History not Trivia
On 7/21/2006 Joe Lehm wrote in from United States  (65.19.nnn.nnn)

All Around Championships are important to the history of the Sandia event because no other event since then has challenged skaters to show their skills in such a wide variety of skating. Alva won in Long Beach in '77 doing Downhill, Slalom, Bowls, Freestyle and Barrel Jump, setting a world record. The '78 Championships dropped barrel jumping and added cross country. In Abq we call it Cross Town because it's 8.3 miles along a striped bike lane, but the obstacles are the kinds of traffic, bikers, cracks and manhole covers that you would encounter crossing any town on your skate.

The winner of the Sandia All Around Challenge will be crowned the best ALL AROUND skater in the world based on 9 events. If you disagree, then show up and show us up! Last years Sponsorship Lottery winner was Jason Mitchell, who did pretty well 3rd). Are you coming back for more Jason? O'Shei? Fadell? TA?

Lottery applications are now being accepted for Pro Skaters that want to take the Challenge. One skater will be awarded entry fee, lodging, and the use of an enormous quiver to undertake which ever terrain they are least prepared for.

I might have seen him

So, last night I decided to pop in Animal Chin. Well, I am kinda watching it with one eye while I am doing some other stuff and I see the bouncer outside the blue tile lounge sorta looks like that Skip dude from the Dogtown movie. While I am lookin' in the credits, I see that not only was it him, but Hackett and Olson are listed there too!

What did you guys do on that movie?

BLR website

Hackett, Olson or anyone from BLR:
Something's wrong with the website. The front page comes out ok, but nothing happens next, ie no access to other parts of the site. Please have it checked.
Hey guys, come down to Brazil some time. You'll find hills that range from Rain Forest narrow slopes to looong steep 50mph+, all this between Rio and São Paulo alone. If you guys ever bother going to the Southern Region, Teutonia is the s#@! - some guys speed up to 70mph! Oh, lest not forget about cement parks, beaches, girls, cheap beer...

CROSS COUNTRY IS...
On 7/14/2006 HACKMAN- THE GNAR! wrote in from United States  (68.66.nnn.nnn)

KINDA' LIKE OBSTICAL COURSE RACING OR PARK SLALOM- IN A WAY.

CROSS COUNTRY IS REALLY PUSHING AS FAST AS YOU CAN AROUND A SET COURSE FOR SPEED
AND BEST TIME.

PARK SLALOM DIFFERS IN THAT IN PARK SLALOM, THE RIDER SHOULD PUMP THE TRANSITION OF THE PARK FOR SPEED- NO PUSHIING AFTER THE TIMER STARTS.

SOMETIMES CROSS COUNTRY WAS DONE AS A RELAY WITH A BATON BEING PASSED BETWEEN THREE RIDERS/RACERS- I.E. DENNIS MARTINEZ, STEVE SHISHLER AND MYSELF WON THE CROSS COUNTRY AT THE FIRST OASIS CONTEST IN 78'.

Back when I was a kid in the 70's
On 7/14/2006 CM wrote in from United States  (64.128.nnn.nnn)

Here is the quote from a 1996 interview. The interview can be found at
http://www.angelfire.com/ca/alva2/1996.html

Tell me about the world championship.
It took place in Carlsbad, California in 1978. The sponsors were Hang Ten and some other big corporation like Pepsi or something. The competition was pretty well rounded as far as the skate scene went back then. Anyone who was anybody was invited to compete in all five events. They had bowl riding, which was relatively new, freestyle, slalom and cross-country. I tied for first in the bowl, which was a joke due to politics, third in freestyle, and second in slalom. This pretty much clinched my overall victory; all I had to do was place top five in downhill and cross-country, which I easily did. This made me the men's overall World Professional Skateboard Champion. A very great accomplishment to my self at the age of 19. Immediately succeeding this contest, I founded Alva Skates, with my first business partner, Peter Zehnder. The rest is history.

Wasn't it was Bowl riding, freestyle, slalom, downhill and high jump? Also it was 1977, not 1978. He also set a barrel jumping record in 1977. -Geo

Tony Alva's five
On 7/13/2006 Bud wrote in from United States  (68.57.nnn.nnn)

Steve O'Hara at Pioneer's Board shop in Hampton Beach, NH used to grill me with these sorts of trivia questions, and I loved it! I'll give it a whack, even though Gnar will probably be pissed as hell if I'm wrong:

I'm gonna guess some sort of bowl or pool riding, one. That's a given, I'd think. Probably slalom and freestyle, 'cuz that's what was at Del Mar, and those were pretty in vogue for the day- two and three. I'd guess some sort of downhill speedboarding setup (I remember those white leathers with the red arrow, there was a pic of him in Friedman's book doing some speed runs in it). And, Hack mentioned something in the Dogtown Movie about jumping barrels... or, maybe it was high-jumping? Jumping something, that'd be my #5. I'm goin' with barrels, just for s#@!s and giggles.

All Around It
On 7/12/2006 Joe Lehm wrote in from United States  (65.19.nnn.nnn)

Glad to see you and Palmer here, it's been a while. You can't have Will, but you CAN send O'Shei again, I think he's your best All Arounder, he did well last time. Fadell told me he'd like to try it, but that he needs to work on his speedboarding skills. Sandia is repaved, fast and furious, and we've expanded the event to 3 days to give all of the flatlanders more of a chance to catch their breath between the 9 events. Dave, I know you know the answer to this, but let's see who else does: in 1978 TA was crowned Worlds Best Skateboarder based on what 5 events?

Palmer, you probably don't still have that $1000 from winning the Bear, but I DO still have your Trophy Paws. I'll get then to you soon.

Miller Time
On 7/10/2006 LYnn wrote in from United States  (66.91.nnn.nnn)

Johnny Miller is the most BLR of all the BLR. He raced Hood on Sunday, qualified top of the B Class, then proceeded to puke twice between his semi-final runs, just before winning the B Class. Then, I quote (pretty closely) "I'm so tired, I want to just sleep. Are you going to the brewery? OK, I'm in."

Miller, YOU ROCK. CCMF!

Sign BLR up for Sandia
On 7/10/2006 Joe Lehm wrote in from United States  (65.19.nnn.nnn)

Will BLR be sending any one to compete for the Worlds Best All Around Skater?

The 6th Sandia All Around Challenge will be held September 22nd – 24th, 2006. This event was featured in a recent issue of Concrete Wave magazine and has the highest exposure of the TSR 2006 Series because it is possible for spectators to see all 9 of the events that competitors are earning points in. Add that to riding the endless ditches of Albuquerque and you have plenty of riders and rippers making the weekend trip to explore this legendary event.

This year is expected to be the biggest All Around yet with defending champions
Chris Chaput of ABEC 11, Will Brunson of TimeShip Racing and runners up Rob Palmer of Sector 9 and Ryan Ricker of TSR battling it out for the title of the Worlds' Best All Around Skateboarder. This requires competing in High Jump, Ollie High Jump, Longest Grind in the Combi Pool, 360's, Best Trick, Banked Slalom, 8.3 mile Cross Town Race, Downhill Race and a Slalom Race. 3 days, 9 events and a 3 board minimum, this is the All Around Challenge. In 1978 in Long Beach Ca, Tony Alva was crowned the World All Around Champion based on 5 events. In Albuquerque we have revived this tradition for the 6th consecutive year and we hope you will be able to come and represent. Sign up now on the contest calendar.
