Thank you guys!
The surf ball is great. No sphere thing and "Daddy, why are you cutting my wobble board?". You will see me in the hardware store tomorrow.

Balance Board
On 8/25/2006 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Hi Jonathan,

thanks for the idea. I will try this: I will take my kids ordinary wobble board and cut the top off. (The don't like it anyway.) Then I have a bowl or sphere with a rim. I will screw this under a pice of wood and place a mini basketball under it. Next week I will review if it works or if it was just a stupid idea.

balance board
On 8/25/2006 jonathan wrote in from United Kingdom  (64.236.nnn.nnn)

they are a very old circus toy called a rola bola

make one yourself! easy and cheap

sewer pipe about 12" diameter, 10" wide (polythene)
rubber sheeting (thin)
plank o wood to match pipe width

glue and wrap rubber around pipe, gaffer tape edges
put more rubber sheet or use grip tape on plank
wobble away!

or if you are hardcore use a 44 gallon drum and a old seamans trunk/chest - i've seen it done whilst juggling a tennis racket, shot put and a sickle.

Balance Board 360

But why does it come with two different sized balls? And in the video, you see it moving from side to side. Anyone tried a balance board? Is it fun? When the weather is to bad for skating, i go unicycling, but I thought about getting a balance board.

I have seen a side-view picture on the british e-bay site. There is a ball under the board and a ring holds the ball in place. The thing comes with two different ball sizes. There is no picture from underneath. But I bet, that the spehre, they are talking about is simply a concave. The concave will give you a better motion than just a flat plank.

Look in your pet store for dog seat belt harness designed to provide an attachment point to a car's seat belt.

Anyone here skate with their dog? Ive been using a typical 1 inch nylon comfort harness- The kind every pet store sells. Im looking for something a bit more "pooch friendly". Maybe something with more chest padding or nice leather or something reflective... I dunno, just something better.
Any ideas?

Speedometer
On 7/31/2006 Don J wrote in from United States  (64.115.nnn.nnn)

I bought mine off Ebay new, I went to the bike shop, and it was
still cheaper on the Bay about $30 cheaper. I had to make sure the
thing worked though before using it. So either Ebay or bike shop will do,
I have seen a company that makes boards that has one 'built-in', but they arenet willing to sell their speedometer without having to buy a board.

Speedometer advice

Thank you Adam. Yeah, I have the magnet 'in' the hub, I got the sensor as close as I can, but you made a good point. I'll try it again. I was thinking how to re-balance the wheel after the magnet is inserted as well, so good point. Thanks again, (and if you care) I'll let you know.

Speedometer advice
On 7/25/2006 Adam wrote in from United States  (198.144.nnn.nnn)

Don, It's difficult to tell from your picture but is the magnet in the wheel's hub coming close enough to the sensor in the end of the transmitter? The instructions indicate a line near the tip of the transmitter but in your picture that line seems quite far from where the wheel's hub is.

I've set these up on bicycles and the gap between magnet and sensor must be quite small, like 1/8" or less. If you're unable to mount the sensor to your hanger in a position to get close enough to the magnet you may have to mount the magnet (or a smaller magnet) in the sidewall of the wheel itself. Be aware this may require rebalancing the wheel for luge speeds!

Speedometer advice
On 7/25/2006 Don J wrote in from (72.78.nnn.nnn)

I know this is beat to death, but I have to know. FRUSTRATED I have been trying to set up 2 different magnetic speedometers, neither worked, but the shop says they will work for wheels 88mm and smaller. I know theres GPS, but I aint gots $$, so I need something under $100. Ebay is full of these and there are too many. Does anyone have one that works (not built in that I cant buy) what kind and where to get one. Its for Streetluge. I put the little magnet in the wheel hub (where it says) Thanks for any help on this.

I've been using the Mongoose heel straps/bungee's for tow surfing for a few years but my source in Hawai'i is out of stock.
Any ideas on who to contact for the same or similar product?

homemade slider gloves
On 7/11/2006 set wrote in from United States  (24.178.nnn.nnn)

here's some slider gloves i just made.
parts & tools needed:
1 cutting board (thick kevlar plastic type) $6
1 pair of garden/work gloves $5
1 packet of screws $1
1 small hacksaw (i would rather have a jigsaw or something electric, but this cut through like butter, so it worked)
1 screwdriver
1 small sheet of thick ( 1mm ) plastic (this is used on the inside of the glove to help the screws not pull through the glove)

real simple, i started by making paper templates of my "pucks", traced these onto the plastic sheeting and cut out with scissors. then i cut out the traced pucks from the cutting board using the hacksaw. for sanding the edges of the pucks smotth and even i used the sidewalk out front!

here's everything so far:

now to assemble, i placed the the plastic "insert" sheet inside the glove, lined up it and puck on outside, then screwed through the fabric on top of the glove. once the screw was about halfway in i tore the glove up over the screw, inserted the screwdriver into the tine hole and finished. repeated this for each puck. ]
i elected not to use glue to i can change pucks... the cutting board i bought should be enough for 2 more complete sets of pucks.
cutting single pucks for each hand would have been easier, however i wanted more hand movement freedom. in retrospect the small amount of movement gain may not be worth the additional sawing time.

here they are completed. i still gotta test 'em, but they seem very strong and slideable. now i just gotta learn to slide!! (hehe, needed gloves first)

Cheap slide gloves

You don't even need contact cement, just heat the cutting boards pieces until they almost burn and stick them on your gloves!!

Cheap slide gloves
On 6/8/2006 Chris Miller wrote in from United States  (64.128.nnn.nnn)

Get a plastic cutting board and cut out some pucks. Get some $3.00 garden gloves and some contact cement.

Use contact cement to glue cutting board pucks to the gloves. The pucks will occasionally come off, so keep contact cement with you. It's no big deal, contact cement takes like 10 minutes or something to dry.

After you get hooked on having gloves, spring for some Timeship gloves. Joe makes 2 kinds, and they both work great!
