Lynn: Great job in Gruningen- I am going to try to make it next year- I would love to skate with you again soon.
Midgette: Hopefully soon more girls will be coming out. With the opening of a new board shop in town that specializes in longboards and slalom set ups, there have been plenty of boys showing up at our Sunday sessions trying the slalom, but no girls yet. It will happen.
Pink skateboards: saw the ad on the back of my concrete wave and read the description- seems pretty accurate as far as I can tell, when I first started skating I wore boys shoes (too big) with a couple pairs of socks, that seemed to help me out with getting more grip on a big boy sized board, but now that I've been skating I'm really looking forward to seeing this skater girl population grow.
All you womens is "fuelin' the stoke"... If money were no object, it'd be great if all of the skateboard moms and all the women on NCDSA could all get together for a week of downhill, slalom, skate school tricks and tips, parks, pools and sliding.
I wish I could travel more this year, meet more people, skate more terrain, race more, money is just tight at the moment. I'm hoping by next year I will be able to load a SUV full of skater girls up to race with you, Midgette.

I'm also really interested to see what Chris & co. have designed for us female riders. I'm DYING for a board that's an old-school shape (squared-off kicktail, pointed nose) but no more than 8.5" wide/14" wb, CONCAVE and fairly lightweight but sturdy. Something I can turn and carve more easily than the 10" wide board I'm trying to work with now. Fingers crossed that pink skateboards will have what I'm looking for!

You're just ahead of the curve...the stuff you saw posted on the 'fish is all sortof "pre-release", even though the wheels are in final form. The Chaputs sent PINK equipment down to the SD event since they knew most of the students in the class were women.

So what's up with pinkskateboards? I wrote them like a week ago applauding their efforts to designing boards with girls and other light riders in mind. I asked them about the flex on their longboards and queried them about access to trying out their set ups. But nothing back from them....silence... Anyone know whether they're still kicking or starting to go under?

hey ladies i've noticed this part of the forum unfortunately isn't too active!
this year we tried to get enough (only 4-5) female riders to have our own heat at Danger Bay 4, but with no luck! i was the only female wanting to race. the conditions on race day were pretty sketchy (wet and windy) so i only did the run 3 times (pracice and qualifying) and called it quits after that.
As much fun as it is to be riding with the guys it would be awesome to have a female division in hopes that more girls would ride for the fun of it and not be intimidated.
If any of you ladies are interested in coming up for next year it would be awesome to have early input. If there aren't enough girls to do actual heats, it would still be cool to have a demo run or something, maybe just skate the last part of the course just to show we're out there rippin too. There are still 2 more races in BC this summer, The Sullivan Challenge(Shnitzles race) in Kimberley BC, and a week later is Mischos race, Vernon DH in Vernon BC
I'd love to see more females at these events, and not just standing on the sidelines! We may not always go as fast as these guys but it doesn't mean we love it any less!

Hey, I'm in NC but unfortunately about 6 hours from Asheville! =-( You ever skate the Food Lion park? There might be some females hitting that place up from time to time, check as often as possible. There's nothing much to skate in my area, but I will be moving to Greensboro in August and Asheville isn't so far from there.

Hey Lynn: Claude will likely attend the Colorado Cup - we have an event here at our sk8park June 11 so I'll stay here and run the show. I've been skating a bit to get ready for our Canada Day (July 1) slalom event. We may go to Hood River if Claude doesn't go to Stockholm.
Hopefully we'll both be racing at Breck & Morro Bay

The skate moms/aunties are planning a summer road trip from San Diego to Seattle. Dates not confirmed yet, but likely to be the last two weeks of July. Any and all women are welcome to caravan with us or just rendezvous for the day (you don't have to be a mom to roll with the moms!) and guys who support women skaters are also welcome. Also, anybody who can go to the Hood race should go. It's not too hard to get there from the airport (someone will give you a ride to town if you can't afford to rent a car). The Tight slalom hill had a good runout, and the downtown crowd is really interested. We need more women at the races. For anybody who is not sure of their ability, you won't know how good you are until you go race other women who may not be sure of their ability. Turns out, the women's division have some really good, close races. Like the top men's divisions, these races are separated by a cone!
Racing also improves your ability, just by showing up. Laura Henn and Sarah Byrd are perfect examples. From the first day in Mississippi to the Last day of Athens, both of these racers improved their skills just by watching, listening, and practicing. Way to go! Full respect for any woman to bomb Trade Street.
Bottom line is, the more people who are willing to show up, the more fun it is for everyone there.
We'll miss you Woodcamps! Take over the UK!

Hey Beth, It sounds like you're set up pretty good for skatin' the rough spots. I'm pretty spoiled here with all the new concrete parks, so I often see familiar faces when I go out. Have you checked on concretedisciples.com for other parks? It might be worth a schlep if there's an old school bowl or snake run type park in the general area. That's where I have found the cool older skaters, all guys, but at least we're all nursing the same crabby knees/ankles/hips etc. :) Good luck girl!

Very good suggestions you made there, I'm taking a broom w/ me next time. Got some Grind Kings rims for the wheels and that should help with the sand. Using 87a wheels now, might get some really soft Kryptonics though.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone else in this area who's closer to my age (36) and skates. Been by the skatepark in the next town a couple of times and it's all kickflippy teens riding street. So I just ride alone for now...meh.

Hey Beith, that sux about the lack of good skate spots! Not sure if this would work, but I always have a broom in the car for the sand, and wherever I go, I scope for small banks, sloped parking lots etc. You may also want to get some soft wheels, I use ABEC 11 no skoolz in 88 hardness, but they come in 78 also. Seattle has mostly really chunky rough sidewalks and streets, but I have found the suburbs to have nice smooth roads. If you're gonna fork over the dough to get a concrete pad, you might want to look into building your own quarter or half pipe. The awesome Dan at www.northwestkater.com is a great resource for building stuff, plus being the raddest skater I've seen in these parts.
For finding pals, have you tried posting on the pools/parks or banks/ditches boards? Those have alot more traffic on 'em and I am always amazed at all the soul skaters in the tiny places, like Biloxi Mississipi, etc, very NOT Dogtown kinds of places. You might find a skatepal. :) Good luck!

I'm still at it, sorta. Getting off to a very slow start however, since there's just no good places to skate around here, even to work on basics. Nearest skatepark is 25 mins away (and that's at highway speeds) and it's pretty crappy. And I found out that the streets around here have a lot of sand on them (because our soil is sandy and erodes onto the pavement) that gets all in your wheels. I have a set of Grind Kings Rims on the way that should help protect the bearings. In the meantime I'm really stuck on where to go...if you saw this area you'd understand! *sad laugh* Seriously thinking about looking into prices to have a patch of concrete put in just for kickturns and simple freestyle practice to help me learn balance and board control. And of course it would also be great to have someone, anyone to skate with. I learn by direct example, so reading something online and trying it later is just not the same.
Well enough whining from me. Hope you all are getting plenty of chances to skate hard! Keep the stories coming y'all!

Oh yeah some women did the skating this weekend! I just want to say this: Lynn Kramer- you are awesome! I love your attitude, and thanks for the pointers. I'll definately be practicing up before I race you at Athens!
Keli Benko- she is one bad girl to be watching out for! Winner of the C Class and beating out 15 guys or so, her style on that slalom course was beautiful! Poetry in motion. And let's not forget Mom Benko- who ripped! These women are sick and it's an HONOR to skate with such dedicated, stoked ladies!
Meg and Sarah were super impressive as well- Sarah's style is coming along and she's starting to look like her brother- got the arms pumping and doing great! I love all you ladies and can't WAIT to race with you all again!

Yeah! a girl who skates OB! I live like 3 miles from there. Just got back from there. I'm kinda cocky, yes. It's part of the skater package. But I'm really a nice person. Really. Ask anyone.
Anyway, I'll probably skate there one day next week, like Monday or Tuesday, so you should show up or email me to meet there. Maybe you could teach me a trick or two.
