them........how would you like that??
Can't you read? See the signs???
Well we left. What an ASS!!
What to do??? Oh Well.

I love my Sector9 longboard, cruising on sidewalks is a great way to travel. I think the police should understand the difference between reg board and longboards. One is for transportation and cruising, the other for tricks. I hate getting hassled on sidewalks used by rollerblading yuppies, when I am longboarding. Anyone have same problems?

when I was a freshman in college (longboard in tow) "Homicide" hit and our entire floor would turn to the radio station in Lansing and blast that song (15-20 stereos) when it came on. 5 minites later most of us would be back to studying. Happened nightly for a few weeks. Ah, to be old and punk.

Well, many years ago before the whole slalom thing started up ...there was longboarding. Tom Sims was my inspiration.
A story for ya. In 1977, when I was 16, my mom was a secretary at a construction company. For Christmas, she had a 44" oak deck made for me (my template). I rode that "alternate" deck more than my 30" deck and got hooked on the longer wheelbase.
I rode that board at college (MSU 79-83) and then moved to LA. At that point the parks were dying and decks were short and wide. I still rode around LA and thought I was only longboarder still alive.
For years, I had a re-occurring dream of heading down a hill on REALLY BIG dark blue skateboard. the dream always let me feeling inspired but like I was missing something too.
Many years pass and I am down in HB and I see a 60" Powerhouse hanging on a wall. I just about crapped my pants. I called them and they made a thicker version 7/8" for me...with invaders...and kryptos. I later had the Gravity guys add a speedo to this board and I got some 72mm wheels. Well, my life was never the same.
I then refined the powerhouse design and built my own deck, stained it dark blue, changed to RIIs and worked on my skills.
This was about 4-5 years ago, and then I stumbled on NCDSA and got together with a bunch of guys (Sturhan, DT, Paul, etc.) over in West LA.
Well, one day a guy shows up and it's Chaput and he rips every stinking longboard move I could ever imagine (even a bunch of handstand stuff) and blows everyone away. I'm freaked that someone I read about/heard of is even skating with us. We even run some cones and I am able to push my 60" though them. CC jumps on my deck and does the same and I am stoked even more.
Well, a year later, Gilmour shows up at West LA and slalom is reborn and everything changes.
It's funny, but the first newschool LB that I bought was the 44" Powell No Ka Oi. When i was big into the 54-60" decks, I thought it was a twig. A few years later and I m riding 30" slalom boards and the Powell looks like a monster. Perspective.
Good to know that the super tankers, Ed E's, and others have never vanished (Revere any one?) and that there is still a strong pulse for true longboards.
Yes, I still have the powerhouse, my own 60" design and the No Ka Oi, and though I now usually ride 30-33" wheelbases, the monster decks will always be part of my life. Even if they are no longer part of my dreams.
You see, those came true in ways better than I could have ever imagined.

Kryptonic classic 76mm. I've been using these wheels for some time on my longboard in the UK. I like the extra size in order to ride lips and superb downhill stability for carving & speed. The only problem I have is that they cone up real fast on slides. I've tended to go for the 76a durometer, but am thinking of trying out the 82a. Anyone tried these, Whats the verdict??? Is there a noteable difference??? Alternatively maybe someone can recommend me another wheel. Cheers Ade

There is another variation of this trick that really flows nicely. I first saw it done by Laura Thornhill on a Torger Johnson model Logan Earth Ski back in the seventies.
I remember this board being "really big" back then.
Instead of doing 180 slides in a straight line, swing the board around 120 degrees or so and then do it again and again and again. Everytime you do a kickturn you pick up a steady bit of speed which can keep you tracing out a hexagonal path indefinitely. This is best done in a wide open area like a parking lot. You CAN get dizzy though because your body is spinning on a board that's wandering. I might have to do a little video clip of this. It feels really cool and can be done very stylishly with practice.
