So far there are three of us planning to make the trip to SLO for the slide clinic. Can anyone say whether or not Yuppie will be present?

slide board set up
On 4/30/2005 piet wrote in from United Kingdom  (80.177.nnn.nnn)

i think i am right in saying that the falltown guys will share in my veiw of the perfect slide set up, this is
36 inch faltown slide board, there realy is nothing better to slide on, the wheel base is perfect it has ofcourse doulble kick goodness and the length means that you can whip out the best style in your slide, then the deck shape allows maximum control of the board nothing feels nicer than this deck when in a slide. then to get the full amount out of this insane deck you need tight trucks or at least tightish, these can be anything as long as they are quite wide truck as there is nothing more frustaghting than having a board that tips around under you. then you need hard wheels up in the 99A - 101A area as this allows you to pull the fattest smoothest nicest most stylish f#@!ing creamy slides, there is no point going out sliding on a fat ass long board with softish wheels, thats just whack!!!! oh and make sure you get the big wheels for speed, i recomend the deathbox pipe smokers or maybe sergio sliders for peachy smoothness. this is the deffinative slide board indefinatly, watching the faltown guys pulling off some crazy shiiaaaat on these boards, dont get me wrong they were good as f$@k before they got these but they be getting more and more insane every time i go out for a session with them. which is most weeks. i hope this helps in you search for the perfect board, i know this is mine. cheers
keep on sliding

dont go ahead of yourself
On 4/26/2005 Frapps wrote in from Canada  (207.6.nnn.nnn)

i just bought my longboard last saturday and i thought i was invinsible on it, and i was at the top of this big ass hill in North Vancouver called Lonsdale i was at the top where i had just bought my board and i jumped on it after buyin it. I had my left knee on the tip of the board and my right leg lying flat on the board and my hands where holding the tip of the board. I starting goin so fast i was gettin a little sketched cause i was passing traffic. So i went to slow down by standing up and footbreaking, but i was a harsh rookie and i was used to normal sk8s, and at first i couldent find the ground so i stomped down and flew forward and broke both my wrists, it was soo much fun tho after i got casted up at the hospital i went back to the same hill and completed it, but now i have takin my casts off because they where getting in the way of lonboarding, and my boctor is pissed, so the moral of this story is do not think u r invisibale when u first get your board cause i lernt the hardway, the pavment proved my wrong! but dont let it scare u away from boarding, i sk8ed straight outta the hospital with both my hands in casts, i still ride it everywhere, everyone thought it was gunna scare me away form boardin but F#^% that, RIDE 4EVER

I'll post the meeting location for the Slide Clinic in the next two days! I've arrainged for back-up locations for the clinic in the case we get booted from site one.

Johnny Miller has room for campers at the ranch where he lives. If information regarding this is needed, contact me at: "sk8fast@sbcglobal.net"

Bring full safety gear and your fee of $50.00 to the site.

This will be great fun!

I'm thinking about gathering a few peeps and making the road trip from San Diego to San Luis Obispo for The San Luis Obispo Slide Clinic Saturday, May 14th. Who's interested in joining us? Of course, we'll want to make a few stops at some prime skating spots, of course. The round trip might last 3-4 days ... ?

Slide set up
On 4/25/2005 Aengus wrote in from United Kingdom  (193.113.nnn.nnn)

A stiff board of around 34-40 inchs is good, double kick, concave to keep your feet in. Keep in mind the new skool shape is designed with sliding in mind. Trucks tightish unless you want to have slides that whip. With loose trucks you'll nail 180's but they'll be quick and may throw ya. Definitly use tight trucks for predictable slides. Big slide wheels meen you can get a higher speed on average surfaces to facilitate the slide requirements as well. Super G's sliders are nice.

Loose trucks?

Is it best to keep trucks loose
for sliding? Going to use my old
park deck 9.5" x 15.5" Thought I
might run loose trucks and wedge
for slower turning vs tight non
wedged trucks?

I have a Red Kross Black Label Steve Olson Standard Issue. It is 11 inches by 34.5inches with good amount of concave. It rides great especially if you like wider boards. My wheels are my old powell rat-bones that I have had since the 80's and they slide great although they are getting pretty thin now. But Powell is remaking the old rat-bones and I will be needing some new ones soon.If anyone lives in the triad area in NC and wants to go riding drop me an email.

San Luis Obispo Slide Clinic
On 4/19/2005 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (68.127.nnn.nnn)

The San Luis Obispo Slide Clinic will take place Saturday, May 14th, beginning at
9:00am. The meeting location will be announced soon. I'm currently checking three locations to find the best site available.

The cost is still at the introductory price of only $50.00. Inexpensive when you consider that these lessons will make you safer for the rest of your skate life. As soon as the web-site goes up, the price will increase to $100.00. Get in now for half price, and join the fun!

Bring pads, helmet and slider gloves. If you don't have gloves, you can order them on the net. Or simply do a search here and make a pair. We should also have a few extra pairs.

Pay at the event. Contact Cliff Coleman for more information via e-mail at: "sk8fast@sbcglobal.net".

Sincerely,
Cliff Coleman

surrender
On 4/18/2005 RanDom wrote in from United Kingdom  (81.131.nnn.nnn)

Aengus mate, surrender slides are pretty easy, but you do have to get your head round them first, once you've done that it's easy1
Working your way up would be best. Get into a drop knee position with your back knee bent forward to meet you're front foot so you're in a kind of kneeling position, then literally just place your hands on the ground in-front of your board and ride a little way like that with no real weight on them. Over time you can gradually stretch out to an almost press-up position, as you do this there will be more weight on the nose of the board which might cause you to lose control or sometimes go into a nose manual!! To counter act this, make sure your back foot stays as far over the back bolts as you can get away with.
Try to resist coming out of it too quickly and with a bit of practice you can cover whole hills like it1 but you're gloves may not make it thru tho'! There great into colemans, 360's both ways and another move called a rewind but I havn't mastered that myself yet so you'll have to wait for that one!
Grabs are good fun, the nose grab especially as you can do a nose grab into a coleman that, if you tweak it right, will keep spinning so you can get multiple 360's with one hand continuosly down and very little body movement, this one's real hard to get. Mark can get about 5 or 6 rotations out of them but i can only get about 2 1/2 at best, wait for the 'Faltown' video and you'll see what I meen!! Or if your in Cornwall come skate with us and we'll show you how1

Names again
On 4/18/2005 Aengus wrote in from United Kingdom  (193.113.nnn.nnn)

Hey there again fellow friction facilitators, Just another name game question. I've been doin heelside pendulums and trying different grabs, I got the method (underneath and between legs)but... is a tailgrab just that, a tailgrab and what about the nose grab? The nose grab aint been done by me yet but its on the list of to do. Anyone nailed a heelside, front hand down, back hand grabbing the nose across the body?

And how the hell do you surrender without feeling like your gonna eat tarmac.. scratch that one, i know why, need to start working the upper body to facilitate my moves =)

Alternative Stoppage?
On 4/17/2005 MikeR wrote in from United States  (68.226.nnn.nnn)

So I'm learning how to board and I figure the best thing to do is learn how to stop. My friend who got me into boarding has several ways of stopping since he rides barefoot. The first way is he'll pop into a wheelie and use the back of the board to slow him down. Another thing he does is something he calls a "snap turn" where he basically turns on a dime and ends up facing the complete opposite direction. Neither of these I can do, and he says my board is too long and heavy for me to do a "snap turn" even if I were to get good enough to do one.

I asked him what else I could do and he said when you want to slow down just push down on your left foot (I ride goofy, and so do all of my friends...) Does anyone else do this? I'm just wondering if it's an effective way to stop or should I just shell out the money and buy some/make some slide gloves?

Also, I was thinking of some other ways of stopping. What would happen if you're going downhill and feel you're going too fast and decide to jump backwards off the board? Would you still be going too fast to land or would the backward momentum slow you down enough to land without injury?

lush slide gloves
On 4/14/2005 matt wrote in from United Kingdom  (82.32.nnn.nnn)

I always thought it was pointless buying slide gloves when you can just make your own for £8 or there abouts. However, after getting a pair of the lush gloves i dont think i will ever bother with welding gauntlets again. They are heavy and dont fit properly and after every session you always have to replace another peice of chopping board which means more sawing and melting! The lush gloves are like mountain bike gloves and fit really snugly. They also keep your hands cooler and you dont end up with tan lines half way up your arm! The pucks themselves are amazing, hardly any drag while in a slide and because they are velcroed on you can customise their position! And no...they dont fall of really easily! Also the kevlar on the knuckles may seem pointless but after taking a huge tumble i got up to find the material on the back well scuffed. Could have easily been my knuckles! Would well recommend these gloves to the sliders out there! I know of people who have been using the prototypes for almost a year and havent worn out the pucks quite yet!

Lush gloves
On 4/14/2005 Slider wrote in from United Kingdom  (128.243.nnn.nnn)

The new lush gloves are the best on the market hands down. ONly been on sale for a few weeks+are leagues ahead of the competetors. Designed specifically for sliders and i understand they've been developed by their team riders and tested to destruction. The main puck is made from some super hard poly plastic that will take years to wear out. They also look p.sick too! Ive tried them and they rule. V.nice- would reccomend them to anyone who wants to take their sliding on a level
