i could not make the Boneli downhill event, sadly, VERY sadly, due to problems with my teenaged son, Russell.
no worries though, being a mom is first, skater is further down the importance line, even when i WANT IT BAD!
PEACE and i'll get there soon enough

1st off, huge props to rogers and kludy for puttin those in liners in line! :) but i have 2 questions: one, what happened with isabelle's no show? and two, it seems like the rogers bros draft off each other a lot... you know in olympic stuff like speed skating it's illegal for a country to purposefully draft off their teammates because it's supposed to be an individual sport... believe me the question is totally innocent and i have no doubt that the rogers are some of the top in the world; but i've noticed a lot of pics with them right by each other...

OldStoke -

Senior PGA Golf, Surfing Championships,
and even Karate Tournaments have the
50 and Over Division - for their Masters Div.

The way the human condition is BETTER today,
-people living longer....looking younger.....
...there's a ton of 45 yr. old skaters out there,
that are still REAL PEPPY !
[-Oh man, did I just use that term ?]

I would like to thank Lynn Kramer & Tiger for having
a 50+ div. this year @ the 2006 La Costa Open !

That is so cool - I can't even believe it !

Keep training, OldStoke - and I'll see you at the Slalom Races !

How many over 50?
On 3/25/2006 was OldStoke, might need a new name wrote in from United States  (12.75.nnn.nnn)

I will turn 53 in a few months, and I just discovered this group today.
From reading the old posts, it seems as if there are a handful of early to mid fifties skaters, and one early sixties guy.
At the Skimboard contests I've been to in addition to Masters they have Grand Masters as well as Senior Grand Masters.
No one has ever been entered in the Senior Grand Masters at any of the events I've been at.
Does 45 seem to be about the maximum age to have a division for skateboarders?
How many different types of events do masters compete in?
In distance/endurance contests, who does better, born-again skaters or runners/cyclists that have added skateboarding to their routine?

State Games of Oregon: Master's Group
On 3/23/2006 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

I just got word from the State Games of Oregon that they have accepted my proposal to run skateboard racing as an event for the 1st time ever.

This event is for Amateur racers only (no Pro's allowed) and is modelled after the olympics (GOLD SILVER BRONZE medals, torches, podium, etc). Skateboarding will be included along with fencing, track-and-field, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc.

The age groups are still in flux, but there WILL BE a master's group 45+

Events are:

Sat Morning: GS/Longboard single lane.
Sat PM: Straight, Tight single-lane slalom
Sunday: Dual Hybrid slalom (head-to-head ladder bracket)

Participants do not need to be from Oregon. You may compete if:
a) You are an amateur
b) Live in Oregon or an adjacent state (CA, WA, NV, ID) AND your state games do not have skateboard racing (no other state does yet).

More detailed info will be on the contest calendar soon.

I've been skateboarding since '69 and in the past 8 months been getting back serious with it. I've put together 19 boards and bought 4 completes. I mainly like long boards and need to learn geometry secrets to go fast, eather tow or down hill. Don't want to spend alot of time at trial and error. Any suggestons?

Chriss,

I live in Houston about 200 miles from SA, but if you are going to be giving classes my son and I would make arrangements to be there. His balance is returning to him, he was ran over be a drunk driver and it crushed his femur so now he has a steel rod in his right leg, this makes bailing out on just about any trick painful so I have been guideing him more towards longboarding. I just got a Landy evo, I'm putting Randals DH on it for my bombing on weekends, would this be a good set-up for skogging? (since it has a dropped deck)
Anyway shout out when you plan on comming down and we'll make arrangements.
John

Senior Citizen Skateboarders Unite!!!
On 2/21/2006 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (68.224.nnn.nnn)

The current skateboard industry craze for the young has its place. It cannot ever dictate to us older guys forking out money for their kids who take place in that world. And thus, recreational skateboarding, non-competitive, non-hyped and no additives can best describe what floats the golden age skater. Yes, there are exceptions over 50 still getting massive air and layback grinding 4ft of vert, but for the rest of us noble skaters who are content with what could be considered "boring", we can do what most skaters take for granted and mix up "less impact" movements that require a new kind of skill. And I tell you, my personal experience with skogging borderlines meditation and yoga mixed with aerobics.

I've found riding Original trucks very loose on a 38" cambered/concave deck similar to a tight rope ride on wheels that gives me the feeling of popping down an extreme mogul field on cement.

If you have backproblems, I think skogging might help in the sense of making your spine stand erect while properly executing my skogging techniqe to the letter :D

I still skate transition(www.powayskate.com a site I donated to the kids and frequent taking pics to promote the local kids that would never make it to the major publications) and I love downhill.

All in all, staying fit is great and with todays boring aerobics, 24 hour fitness places etc, I can get a thorough body exercise FROM MY SKATEBOARD. Low impact as long as you dont fall :P

Anyways, I'm nearing retirment from daily IT stuff and will be concentrating on skogging and web development.

My sis lives in San Antonio and perhaps I could visit and perform my skogging class. You far from there?

Let me know bro!

cYa

Chris,

I Have taken up the invitation,
"for you old farts looking for another way to work on all parts of your body using the "roll your own exercise" method.. skogging, check it out. skumping, skogging cruising sidewalk surfing y0"
I am 52 and just getting back into skating. I've been building my own longboards and riding some others also. I have tried skogging and I like it. I still have to work on balance and cross stances but it's still fun. I can't do the parks or banks due to alot of back problems (reptured discs )but I do enjoy carving hills and parking garages. We have alot of bike trails here in Houston and when I ride them (as long as no one is looking) I try to skog. I enjoy seeing other "Gray Backs" still performing like they were still 18, riding bowls, ditches and pipes and anything else that presents a challange. Keep it up Ya'll

Z-boys & old school riding.
On 1/30/2006 Freak-A-Zoid wrote in from United States  (208.187.nnn.nnn)

Hi,

I've stopped skateboarding since about mid 80's but I've recently just watched both Z-boys movies and feel like I'm 14 again. I'm only 36 but I've always skated with the big boys since '78 back in Brazil. I loved all the surf skating style of the 70's doing berts, bank riding and downhill and stuff. I never really got into ollies and the way kids ride today. It's been about 20 years since I've been on a board but I'd like to change that. I'm getting one of those 70's re-issue decks and would like to know where's the old school scene is happening in Utah. I just moved here but I've heard Park City's got new big park that looks awsome from pictures. Any bank riders in Salt Lake City area?
