Yeah they were every Sunday. The cast that used to show regularly was incredible and then the folks that would drop in from up North made it different every weekend. La Costa was the place to be no doubt about it.
I will always remember Di Dootson sitting on the curb with her clipboard recording times and keeping us in line. She was La Costa!!!!!

Hi Rene! I'm going to print out those trading card photos you posted and show them to Mike and Judi Oyama. They'll love 'em, and Judi is quite the archivist of old skate memorabilia... she has tons of stuff squirrelled away.
I've been out free-carving a bit, and really digging my big-hill 23.5"wb ICK Retro-Flattie. High speed thrills... found a new spot with Goldman that is quiet, and probably a 6 out of 10 surface, on a fairly fast grade, so we're going to try some slalom there. Time to set some courses for the summer and keep the turns in shape!
All the best, Miko... 52 and ready to charge. (hey... the number 52 was my verification number for this post!?)

Still Riding...

Hi Rene! The short answer is, Yes, I'm still riding... but finances are very, very low, so I haven't really been able to go to races. In '04 I went to the big 3... La Costa, Breck, and Worlds, and did very well. In '05 I only went to Maryhill. *That* race was so sick, that I found it hard to get very excited about slalom in general, and decided to hang with my son and ride mountain bikes.
I'm still stoked to run cones and downhill, but have to say, Santa Cruz has been a tough place to keep regular sessions going. Most of the activity takes place over in San Jose on a great hill... Ravitch, Steven King, Mark Johnson and crew have sessions nearly every week, and I hit it when I can... Gas prices are really a pain right now!
My 11 year old son jumps bmx and mountain bikes, and Santa Cruz has a heavy mtb scene, especially the dirt jump crowd. There are several great spots, and top pros sessioning them regularly, so I guess I've sorta defected.
I dirt jump 2-3 times weekly, and in the last year of riding, I've left the beginner ranks, and am now jumping well enough to session the bigger spots. Jackson and I have a fairly large crew we ride with and the we get calls to ride all the time, so socially, it's just no contest... mtb in S.C. rules. The mindset is just like hardcore skating, and everyone watches out for each other, and mentors each other through the progression from beginner to pro.
I live right around the corner from Mike Goldman, and we have been hitting parks and downhilling a bit lately... and the stoke is building. If Mike goes to a race, I may have to go too! Mike's son Jamie Goldman, is a TOP mtb jumper, riding pro for Santa Cruz Bikes and travelling the world as a salaried rider. The pros have taken Jackson and I under their wings, so we've gotten some unreal tutoring and encouragement.
I still believe I could be a contender in any class with some focused practice, and haven't thrown in the towell yet! (I COULD use some wheels though... no $$$ for those!) I have a sick new deck from Rick Ick so I might show up somewhere later this year. We'll see!
Thanks for the thoughts Rene!

There is one guy in this sport that has done more to grow slalom racing in America than any other, and that guy is Jack Smith. He took the kernal of slalom activity at WLAC and brought it to a new level, throwing the first big World Championships in Decades in 2000, and then every year since then. And he keeps doing it. He's put on more races than any of us, and he's sunk a lot of his time and money into this game that we all have benefit from.
So I think it's time for us to do something for the old man. Let's send Jack to France! I learned last night that Jack has never been to Europe, let alone never raced there. I think this would be a cool thing if we could collect enough donero to buy this guy a ticket to race in the PSWC with his Euro brethren.
So here's the deal. Donate whatever sum you can. $5, $10,..$100. I'm thinking about that random phone call I got from Jack 6 years ago when he told me Slalom was back, and how he was going to throw the world championships that year. I've been "giddy as a schoolgirl" ever since, raced in 3 countries (counting Mississippi) and made lots of new friends because of that phone call. So SplitFire Trucks is going to throw down the first $100. Like I said, even $5 will help, so do what you can. We need $804 to get his tired ass from California to CDG. Jack's got a place to stay once he gets there.
Use the Donation button below to throw some coin in the pot. I'll collect it at asphaltplayground.com and when we have enough duckets I'll post it here. thanks!

Happy Birthday Martin!
You may be 45 but you don't show it. Keep on ripping and riding!
I just got off the phone with a reporter from a paper in Salt Lake City. She is writing an article on Slideing in the Salt Lake area. I think a clinic/festival this year in Utah would be great. If you would like to help organize one, contact me via my e-mail at: "sk8fast@gmail.com".
Talk to you later champ, Cliff Coleman

Hi!
My name is Emilio Fonfria, and my nickname is goofy-foot.
I have been skateboarding since the early 70´s. My first board was a makaha or mustang with red clay wheels, then I had a fiberglass board with california trucks and cadillac wheels, then an aluminum Banzai with Bennet and Rolls Royce wheels, then a Fibreflex with ACS and red kryptonics, and so on (more fibreflex, kryptonics, trackers, Oj´s, sims, gyro, Indy´s etc.) on to my mid 20´s when I stopped skating.
I am on my 40´s now and I have started to skate again. I bought myself a longboard and started practicing again. I have been part of the NCDSA and SilverfishLongboarding forums for two years with great joy and no problems so far.
Then yesterday I was horrified: There where FIVE SPAM postings in one of my usual forums (South America, I live in Venezuela right now), from posting # 234831 to 235244 (there are now six!).
Man I was in rage, I did not think, I inmediately posted a comment and rated them abuse and flagged the moderators (thinking it was the right thing to do...).
To my surprise, later at night I check the forums as usual, and my post was erased, the spammers where still there, and worst, I think I was banned from posting!
I don´t get it!
I think the NCDSA page is one of the best sites (if not the best!) for true skateboarders to hang. I will continue visiting it, I only hope you can put a halt to spammers, because that can do a lot of harm to the forums!
Sorry for my long rant, but I had to let it go...
Best Regards,
Emilio Fonfria

In general longboarding on that other site there is a new age poll.(as opposed to a New Age poll). There are only 2 or 3 people over 46 on it. Is that the reality of boarding in the Masters?

Happy Birthday Chris! I got you some new wheels, bushings and trucks. Go look in your warehouse and you'll find them!:) My birthday was last week, what did you get me?
And if you get on a super speed jet like the concord and fly west at top speed not only will you stop the aging process but you'll get younger.
Got to go. I have a plane to catch.
