i just got an full face HCI helmet for downhill. for just regular skateboarding i wear a triple 8, but i really like the classic protecs the best. the only place i know of to get a classic protec is www.stokedskateboards.com. they have really nice liners in them and are really comfortable.

The Doh-Doh's i cracked was a yellow one. I use the yellow one as a bottom bushing and bones as a top bushing. And it wasnt to tight because i was able to do a U-turn on my street standing up.
JimZ bushings seem like good bushing to me.. Im looking into buying them. they are a little on the expensive side but i want to nowif they are worth buying.

Wow, you split Doh-doh's?! What hardness? Were they 'cranked' way down? Also, were they the 'top' conical shaped ones? I've used the lower Doh-dohs for years without issues at all, but the conical tops are worthless to me on most trucks (however, they're great as cushions for the bottom of toilet seats, just the right height). With my 'bombing' trucks, I rarely use a conical bushing, I prefer to have a Fat Barrel bushing on both sides of the hanger. Keep that in mind, even if getting Khiro or Bitch bushings (though their 'taller' conicals fit well, and give some resistance to the Wobs).
Jim-Z's I don't own, yet, as I've got a decent number of Stimulators still (been using them since they came out in the mid-80's). However, I've been on a few boards with the Jim-Z's, and they feel great. I can't recall which ones (black, off-white) are the softer or harder, sorry. Something you'd want to ask Landyatchz, Kebbek, or Mile-High skates about. I can say this though; Jim actually went about making these to fill the niche that Stims left open, and did so with Downhilling in mind. Good bushings, no doubt. Radikals still are worth noting, but I find that to fit trucks other than Radikals (and sometimes to fit Rads better..) I have to trim them using a drill press and file. Stims or Jim-Z's should just fit as-is as a lower bushing on most trucks. Top bushings, Jim-Z's are the only FAT-but-not-too-tall bushing out there. If you're running into issues with using taller bushings, maybe look into kingpins that're another 1/8" or 1/4" longer? Also pay attention to your washers, and replace thick ones with Stainless-Steel 3/8" Flat-washers (10mm Metrics, I think?), which are strong despite being thinner.

Christian, run tighter at first. Why? Two good reasons.. One is Wobbles, which you don't want. And the other is stability in footbraking. Once you're good and comfy at 40-ish, then back off the bushing tension a half turn, run it again, repeat... Settle in where you can still steer, footbrake, and run fast with only a hint of wob. That's your 'race' mode, unless you're something either too boring or burly. When that happens, change the trucks as little as possible, but work instead on the wheels (bigger/faster for boring hills, smaller/stickier for the burly ones) to get the 'flow' of optimum coasting speed and best cornering blended right for the run.
Also, pay close attention to your bushing choices. Those little inexpensive bits of plastic are far more important than any one thing to your ability to handle speed.

look at photos, videos, the earlier stuff on the going downhill with david rogers Q&A as well as the Chris Chaput on speed forums. good photo sources would be kkphoto.net and galleries.psychos.org for videos youtube pretty much is the mecca you should take a pilgrimage to.
right now I'm studying Roli Hafner and trying to figure out how he does hairpins in a standing position (without a hand down), I just find him such an interesting rider because he can hop into a tuck with such ease after coming out of one such turn- he also has a sick amount of understanding when it comes to knowing how your wheels interpret and act with the road while their under great amounts of sideways force.
you also may want to learn to brake with both feet (interchangeably of course!) not just to save money on shoes but also just to have it as a trick up your sleeve as it might confuse your opponents to see you suddenly change your methods during a race. and in a perfect world I would assume it beneficial to learn to ride regular and goofy footing stance.
skate without ceasing!

Hey bros, I'm pretty new to the sport (since the past few months, about) and I have a crew of about four or five and we ride out in Orinda/Lafayette/Moraga, but we've never rode with anyone who actually competes or knows real technique we're just kinda figurin it out on our own. I was wonderin if there was an east bay team we could come watch/possibly join so we can get some tips on technique and all that good stuff

Hey Nic, you're going to have to practice this time ... 4 weeks to the race. You're gonna need to get ready because I'm definitely being cautious with the kids at this place. Get your full pads & etc. + parental sig. (and presence). Seriously.

as far as Boards go... you can't really say anything at all if you don't know what its being used for. -for downhill- Kebbek Flush Cut or Bassi Haller Smoothcut. rogers brother downhill, why because it turns into anything... accept a laundry machine. landyachtz Evo
-for carving- Sector 9 pintail or goddess of speed, any of the cosmic series would also do fine.
All of these with some Swiss Reds would be pretty sick.

Nic, 'PSR' is someone else's abbreviation for my old-schoolin' online moniker, "Pre-School Rider". This came about after my hangin' out with a Stratton local nick-named 'Old-School Dan', and my realizing I pre-dated his snowboarding and skateboarding by a few years. I've been skating (with serious intent) since '72, and snowboarding since '78 (was 13 then). I've Instructed/Coached snowboarding since 1988, and was helping skaters out with ramps, training, and banzia runs back in the early 80's (when skating 'died', the 2nd time). Somehow, I stayed good/lucky/fast enough to actually nab a 2nd place in Super-G at the Worlds in Morro Bay a few years back. The next year, Schwippert took the overall Junior's title with my coacing him in Slalom Racing. I used to also coach him for Snowboard Racing, but he's with Stratton Mt. School now. Spiro was one of the first of my riders to get some notice, the Teter boys (Hanna's brothers) also. Nowadays, I coach very little, have 5 month old Twins to care for, and work as a machinist making Plasma Cutter parts. The moral here, I guess, is that Skating can keep you young, even if you're an old fart like me. ;-)

wow! thanks that really made me think. no joke, it did! that bonus point thing might work. i just had another math test on wensday 3-28-07 and if i had failed that one i would have been grounded all spring break (BUMMER) but i got the result today and it was a c.a low c but im not telling the parents that part. so im free all spring break (NICE!). so im gonna skate it up from sun up to sun down, skating the local hills and school yard banks. cant wait to rip it up with the homies!!!!
thanks just curious whats PSR

Nic, as a coach who has inspired a few reasonably good skaters/snowboarders over the years, I'd advise this; Reset your Prorities... The math test thing sucks, and sounds a bit harsh (I always hated being grounded), But, IF you knew it was coming, you ought to have focused on that Math... Losing a good, sunny, bright weekend to just slackin', well, that hurts. :-( Consequences in Life don't get any Nicer, sorry to say. Gotta pay up If ya owe. Meanwhile, though, consider brokering a deal with the 'Rents for "time trading", where you set higher priorities on the stuff that crucial to you, and earn 'bonus points' towards being able to show up at those events as long as you tow the line on an average. It's just a thought. It may not fly with your folks. But, If it helps, this Idea came from a kid named Ian Spiro (he's now a 'former pro for Burton' and continues to earn his keep as a snowboard Mountain Guide), and I used it briefly with a lass who recently earned a Silver Medal in the Olympics. It gave both of these riders the chance to set goals that kept their grades on track, plus gave them the ability to trade off time for going to premier events they wanted to compete in, or time just hangin' with the local Posse without their having to bust down the barricade[s] to go roaming after being a bit behind in the parential agenda. Yeah, it's a trade-off, and it takes clear talk and Work, but maybe it'll get you out there when the moment is Right?

GSI has a new race up in vermont, I think the date it's based on is june 7th or 8th this year. How intense would that be!?! missing school for a race let alone finals!
silverfish doesn't suck. Alot of really good racers use it and like it just fine. It just hasn't evolved to the higher level of skate forum. So comparing it to this would be like comparing a Weedle to a Blastoise; the Blastoise would take the cake as would NCDSA.
Oh, "Hillz" is spelt "hills."
Oh, as far as good setups go Rogers Bros Downhill Board takes the top in my book. (with Randal DHs and Gummies)
