Re: High Tops

Yep, pretty much a fasion thing I would say. Too bad b/c for most types of skating a high top shoe is the best choice. You can still get the Vans high tops (called the old school high top I believe) and I love em'.

high tops
On 10/1/2001 hugh r wrote in from (64.8.nnn.nnn)

Nic,

As "individual" and "non-social" as young skaters have always been protrayed, they are slaves to fashion... That's why skate shoes can sell for over $100 a pair!

Vans still makes a high top skate shoe... HR

Sliding gloves
On 10/1/2001 Nic wrote in from (203.96.nnn.nnn)

I,ve found industrial grade contact cement to be the best/easyiest way to make slider gloves, bonds well to both the leather gloves as well as the chopping board. Apply it to both surfaces, leave for 20min to set a bit, then clamp the gloves/chopping board together overnight, sweet.

High top shoes
On 10/1/2001 Nic wrote in from (203.96.nnn.nnn)

If you look at any mags/vids from the late 80,s it seems nearly all the skaters wore high top shoes, which I would imagine should offer protection for the ankles. Now days everyone seems to use bulky low top shoes, is there a reason for this other than fashion? Was there a reason why high top skate shoes are no longer made?

cheap sliding gloves that don't heat up!
On 9/26/2001 luke wrote in from (212.137.nnn.nnn)

here's a good method of manufacturing your very own sliding gloves, first get a pair of thick gardening or chainsaw gloves and some epoxy resin glue. Next get out into nature and look for a river with GRANITE stones in the bed, wade in and pick some rounded off stones of varying sizes (big & flat for palms, smaller ones for fingers. Key the surface of the gloves with some sandpaper and apply the glue, next put the stones on and leave for at least 2 hours to cure. This is a lot cheaper than buying sliding gloves and works just as well, you do have to replace the stones after a little while, but just peel the last of the glue off and reapply and replace the stone. I find that having less stones on the front hand gives you the ability to grab the board if you need to. I used these at Hot Heels this year and they worked real good and did'nt warm up at all (as well as leaving a white line on the road!)

Are these still made or have I got something a bit unusual?
Looks nice on one of my decks now .

hardshell longboard cases
On 9/10/2001 Repairman Cam wrote in from (63.50.nnn.nnn)

Being that I work in a sporting goods store I checked out some possible longboard cases in the hunting section. They had a hardshell plastic case that was made to hold 2 rifles for around $20. A longboard fit in it nice and snug. They also had a hunting bow case that was even bigger for around the same price that had plenty of room left over inside for pads and gloves and such. Funny thing is, the guys in the hunting department knew exactly what I was thinking of using it for!

Crooks Rails
On 9/10/2001 Grumpy Ol Bastard wrote in from (208.152.nnn.nnn)

Fellas (and/or ladies),
Go get some of these rails! Fun fun fun. solidskate.com carries 'em, don't know about longskate.com. I put a pair of the 20" ones on my Dregs 40. Been doing boardslides on the parking block for like an hour now, grinning like a moron the whole time. It's so "80's" it's scary. They're kinda tall, about 1/2", and they mount with wood screws (anyone seen sex bolts lately?). I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Good going Crooks!

brakes
On 9/6/2001 roger wrote in from (66.51.nnn.nnn)

I could definitely see using brakes on a skateboard as a way for beginners to go down hill that would otherwise exceed their capabilities. Not everyone is interested in the risks of learning slides and foot dragging. Brakes opens up downhill skateboarding to a much wider audience, no it is not hardcore downhill, but it is enjoyable cruising for many.

brakes
On 9/6/2001 hugh r wrote in from (64.8.nnn.nnn)

Mikez, you are absoulutly right on that one! He is learning to slide and can bust some pretty good 25 mph ones... foot braking practice hasn't started yet.

For the brake my thought had been for tuck practice... but a slower hill is probably the best practice... thanks for the input... HR

teach him to slide or foot brake
It only takes a couple weeks to perfect(well thats how long it took me) casue when he eventually needs to learn it'll be like learning to walk again

while i personally think that a brake on a skateboard would make it not a skateboard, but simthing similiar. i probally won't buy one, but i can see a reason for someone to have you. i have skated around the busy streets of san francisco for the whole summer, and in some situations, i brake would be very nice.
