Hey Cliff, over on the Thrasher website you can now download the Feb 1981 issue as a PDF. In it they have a story and photo of you sliding the Berkeley hills. I bet it's been a while since you've seen that issue!

Eddie
On 2/21/2006 Cliff Coleman wrote in from Brazil  (200.193.nnn.nnn)

Eddie,

Use trucks that you like and make sure that when they are mounted with wheels too, that the wheels line up with the outside rails of the deck. If the deck is wider than the trucks with wheels mounted, it will be too tippy. If the deck is not as wide as the trucks with the wheels mounted, then it will be harder to turn and you might step on a wheel and fall/crash.

I use independent trucks, 149 wide for a deck about 9" wide.

Hey Cliff,

Here's a moment from the 'hood for you. I'm riding up Channing above Telegraph this morning and I see this long boarder completely eat it.

He was moving at about running pace... tried to foot drag on wet pavement... got crossed up and tried to run it out... but his feet coudn't catch his body and he touched down on hands/shoulder/head.

He fell into the lane in front of a car that skidded to a stop. Classic.

***

I stopped and asked him if he knew about sliding.

"yeah, man"

I explained the benefits of crashing on slide gloves and offered to teach him for free... so that brutal gash in his hand "never happened again".

"Im late to class"

I gotta say he never made eye contact and seemed put off by the idea of a lesson.

***

maybe if the spirit of cooperation, instead of competition, pervaded the sport more folks would take a little coaching. I started skateboarding less than two years ago after a slide lesson from Cliff. Now I can safely negotiate my way down pretty much any slope with a ride-able surface.

Humble today/Play tomorrow

Yuppie and sliding
On 2/13/2006 Cliff Coleman wrote in from Brazil  (200.171.nnn.nnn)

Sliding is growind at incredible speed! Yuppie is the main reason at the moment for this. He is traveling around the World demonstrating what can be done on a skateboard flying doen a hill. He won the recent Slide Fest, He toured with Lush, Shiner and Faltown along with myself. //////////////everywher he foes he is the Michael Jordan of sliding! Everybody wants to slide like him be around him, he is a star.

This has only been the beginning though. Now he is in Skateboarder magazine, has an eight page spread in the current Tribo magazine here in Brazil and he will also be on the cover of the new CW.

Go Sergio!

Fabrice,

I'll be back in the Bay Area 2/23/06 You need to save a little time for me to show you the Berkeley area.

There is plenty of sun here. The weather in Rio is about 27 to 29C at night and about 32 in the day time. The surf was about 6 to 9' today. Mostly a shore break but consistent all day.

Talk to you later,
Cliff

CKnuck,

I'm in Brazil so I had to respond to multiple questions while I had a chance. Notice that I didn't post for a while because I couldn't get to a computer.

Regarding July, I might be in the UK. It is in the works, but we can probably work out your dates also.

Nice to hear from you,
Cliff
