returning skaters

Hey Beth, dropped you an email yesterday....

Even though it hurts like hell when I fall, I find I'm in better health and spirits since taking up skating again. Even though I have met great people and skated some neat parks, I still see myself as a soul skater and love to find a sloped parking lot to carve some early Saturday AM when it's quiet. Very therapeutic. Whoopsie, gotta go work now! Take care all.

Starting over
On 3/16/2005 LYnn wrote in from United States  (66.27.nnn.nnn)

Beth,
Skateboarding hurt too much, so I took up Snowboarding and Surfing, and pretty much did just that for about 6 years. Then one day, just for fun, I went down to the Mission Valley YMCA and found that I could barely skate anymore. Well, it didn't matter, cause everyone at the park were so cool, I started showing up every day. It was closer than the snow (bear mt. is 2 1/2 hrs) and it was better than a choppy day of waves. It's always double overhead and glassy at the vert ramp. I found that skateboarding sucks you in. You become addicted. It's my drug. Now that I am racing, it's like snowboarding, but I don't have to get all dressed up and buy a lift ticket.

Santa Monica Trip
On 3/16/2005 Beth wrote in from United States  (63.188.nnn.nnn)

Hi Greta!
Thanks for the reply, sorry to hear you were not well for the trip though! But hopefully the beach was a pleasant place to spend some time. Did you check out any cute surfers? ;-)
Yes, definitely bringing a board with me to CA even though I'll be flying out. That's gonna look adorable, a 36-year-old woman walking on a plane with a '77 Alva reissue and a helmet under her arm!
So you were a returner to skating too...four years and you're still into it, that's encouraging to hear. My email is with this post, please feel free to drop a line if you want to talk about your experiences more...or reply here, either is cool. In fact I'd be interested to hear about anyone's experiences with getting back into skateboarding, esp. if you were away from it for a longer time. I have yet to meet other females in my part of the state who are getting back into it and am still figuring out where to start. If only there were some great banks to skate nearby...but this part of the state is not only flat, builders seem to have a serious aversion to concrete! At least there's a skatepark in the next town with some smaller ramps, and another skatepark in Raleigh that's indoors and offers beginner lessons.
So anyone who wants to share stories and progress reports, please do so!
Beth in NC

Santa Monica Trip
On 3/16/2005 Greta wrote in from United States  (206.173.nnn.nnn)

Hey Beth-

Welcome back to skating! I was a basic sidewalk surfer in the 70's and just got back into it 4 years ago. It's like learning from scratch, and I'm a slow learner, but I'm having a blast. Have fun and keep us posted on your adventures. :)

Unfortunately, on my trip I was sick as a dog with the coughing/gnarly cold and all I could do was sit on the beach. It was such a shame since I had both my boards, park and long board. :( So no skating. I hope your trip turns out much much better. It's relatively flat there and most of the pavement is so smooth, I bet just sidewalk surfing would rule. You could also cruise the Venice boardwalk-fun!

speedboarding
On 3/15/2005 LYnn wrote in from United States  (66.27.nnn.nnn)

Hey Nina-
I was in Switzerland last summer for a Burning Wheels, and the Swiss girls were ripping it up. Then Brunner took me to Rikiblitz on the tram, and we carved down into Zurich until the cops came. Skating in Europe is definitely different than here, but still the same.
I just put together a speed board. It's a comet with Randal DH's and Avilas. It took a little getting used to until I could just tuck it, but having done that, I prefer slalom. There is more going on. You are thinking, cutting, dipping, swerving, and sliding.
It would be great if you could come to the States for one of the bigger contests, like Slalom Week or the Farm.
I'm looking forward to skating with Betty and Meg at the Luna Jam. Looks like that will be a fun race.

I'm going to Mississippi!
I'm really excited, cause I've never been there before. If it weren't for slalom, I don't think I'd ever go there. But why not? Sounds like fun!
Thanks Ricky.

Hey Greta,
Just curious to hear how your visit to Santa Monica went? Did you get to Revere or find any other good places? I'm just getting back into skating (not that I was so great to begin with) at age 36 and am going to Venice CA in August for a week.
Hope you had a blast!

Santa Monica and vicinity
On 2/1/2005 Greta wrote in from United States  (206.173.nnn.nnn)

Speaking of CA (last post), I'm going to be in Santa Monica for a few days the first week in March. Can anyone recommend some mellow hills or banks or parking lots? My old elementary school, Franklin, is under lockdown, as is Revere. I'm skipping the parks (too crowded) and just want to cruise and have fun.

Baby-Steps/Greta
On 1/27/2005 Isabelle wrote in from United States  (209.66.nnn.nnn)

Everyone starts skating in the same "place" and you should compare yourself only to yourself, while taking your own comfort level "baby-steps" to get better.
Learning slow is a good thing, 'cuz you'll skate longer without injury.
Biting off more than you're ready for can be awfully painful and rehab sucks...SO GO GIRL and keep on inching your way up, soon you'll be dropping 13 foot of vert-ramp............time is an amazing thing!

Isabelle,

You are the bomb! You are leading the way for the inclusion of more female skaters in all areas of skateboarding. This is what I have hoped for since I began skating in 1960. It is now taking place with you at the front of the pack. Welcome Girls/Women!

Thanks and much respect for you Isabelle,
