Hugh is right on, a GPS is the easiest and the most accurate way of measuring speed. I highly recommend Garmin eTrex outdoor units (<$100). Very few cars have accurate speedometers and tend to read high, 5mph error is pretty common, few are accurate to within 2mph. GPS is dead on accurate! The only problem with using GPS is if you put it in your pocket it often does not get good reception when in a tuck, works well in back pocket or taped to back of helmet.

After much experimentation I come to the following conclusions:
Guessing usually leads to speeds that are 40% - 50% higher than actual for inexperienced riders... experienced speedboards are much more accurate than this.
Getting paced by a car is usually pretty close depending upon the driver, the terrian, and whether or not the vehicle has proper tires for the speedo settings.
Bicycle Speedo's will work, but are tricky to set up.
Skateboard Speedo's will work but are almost as tricky to set up and the wheel size/rotation settings are extremely critical to getting accurate readings.
GPS units are by far the most accurate means available to the regular guy. Extremely easy to use and not much margin for error. Get one that has a max speed hold function.
A radar gun would be nice, but I have never seen one for sale. A timing system could be rigged too using gates, but that is not as easy to come up with as a GPS.
My two cents... HR

Ok, it's probabely just me ,but i judge speed very well,in fact i just realized that i've done this for a long time.I found a zine article i wrote about an early personal speed record on Sibbald (i still skate there)a four foot slab of oak was shaped(ugly as hell i recall),sixtracks mounted nearly the ends, and borrowed orange Bones,i was wrote this 17-18 years ago ,the run was done a few years before that ,and i guessed the speed at 45 mph, which as it turns out is about as fast as i've been clocked on this hill.Get clocked by a reliable friend, someone who can match your speed in a car,do this a couple times maybe at night,on your fastest hills push your limits, should be easier to remember.I think it's better not to know exactly how fast your run was.

Steve,go into the 'links' page on this site, and pop over to "Hugh's Tutorial".In there you'll find good how-to's on all kinds of nifty modifications for boards, including a speedometer. The Pics and text are easy to follow.

Scabs,
The Pic didn't work, but if they are the 12" cones, we were using them on Sunday in The UK slalom gathering.
Martin D & myself were discussing if they could be cut down, so i suppose its possible

hehehe.. that last bit spawning and dying made me feel all sad. But honestly you've described how it feels at the moment whilst I "try" to run cones, going upstream that is. Probably to do with all the rain and wind we're getting in England.

I buy cones in lots of 100 for 97¢ a piece. Put them on a turntable rig on my bandsaw and trim out the bases to leave an ample lip for support, then I use a sharpened 1" pipe to pop a hole in the tops (which leaves it ridged BTW). With Stevem's assistance we have managed to supply cones to all four corners of this continent. I can not emphasize the importance practicing w/the cones of the correct standard (but cups would be better than nothing at all). The dimension of the finished cone conforms to a post by Simon Levine:
On 4/24/2001 Smokestack wrote in from 62.7.xxx.xxx: Mitch,
Original Tracker cones are worth every penny + they are competition standard ....... BUT
A WARNING TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE CONTACTED BUDDY CARR regarding cones. The cones he has ARE from the original type moulds but he says they are 12" tall ... in which case they are/were not competition standard. Original standard slalom cones supplied by Tracker and Sims, et al, are
5.50" wide 9.25" high (on the diagonal edge) 3.75 oz in weight
There ya' go. Oh god, I'm doing it again. I'll be talking about rules and wheel durometers next. **************************************** ******************** My cone making activities have been curtailed by the work I have been doing on developing a new standard in deck design (not to mention other wheel/truck projects). Some time in the future I would hope that someone would recognize the demand for cones and invest in the appropriate moulds to manufacture them.

I had to improvise for cones as I was w/o this last weekend. I ran to the local discount store and picked up 4 Bags of SOLO 16 oz. red cups (The SOLO's are larger for some reason) and a tube of Clear Silicone Adhesive. for about $13 I had a nice set of cones to practice with. I doubled up the cups HOWEVER I used a bead of silicone about a 1/2 " from the lip of the inside cup then slid another cup on top. Let 'em dry and "VOILA" worked like a charm and I had more "cones" than a sailor on liberty..... Sturdy, you ask? After several solid whacks with my Comet O'Shei there were NO casualties. And they didn't criddle either. I didn't "vent" the top but I will do further research. gimme some feedback if you try it!

WOW! Yeah has anyone else seen these things on tv? what a revolutionary idea! hmm...a skate with four wheels that are side by side in pairs, instead of a straight line. a definitely futuristic concept if you ask me. my grampa always talked about "records" and "vinyl", some form of music like a big black cd. oh wait...vinyl is hip now with all the dj's spinning and scratching ;)
ok enough of the sarcasm. i agree with the guy below....it'd be sweet to see a resurgence of quad skates for recreation and a possible trick sport. i'm a bit tired of rollerbladers hogging the skating spots. some quads in a bowl or half-pipe could be pretty cool. plus there would be the whole benefit of possible new quad wheels out there to work with our skateboards. thanks sketchers for bringing back something different for the kids than rollerblading or pushing those razor scooters at us. another plus is girls on rollerskates are just much cuter than girls on rollerblades :)))

Cones for slalom

Not finding it all that easy here in sunny England to obtain cones for slalom practice, I know a cone should measure 9" in height but was wondering about diameter/width of the base of the cone, so that for the time being I could find a cheap alternative. Obviously too wide a base would have implications especially in regard to tight slalom/cone placement, Cheers.

Yeah mr.scabs, clean installation!
I like the plastic washer idea and will try to adapt my allen head bolt (ease of changing truck/wedge) assembly with this.
The "Nose Guard" looks really cool too. It keeps to the "needle nose" moniker. I'm not near a surf shop and was wondering what it would look like, now I know. Sweet set up.
Thank you for posting.
I just received my new white cutaway and am customizing the grip now. First Turner I have owned without the "grip strip" pattern. I pulled the grip that it came with and am customizing my own shape. I like the idea of full grip on pool, park & bank board; now I'm going to shape a stance piece for my 2001 classic needle nose. I'm flexable about some things, gonna give it a shot...
Thanks again for the image post.

Here`s what I did to my Turner. Plastic washers under flathead bolts. Tightened to just tight. You might see a little dimple and that`s from first tightening them down too much. Looked alright until I rode it and then noticed the dimples. Backed off on the screws and just barely tightened them.
The nose guard is the larger one made by Surfco. Just a light wet sandinding with 1200 grit just barely haze finis. And I mean JUST BARELY. Applied a little glue which is provided and let set 3 minites before applying.
Might be ugly but purely functional. Can be removed with minimal effort. No effects to board ;-)
