I remember that skateboard ad. The father of a friend of ours had an MG and after seeing the ad he convinced him to park it out on the street once. My brother and I managed to clear it board-to-board over the hood, but we never made it in true high jump form. Then there was the time we rode across the trunk of a big ol' Lincoln Continental trying to drop to the street....

There will be a high jump event at the WC in brazil in October.
2004 Mens World Champion, Jose Morales of Los Angeles cleared 53" at the WC (Casper Classic 2 ) last year, a jump that stands as the highest recorded jump of the year.
Nikki Sharidan of Culver City California is the womens world record holder and first Womens World Champion with a jump of 36" at the Action Girl Skate Contest in August of 2004.
Go girls! We hope to see a few more in the high jump event in Brazil this October...
plenty of time to practice!

I remember that ad of that jump over of the MG by Beardsley over the MG in SkateBoarder. It inspired my skating bud and I try to jump over a bunch of stuff (nothing that big though). Our thing was jumping over each other as we rode toward each other. One guy doing a hand stand variation of some sort (V Sit, Beard Sweeper, Elbow Stand, etc). Here are some pics of me circa 1978-1980 (when I had hair!) jumping over Bobby Frye, my best friend back in the day and the best upside down rider I ever saw or skated with. These pics were taken at Myers Park in Concord, NC in the roller skating area that the local skate crew took over every Sunday afternoon and flatland freestyled, high jumped, slalomed, and just skated our butts off. We would pull up the van, unload all the boards, break out the speakers, crank up the tunes and skate to what was usually a "crowd" of 20 to 30 people who happened to be enjoying the parks other features (playground, picnic shelters, tennis courts, ball fields, walking paths, etc.)
I thought you guys would get a kick out of this stuff from way back when. By the way, the jumping board of choice for me was a 36" solid oak Sims with ACS 750's and Road Rider 6's.

The car jump was Brian Beardsleys signature move. He was on the California free former team with Ty Page ,Mark Boden and Kurt Lingren. That shot even made the cover of NEW WEST magazine. Ernie Martin did his 5' 3" record at the Long Beach World Pro contest (USSA-WSA).

Hey does anybody remember seeing an add in the skateboarder mag of this guy jumping over a red MG, then landing back on his board. The picture is locked in my mind from the late 70's. Does anyone remember who was doing this feat.

I wasn't only the local slalom-freak back in the late 70s, I was also the HJ-freak, with a personal best of 4'7" (best competitve jump, 4'4").
To my knowledge, the World Record is probably held by Ludek Vasa (the eastern European name Dan couldn't remember). I'm not able to find the particular back issue of TransWorld, but I know that Ludek jumped at the World's Fair event that took place in Canada during the mid-80s. That'd be the same event where there was an NSA Vert competition and where Claude Regnier had his long storied run-in with the slalom timers and Henry Hester.
If I recall correctly, Ludek jumped well over 5' at the Canadian event. My memory wants to suggest that it was 5'9", but reasonable thought tells me that's absurd. I think 5'5" is probably about right.
To this day, I continue to tell the story of a guy who I only ever knew of as "Grasshopper". Geezer X might remember. It was probably 1977 and there was a skateboard contest in Bowie, MD. (Where Geezer X debuted the Mt. Borgo Special/downhill fairing/weathervane) The event was a freestyle, slalom, downhill event, but just as we were winding up for the day, this guy shows up and the announcer starts talking about "Grasshopper". Well this guy busts out his own HJ gear (mic stands for standards, I was impressed) and immediately sets the bar to something like 5'2". This is all going on while there is a crowd milling about, not paying attention any to the HJ guy, and I'm laughing like it's a joke that he's gonna set his bar at 5'2" and then not be able to clear the crowd to "attempt" it.
Boy was I wrong. With help from the PA announcer, the crowd eventually cleared, and "Grasshopper" cleared 5'2", cold. No warm up. No build up. I think that's all he did. One jump, easily clearing a significantly World Record beating height (at the time the record was something like 4'9"), packed up his stuff and left. That's how I remember it, but it's also possible that my mind ceased normal function at the moment I watched this guy sail over 5'.
At this point in my life, 42 y.o., nothing reminds me more of how overweight and desperately out of shape I am than comparing the heights I could once jump with the fact that I'd be very lucky to land a 2.5 footer now.

Most successful jumpers use an off the shelf longboard with a standard wheel and truck set up. Some jumpers use a regular street board, but not many.

To get the maximum clearence over a high jump bar your feet and legs MUST be higher than your butt. Your butt is the bottom line for what heighth your body mass can achieve. Cross legs or legs to the side works best. I can email you a jpeg of Jose Morales and his winning legs to the side technique. Also it is possible to "suck up" your body slightly, this compression can give the jumper another inch or two.
The first step in learning to high jump is getting the take off and landing timing down. Practice just rolling and jumping a few inches ( no cross bar )to get a feel for your comfort level with increased speed.
Then start jumping a bar that is no more than 12 inches high, remember you are working on timing and speed and landing right now, heighth will come later.
The faster you can approach the bar the greater the hang time and the flatter the arc, this is important to allow body compression time for the slight advantage it offers, and gerater in-front-of and past the bar clearence.
Compress on the take off and compress on the landing for best results.
The first ISHJA California State High Jump Championship will be held in Santa Barbara California on December 4th at Ledbetter Beach. More details later.

Hello fellow skate buddies.
This is my first post outside the UK, though
I check out the other sections often. This new
section got me hot to trot, so I'm out in garage
makin up all the nessasary hardware to get re-started
in a discipline of skateboarding I used to love, HIGH JUMP!
Hoping to get my fellow slalom friends here in the UK interested.
We could easy do it as a add on at our slalom races.
BARREL JUMP anyone ?

Jumping over your own height is quite a feat because I hear it is hard to clear something that is over eye level. I have a few friends that high jump for track and field and one of them can jump 6' and he is only a Freshman.
Anyway, I would just like to know how to start the jump. Whenever I try, my board just stops and I look like an idiot...

Jack,
Jumping over your own height is like bench pressing more than your own body weight. Not many can make the claim. Next time we talk, we need to talk about Track and Field.
Whether a person is jumping from a board or the ground, you need to have "hops", to get up in the air. Same with Ollies etc.
I like many different sports and find that usually. if your good at one, then you are pretty good at others.

When I was a senior in high shcool I high jumped 6'1", which was 6" over my head at the time. Some white guys can jump...LOL
I can still grab the rim on a regulation basketball rim.

You don't really need seperate divisions. You could have awards for the greatest leap over the rider's own head/height. Franklyn Jacobs has this very record for the High Jump. He has jumped 23 and 1/4 inches over his own height. At 5'7" he once held the World High Jump record!

As many of you are aware, high jump has regained popularity in the last several years. A few of us who have been active in the revival are interested in creating a board of directors for an International Skateboard High Jump Association, a non-profit org. and a web site. The basic objective is to have an organizartion that will keep track of records, establish a set of divisions based on the heighth of the jumper, and generally promote the activity of skateboard high jumping in a format that would be acceptable to the IOC.
Current board members include Heidi Lemmon (SPAUSA), Bobby "Casper" Boyden,
Ron Cook (Pure Guts), and myself(WFSA). Others are invited and eventually we will have an election and be offical.

Hey, this is cool!
I thought the world record was something like 5'5", set by some Eastern European dude with a long, multi-syllabic, very hard-to-spell name... But what do I know?
I do know that I could once jump 4'8", and I'm still proud of that. As a 5'10" guy with short legs, that was just about my physical limit!
Cliff, I bet you could once do better than that!
