"Not Pauliwog" is probably correct due to the desire for "gnar" factor. Though I'll probably be boring and stick to the traditional slalom stuff. - P

Oh yeah, Thanks for the pictorial from last year's BBQ - P

Portland slalom - endangered species?
On 4/5/2008 not Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

5 skateparks, 15 more getting built, a couple of pools, TONS of great street skating, a skatepark in every suburb in every direction, and downhill like Mt.Tabor, ZooBomb, Rocky Butte, etc. It's going to take more than a parking lot to make slalom interesting for folks around here. The only way to draw more than 5 people is to make it dangerous and life-threatening. The Death Race is getting too easy - it's time to raise the bar!

Weekly slalom session in Beaverton
On 4/5/2008 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

I have a hill I use here. It can support about 5 or 6 people before we would start to draw too much attention.

Anyone in Portland who wants to set up a weekly session? (Thursdays after work seem to fit my schedule)

More Necrosis of Slalom in the Great Northwest
On 4/5/2008 Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

It's pretty much now official that due to a conflicting event, I won't be attending Hood River at all just so everyone knows for planning, course-setting, lugging stuff, etc.

It feels weird and not-good knowing Hood will be happening with everyone there and me not there, but I'm glad it will be happening outside of my involvement. Dang. Double Dang.

My observation from a distance: If the only races/events happening in Portland are "death races" at moderate to higher speeds with the cones way-far apart with some cones right on the edge of the pavement with pine-needles in the apex of the turn(with the intent of posing a hazard), that will definately NOT attract the average slalomer who is a smidge older and needs to be physically intact to perform his or her job to pay bills, rent, food, mortgages, etc, and wishes to keep skating for another 10 to 30 years and not stop short due to avoidable injuries. I'M NOT SAYING TO STOP THE "DEATH RACES"(and YES, a "THANKS" goes to Josh for putting on something), just so everyone is clear on that, but if noone is occassionally getting people together to just go have fun running cones in a parking lot or walkway somewhere with or without a timer, then yes, slalom will stop happening.

At the other end of the spectrum: I have pretty much stopped setting my old supertight, overly awkward techy courses at the Riverfront in Corvallis since noone else within 45 miles of me can even hope to make it through those courses plus it gives me a backache and I don't want to stop skating due to wearing-out my lumbar disks and nerve-roots on twitchy supertight courses. So, now that I'm setting more newbie-friendly courses at the riverfront, more "kids" are trying slaloming when I'm there. Gotta Go- P

Hey, All you Portlander slalomer's: If the wifey and I don't go backpacking next weekend, I might be into coming up there or you can come down here. Use shame as a tool against Anderson, Thor, and anybody else to leverage them back into it. Schlater - P

P.S. Monday may have good weather, anyone up for a Monday session?

More Slalom Death, sorta, well, not really, just maybe, um I don't know
On 4/4/2008 BBQ Supreme Secretariate Paulskiivoxg Zhowardstakovic wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hey Comrades, www.weather.gov (the National People's Weather Service) is calling for 70% chance of showers through Sunday April 6th PREceded by likely rain the night before and showers possible in the evening.

So, I am going to look up the weather tomorrow(Saterday) whilst at work and make a decision Saterday morning hopefully by 10:30 am. I'll post here and on the slalom forum.

IF the forcast still calls for 70% showers(or something like that), I will be postponing the race and rescheduling for Sunday April 20th. I think this is likely going to be the case at this point but lets salute our pictures of Marx and Trotsky and do our No-Rain Dances and keep our fingers crossed but please don't try to hold your breath that long, I don't want any of you turning purple and falling over. Long live the Revolution!

Slalom is DEAD in the NW
On 4/4/2008 a mourner wrote in from United States  (24.20.nnn.nnn)

With the exception of some hill outside Auburn, WA,

slalom is dead in the Pacific Northwest.

I can't even find ANYONE to come to visit this last bastion of stoke with me. I have 1 person to run cones with (sometimes) and I'm going crazy.

Here it is 2 days before our season opening event and this forum is a ghost town.

Congrats to Brad for a "Fine Print" being dedicated to him. Maybe if Brad moved to Rose City things would be awakened.

If you have something you want to drop in this forum link, send it to my email and I will loader up. I also have a web site hosting service where we could create a CSA site as well. Anyone good with webpages? I don't do HTML but I have all the supporting tools to get us rockin. Check out this link to our photo share or copy and paste it in your browser:

I will probably not being going to all of Hood River due to a bowmaking class I'll be teaching and if I'm lucky I'll race only on Saterday most likely. So, if I'm there I'll help out but won't be available for the whole thing, just in case anyone is assigning duties at this point. If anyone cares. That's about if for now I think. OK, so if I get anymore info, I'll post it here first. All of you will be the first to know, after me that is, since you know, basically I have to know something first before I am able to pass it on. That about wraps it up, for know I guess.

Ughh! Mother Nature is such a tease. First she says yes, then she says no. 2-3 inches of snow on the ground, more coming down and more in the forecast, whiteout conditions and school closures in the outlying areas, all this and I just want to go skate!! Why can't I be in N. Carolina watching the Cougs? Can't wait to go to Salem next week.

Forecast-Saturday is still looking quite nice with partly to perhaps even mostly sunny skies through most of the day, with highs into the low-mid 50s.

Lakeland 12 noon (though someone might be there at 11), Bring your cones, brooms, and loaner boards, might have some newbies show up
