Arrested for leaving kids at skateboard park?
On 11/25/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

Associated Press

MEDFORD, Ore. - A couple whose 6-year-old son fractured his skull after his father dropped him off at a skateboard park have been indicted on felony criminal mistreatment charges.

Daniel R. Willis, 44, and June A. Willis, 49, also were charged with child neglect, a misdemeanor, in the October incident.

Daniel Willis said he and his wife were stunned and frustrated by the charges. He said they had no idea it was illegal to leave the boy and his 9-year-old brother s alone at Bear Creek Skate Park.

"I don't think I'm guilty of a crime," he said. "I may have made an error in judgment."

In addition to facing criminal charges, Willis said state Child Protective Services workers told him he could not be alone with his sons. "It's shaken us up pretty good," he said.

Willis said he works in real estate, and his wife is employed part time at a community college. When both parents are busy with work, they often leave the boys alone at the skate park for a few hours.

Oregon law does not set a minimum age for leaving children unsupervised. But if children are younger than 10, prosecutors have discretion to decide whether leaving them alone is criminal conduct.

William Aring Meyer, a former prosecutor who has defended parents accused of neglect, said standards of caring for children are constantly evolving.

"What was acceptable 10 years ago is not acceptable now," Meyer said. "I think it makes it hard to know sometimes what is acceptable and what's not acceptable."

The Jackson County grand jury indictment was released Friday by District Attorney Mark D. Huddleston. The couple are scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.

=============================== ===========

What's really weird about this is that the parents are arrested for NOT being with their kids, and yet now they are PREVENTED from being with their kids...

Would this story be different if the kid was injured at a ballpark, playground, tennis court?

IF you are riding your board around NOT doing any tricks you are usually ok. Me and my friends skate in front of a walgreends over by my school. We tested this theory. As long as we stood there or were just riding we wwere ok. If we started to do tricks as they were comming around the corner we were ok.

No skateboarding!
On 10/11/2007 Ryan wrote in from United States  (139.139.nnn.nnn)

Well I have seen alot of interesting busts. But one that gets on my nerves more than anything else is when one of my buddies is told they are not to skateboard because it is destruction of government property...us. Enlisted skateboarders are at our commanders mercy. The only prospective argument to give is that there is a skatepark on base! Built for us! and yet we are doomed if we show up even slightly scratched. I think it is the attitude they are trying to ban, not the sport. Hell, they say that flag football is ok, yet we have had more injurues from that than anything else. Granted that the park on base isnt the best it had a good mini. I wear all of the required pads. I guess it is the fact that all the other skaters are 14 or 15 years old and I am only a decade older than them.

This alone drives me to skate out in town, im not sure what the law is in Germany, but it has to be better than the one on base. But then there is the outlash that I dont wanna be part of the group, and play flag football with the unit. Um I think they may be right, because I do have my own attitude about what is right or wrong. Skating is right.

The "stunt" I was referring to was:

A) Drunk riding
B) In the dark
C) Into the oncoming traffic head-on

Doesn't matter if you'r on foot, skateboard, rollerblade, tricycle, whatever.

That kind of action deserves a ticket.

Pat, you sir are a racist(or sportist I should say)... I free run, I skate, I roller blade, I bike. I can walk straight up to a cop and say watch this, do a back flip off a wall and he will say "WOW COOL!" I can do a 720 on blades and his jaw will drop. But if I do so much as a Variel Flip by him he will yell and bitch and maybe ticket me. It's just sickening that people like you make such comments like "You diserve it you were doing 'stunt'" Har Har, I'd like to see the day a person gets a ticket for doing a cart-wheel... Wont happen becaue just as stated before on this forum people view skaters as Deranged lunatic kids who do drugs then steal and beat babies for fun... But once again, that's just part of what we do :P (<---A Joke btw...)

So yeah because of all the extremists in our country "stunts" on a board are illigal in nearly all cities. But the attitude people derive from your comments is still annoying... God damn I have a 14 yr old freind who was just offered a major sponsership by Think... I'm so glad he didn't take your advice and "Not do stunts" I wish I would have been more like him when I rollerbladed.

P.S. Pat... You long board, some people skateboard (in the sense we do it for tricks) Kind of dumb to waste 100 bucks on a board ment for rails and tricks and leave it in your closet eh...?

A visit by the sherrif's deputy
On 9/26/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (15.252.nnn.nnn)

Set up a slalom course, just like I do about 3 times a week on a local (closed) road. I'm walking back up to the top of the hill when I see the sherrif's car pull up to the top of the course. As I arrive, he motions me to come over to the car....

Sheriff:
"I saw your car parked here and the cones, so I decided to see what's up."

Me:
"Practicing some slalom -- it's a perfect spot, closed road, no driveways."

Sheriff:
"I'd like to watch you go."

Me:
"Ok, pull your car next to mine so I have room to stop at the end."

I do a run thru the cones, sheriff is watching. I stop next to him.

Sheriff: "That was very impressive!" (Radio call, sheriff talks on radio, I start to walk back to top of hill.) "I've gotta go now"

Me: "OK, please don't pull out in front of me if I'm in the course."

Sheriff: "Will do"

When I first saw him, I thought maybe I had a 25% chance of being asked to stop, but looks like I'm OK to continue in this spot....

Ark. Cop Cleared of Choking Skateboarder
On 7/3/2007 Bruce Brewington wrote in from United States  (63.206.nnn.nnn)

...and now the rest of the story...

(07-03) 08:48 PDT LITTLE ROCK, (AP) -- A police officer who appeared to choke a skateboarder and put two others in a headlock in a video posted online used appropriate force when making his arrests, an internal police investigation found.

The Hot Springs Police Department Internal Affairs Board found the use of force was within the police department's policy on non-deadly force and recommended "no changes to this policy." The decision was released Monday.

Officer Joey Williams confronted a situation that "would have overwhelmed any single officer" when he stopped those breaking a Hot Springs city ordinance by skateboarding on a downtown sidewalk June 21, the report said.

However, Williams was faulted for leaving a handcuffed suspect unattended while chasing another youth in the resort town's historic Bathhouse Row.

Williams has been on administrative leave since the video hit YouTube on June 25. Police said he would return to active duty Thursday in the city's downtown.

"I think it was fair," City Manager Kent Myers said. Witnesses "consistently supported the actions of the officer and his efforts to control the situation."

Video from a business' security cameras shows 10 skateboarders rolling down the city sidewalk at a good clip, followed by Williams, who sprints past the last skater.

A video taken by skateboarders and later posted on YouTube shows Williams on top of one of the skaters, apparently choking him. The video also showed Williams putting another two skateboarders in a headlock, and the officer can later be heard threatening to use pepper spray on a skateboarder lying on the ground.

Police said they arrested Matthew Jon McCormack, 21, and Skylar Nalls, 19, both of Hot Springs, and four juveniles. McCormack faces a misdemeanor battery charge accusing him of pushing or striking a 67-year-old city employee during the melee. Nalls was cited for skateboarding and faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing and obstructing governmental operations.

McCormack has previously disputed many of the police allegations, especially his battery charge. He has said he pulled on the city employee's arm after the man lifted a girl off her feet in a choke-hold.

Hot Springs is a resort town about 50 miles west of Little Rock.

Arrested on Go Skateboarding Day
On 6/28/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

For a different view of what happened, take a look here:

http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2007/06/361512.shtml

In particular, read the eyewitness report about:
A) Where the skateboarding took place (in front of a home for the disabled)
B) How the hooligans on skateboards were tormenting the officer
C) How the main instigator came back to the scene with 10 friends, cameras, etc.
D) How the eyewitness's perception is that National Go Skateboard day is a protest "to take over the streets". (I thought it was just a fun day for all of us to go skateboarding).

At any rate, before we all jump to conclusions about the bad cops, we might want to see what led up to the incident, not just the arrests being made.

The donut shops must have closed early on June 21st.

They need to strap that cop to a skateboard and give everyone in town a turn at choking him til he turns blue & his eyes pop out. Then grind his face into the cement until he is bloody.

Nah.... that's too good for him.

I hope his kids ask for a skateboard for Christmas. That will send him into a never-ending HELL !!

Pat, you're thinking like someone who uses wheels to ROLL on, not someone who uses wheels as a platform from which to ollie/kickflip/varial/shuvit/railslide.

Th at's the issue.
It has been, and will be. (this, aside from the 1960's Police Chief's recommendation against Skateboards in General, which haunts us ALL to this day!)

I'd say, limit the boards by LENGTH. Gotta be 42" or more, with 20" between the wheels. Oh, and wheels must be over 55mm tall. Do that, and, gee, the fun, practical, and OhMyGosh responsible thing to do with such a board is, Um, TRAVEL, as in transportation, which then alludes to No Sidewalks and, "YES PLEASE, May We use your Bikepaths?"....

Of course, the true skater in me says to do this:

Petition!!!

Get as many skaters and friends-of-skaters to sign as possible. Show up with as many as possible. Put a loudmouth with a Megaphone out on the Green, chanting away. Make Noise (positive vocalizations, of course) that's louder than the rollerblader's who got cut-off by the local skaters (Oh, yeah, and recruit the Rollerbladers, too, with the famous anti-totalitarinistic line, "You're Next, DOH!"), don't forget the Techies and their SEGWAY's either. Those are really Scary (Hey, Gyroscopes can fail!).

When the above fails, try the Anarchist's Cookbook for step 3!!

UCSB proposed ban on skateboarding.
On 5/16/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

"Skateboarding and rollerskating are permitted on open walkways
provided they do not constitute a hazard to pedestrians,
bicyclists or disabled persons, disrupt classes or damage

The rules clearly state that skateboarding shall be done without being a hazard to other people ---- so the rules seem OK to me. Maybe what they need is more enforcement of the existing rules, rather than a ban on skateboarding.

It is also not clear from the letter what the nature of the "increase in reported accidents" is. Could it be more skateboarders having accidents themselves? Or more skateboarders involved with accidents with other people? Or more willingness to report accidents or incidents that previously went unreported?

I don't know the layout of the UCSB sidewalks and bike paths, but if it looks like a ban is very likely, you might suggest trading a ban on skateboards on the sidewalks with permission to ride them on the bike paths (currently prohibited from bike paths). Seems to me that it often is the case that skateboarders mix better with bikes than pedestrians.

Or, for the best of everything, maybe suggest that instead of banning skateboards on sidewalks, they allow them on bike paths (and sidewalks) -- and the decreased usage of sidewalks (in favor of bike paths) could reduce the accident/incident rate.

Save Skating on UCSB Campus
On 5/16/2007 Dave wrote in from United States  (169.231.nnn.nnn)

Hey guys. I can't believe that they are actually considering banning skateboarding on campus. Please show up at these meetings (preferably with a skateboard in hand) and show UCSB that skateboarders are good people and that skateboarding is as legitimate a form of transportation as biking. Here is the email that they sent out in case you missed it:

To: Campus Community

Re: UCSB Campus Regulations Applying to SKATEBOARDING

Currently, the use of skateboards are permitted on the UCSB campus
when used for transportation on open walkways, provided they do not
constitute a hazard to pedestrians, bicyclists or disabled persons,
disrupt classes or damage property.

Due to a significant increase in the number of reported accidents
from Student Health and safety concerns raised by the disabled
community and University Police, the Vice Chancellor for
Administrative Services will hold a Town Hall meeting to review our
skateboarding policy.

The meeting will be held in the University Center Harbor Room on May
23 and May 24 from 11:30 - 1:30 on both days. There will be
presentations from Student Health, Public Safety, the disabled
community and others. There will be an opportunity to hear comments
from the campus community at large.

The full policy can be found at UCSB's Policies Home Page.
