I can't believe people still talk about a fictional film rendition of a semi-fictional legend. I like the question about the 1st black skater, that's a good one, Can I qualify for the 1st skater with strabismus of the eyes?, Dang, I thought I had that in the bag. Adios-Paul

The first black skaters? Are you kidding us with that question? How can anyone really know that?
In '72 I had a black friend who skated regularly who was not Marty. How many others were there like him? Many more no doubt and there's no way of knowing who they were. Maybe you mean: The first black skater put in a magazine?

Grimes would be pioneer regardless of race. Supposedly him and his brothers and friends used to skate outside the Santa Monica Civic after the surf movies, and they were the first black kid skaters Jay and the z-boys had ever met. Jay asked Marty to be on EZ which became z-flex.
Check out http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/dtown/grimes.html.
See the picture of Marty way up on the flat wall at Skatopia? That wall was not flush with the halfpipe and he used to make those! I was lucky enough to witness him in action at the second Old School Skate Jam and he still had the rubberman vert skills in evidence.

The Carrasco brothers have told me stories about that place. Apparently it was on the grounds of an old sanitarium for the mentally ill, hence the name. Huge wide pool with spit gutter coping, there are many great pictures of Jay Adams and TA up on a plywood extension set up in the spit gutter. Richy C tells how a young barefoot Steve Olson would be there begging to borrow a skate since he didn't have one. Lot of bicyclists rode the pool too, I think there is of footage of both skaters and bikes in Downhill Motion.

I keep hearing stories about the Fruit Bowl in OC in the 70s, and the Mid City OC counterpart to Dog Town, but there is so little information on it. Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm not saying he was the first, but the black kid in the movie was Marty Grimes,(played by Eric Tuma Brtitton) who still skates and still rips.

you can search ebay for fibreglass old 70's decks... or just get one of the new reissues that have come out that are wood... such as the Alva 1977 reissue, or the Z-flex woody's... or the new G&S Warptail reissue... and then set it up with some midtracks or indy 109s and some Abec 11 Bertz, Madrid Cadallac reissues, or 3dm "roadrider red" cambrias... or check out the new Retro Zigzags in 66mm 78a "red rider" thane...
that will give you the retro surfy ride you're lookin for

Skating Surfing and music and of course the girls. What a life it was. we use to skate with you guys back then. Theres only one dogtown as far as i'm concerned. jay adams, tony alba, jim muir,(looks like me, better thou) what ever happened to steve olson?? Those boys had the same life style we did, and it rocked. still in my heart allways will be. I took the same road jay did. 7 years in lock up. now not looking back, skys the limit. stay true to what we are. natures are home, and what we make of it. remember the fruit bowl(garden grove) no roof on that one. LOL Sending love to the Z-boys, and my first Zepther. it rocked. Later Danny
