And following on from Hog Hill, we have had a communication from one of it's designers regarding further possible sites for slalom skating including the Olympic Velopark and Gravesend:
(Gravesend) "is not very wide, but 4 miles long... Had the most recent meeting for that yesterday, and I’ve put skateboard slalom down as something the planners need to think about – get some consideration of your needs in from the start. So what I’m really asking is roughly what kind of things you guys need and want from a venue, and is there somebody or an organisation who can be put forward for both the Gravesend team and the Olympic bods to ‘consult’ with on the respective sites?
As I said, I’ve already mentioned slalom skateboarding yesterday at the first design meeting for Gravesend, and there was a positive reaction. At present, the designers have a big map with the boundaries of the site... and are talking very roughly in terms of where things will be placed overall (i.e. carpark, pavilion building, BMX track, skatepark, road circuit, dirt jumps, etc.) I am by no means an expert on road cycle racing, but their requirements seem fairly simple (bends, hills, nothing dangerous) so I can’t see any reason why the designers can’t ensure you get a slope or slopes within the circuit that are tailored to your needs. There’d also be considerations about fitting it into part of the circuit that can be segregated out (like the various road circuit loops that can be formed at Hog Hill) so there isn’t the expense of hiring the entire circuit), and finally, if it’d be of any use having lighting for evening events in the two-thirds of the year that are dark!
The Gravesend site is the old A2 (Watling Street roman road) route running between the A2260, past the A227 in the middle, and to the far side of Singlewell (the entire length of Gravesend – about four miles). See map: Click here for link. The satellite picture shows the route of the new A2 under construction. North-south wise the site includes the old A2 (motorway width – three lanes and a hard shoulder each side, plus verges and central reservation – pretty wide bit of land to start with!) plus the fields in between the old and new A2, and the small bit of Channel Tunnel Rail Link land south of the old A2. Best described as slightly rolling downland – not really hilly, but not really flat either. Terrain can be messed about a bit during construction if needed. Unlike Hog Hill, Gravesend is not a ‘cycling centre’, it’s a ‘multi sport activity centre’. Project manager is a chap called Dave Standon (dstanden@hotmail.co.uk), and the project is coordinated by Laurence Tricker (Laurence.Tricker@kent.gov.uk). Next user group meeting is 8th December over lunch."
This could be a huge boost to the development of the sport in the UK, so let's compose a sensible wish list of what one might prefer to see in a purpose built facility and put it forward in a prrofessional manner.

Following on from the BBC report that there would be a road training circuit around the proposed Lea Valley Velodrome:
The UKSSA has been sent a quick sketch from Tony Williams, one of the MTB circuit designers, as to how it should be laid out:
The Big Hill to Underpass section has the greatest slope, but has gentle curves so might be good for GS or Hybrid. The flat long straight section might be good for testing those World Records.

In an effort to keep travelling costs down AND get maximum people to get a shot at a record we look like we will be having two venues in the UK. We have a great talent pool of fast racers and record breakers or not, everyone is out to have a good time. Unfortunately due to our lack of a good 100 cone venue the attempts will be 25 and 50 cone only. There is a slim chance that a 100 cone attempt will take place at Finsbury Park, but we will keep you posted. So it will be:
SUNDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2008.
Hyde Park, London-25 and 50 cone record attempts.
Hove Lawns, Brighton-25 and 50 cone record attempts.

Hi Marty, Sam is the best informed so he could give you the best info but he is away at the European Champs in Amsterdam right now. As far as I know the attempt to get it in under the umbrella of another 'wheeled' sport, cycling failed. I think they were thinking of Half-pipe as an Exhibition event with it being staged in the centre oval...

I remember reading a bit ago about slalom being a demo sport at the London Olympics. Then my nephew heard someone discussing it at the US Nationals. Is that going to happen? 20, 40 60% chance or no way or?
Watching the Summer games made me curious.

Mmedo Report: What a fantastic day.
Thanks to Ian (and his lovely lady, who really did do more than she had bargained for) and Glenn - under MD's Supervision - for pulling such a coup!
The racers were up for it, the races were tight, everybody raced at least twice, and as ever some new-comers got the chance to show that if you're a skateboarder, slalom is no big deal. Curt, SteveS, PW, we missed you.
Despite our best efforts, London took the crown.
Congratulation Slippa, from what I've seen, it's not the only one you'll be wearing in the years to come. Under the caring tutelage of the serpentine regulars, you are fast becoming the best UK rider (sorry you old boys, but you'll agree, the time has come...).
A big cheers to all those who travelled down today. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Another big pat in the back to the locals (and adopted ones); we put on a good show, it will take some beating to find a better venue for flat tight slalom.
Martin, it was sad to see you leave right at the end; I hope we did you proud.

Is this a remote colony of Pig City?
Not as yet fully official, but here's a slalom race date for your diaries:
The Crackling contest registration
We have the track from 12:00 until 4:00pm on Sunday (including setup) with coffee, changing facilities and toilets available on site. Given the time available, the plan is to run a hybrid H2H, but this could change to double elimination if preferred, so that more racing is had by all.
Hog Hill Cycle track has been recently constructed in order to replace the Eastway Circuit (now an Olympic building site) and has super fresh tarmac. We will be the first official booking for the sports site, so will be used as a test bed for future events. The idea is that if we get in early with a good crowd then they will look favourably towards slalom skating for future events.
We will need to provide someone with Fist Aid skills, so if you are so trained then please mention it on the race sign up. It is pretty unlikely that your skills will be drawn upon. Car to casualty is the usual official route!
Ramps and timing will be kindly provided by Michael at Octane Sport; push starts can be used if preferred.
This is a new venue with lots of promise, so let's get crackling!

Don't forget to check this race out!
I guarantee there will be a new name at the top of the pile as this is an Amateur-only event, plus Sam and Mick are in Latvia. Will London experience take it with the likes of Ed and Rob? Will the local Pig City Crew dominate? Will East Pig City's finest prevail when he puts his camera down? Or is Slipa on a roll despite the hangover from his birthday the night before?
For those who don't know the event is part of one of the biggest Beach Festivals in the UK http://www.paddleroundthepier.com, so there is plenty to do and see. Fat Boy Slim is even giving a free concert.
Ian has secured a new spot on the Seafront much longer than our usual Hove lawn haunt, its near the "Meeting Place cafe", near the Peace Statue (how Brighton!) NO-ONE WILL HAVE RIDDEN THE COURSE BEFOREHAND-they will be set on the day by me, about 40 cones, offset and averaging around the 6ft mark. Format is: -Push start -Double Elimination bracket (you have to lose to 2 people to get eliminated)
Hope you can make it, sign up on the Contest calendar, See you there,
Martin

Evening All!
NASS 13-15 June 2008 - race site inspection
I drove down to the race site for NASS on Saturday to check the new section of Slalom racing road that was suggested at Thursdays meeting with the NASS crew.
The good news its a good section and is closer to the action. It will be fenced off and is away from the general camping area (the athletes camping area is just after the end of the slalom course).
In the photos the start line will be by the white van (just after the road). The black 350z is facing down the race slope 3/4 of the way thru the course.
There is room for about 40-50 cones tight (about a 12 second course) and 30 cones easy hybrid.
The slope is pretty easy, and will allow beginners to go at a reasonable speed. The middle section flattens, but then steepens again. I suggest leaving about 30 feet for foot braking. The finish line arch should be a quarter of the way past the oval which is along side.
There is room for dual racing, and maybe a fun single lane hybrid.
The surface is fine for 80 durometer wheels, and feels good underfoot. There will need to be sweeping as the loose stones along the edge can find their way on track.
This event s looking really good, even at short notice, and will really show a big audience of skaters and the media that slalom racing is hot action!
Thanks for everybody helping so far.
There is still lots to sort out so don't be shy in offering your talents!

NASS British Open Slalom Championships
This will take place as one of many events happening at this years NASS Festival at the Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. This year’s festival is under completely new management, Sports Vision, who are also responsible for The Rip Curl Board Masters Series. The main event-planning meeting was held yesterday at their offices in Hammersmith. Clingfilm, Louis and Nutsack, myself, and latterly Paul (who incidentally undertook the initial site visit) attended.
The event will feature vert and street skating, inline, BMX, FMX and a host of other attractions, rides, stalls and try-outs. There are also a host of music acts including Pendulum and The Subways performing on stage. We have been invited along to showcase slalom racing to the 10,000 strong capacity crowds.
The event runs from Friday 13 – Sunday 15 June.
The format for racing will be: Friday – Practice/Demo races
Saturday – Dual Special Slalom
Sunday – Dual Hybrid Slalom
(We will probably be able to cram in some additional races as well as we are not limited to a particular finish time on Saturday!)
Camping will be away from the main public campsite in the separate competitor area. Access will be limited to those wearing competitor wristbands (issued on signing into the showground) and will have 24-hour security.
Relentless, one of the main sponsors, will be providing an “Athletes Lounge” serving food, courtesy of “Nandos”, twice daily at 1pm and 3pm to ensure we all get a chance to eat. Again access to this area will be by wristband.
Due to the erection of crowd fencing vehicular access will be severely restricted after the event starts on Friday, we will however have use of the competitor car park.
There will also be medical teams on onsite with 24-hour cover.
What we ask from all of you is that you sign up as soon as possible and make your payment by PayPal, £25 for one day or £35 for the weekend (All proceeds go to UKSSA). We need to submit a list of all registered racers to the organisers at the beginning of June – if your name is not on the list you don’t get in! We know this is very short notice but urge you not to miss out on this event – this could be the start of something big! This will be a fun weekend and as such our racing will be more of an exhibition of slalom racing, people may ask you questions and we will also be allowing other skaters etc. to have a go. The Sports Vision guys have already thrown gauntlets down with each other! The main sponsors Vans and Relentless have donated some very large purses for the main arena events this year, who knows next year – Prime Status and muchos £? We need to put on a really good show here and are asking for everyone to pull together and support this event.
Important!
Thursday night we will have full vehicular access until 9am when the barriers arrive. Please note: Cars are not allowed onto the site after Friday morning. You will not be allowed to park next your tent.
On arrival go to the main entrance, your name will be on a list (but only if registered), then go to the event office, past the shopping village, to get your competitor wrist band.
You will need to carry your camping stuff to the athlete camping area, which will have security so should be safe and quieter.
More information to come as we get it.
More information on the NASS Festival and band line up can be found at www.nassfest.com
How can you help?
We may need help with ramp transportation on Thursday and setting them up on arrival.
Do you or do you know someone who has a PA system that we could use?
We also need coneheads for the races, (friends, family members?) and people to run the timer etc. These people will need to register with NCDSA so they have a ticket and can be issued a wristband
If you can help with any of the above contact Paul or myself.
Many thanks
