thanks dave for the fun race.
on my first practice run i was skeptical that i could really push myself to go fast through the course but once i was fully padded and my board was set i went for it. i finally achieved my goal of beating jeff and now i have my sights set on stryker. hahaha
thanks skip for letting us crash at your place, and thanks to america in general for having an abundant supply of beer on every corner

STRIKE FORCE!!!
Thor-- Woodland sounds great, finally a good bowl in the area! All the more reason for a November slalom. And will drop a line just whenever I'm down visiting my broski.

I thought the race was this coming weekend. There is a new Dreamland bowl in Woodland WA that just opened last week. I skated it Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This bowl is located 2 exits north of the Ridgefield hill exit and 3 exits north of the WSU exit. Dave Anderson and I were talking Saturday about killing two birds with one stone and doing Woodland bowl riding sessions on Sunday mornings followed by late morning early afternoon slalom sessions at WSU. This bowl is tits!

The weather was perfect in Portland yesterday for the race. Thanks to everyone who showed up, manned the brooms, and helped break down. John Stryker was showing off his new found speed with style yet again, in fact his three times were faster than anyone and would have taken 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Josh and Brad and everyone else did great as usual. Jeff, Malcolm, Red Ted, Hayato (and I'm sure I've forgotten one or two of the Canadian contingent) made an excellent showing for their second CSA race and for some of them their first GS race.
Keep an eye on the weather for mid-November and a race at WSU.

Being cooped up with work and recouperation, I gotta do some vicarious keyboard racing here. You guys had killer weather all day, how did things go? Coned or unconed? Devious offsets from the Moy/Jackman duo??

My Wheel Cone Selection

Here's my rule: The tighter and "techier" the course for is for the hill, the more coning I want to keep my wheels glued to the pavement. If the course isn't full of BAD techy offsets, go for newer wheels with less coning.
Just look at what Mollica and Mitchell race on, they both race pretty coned wheels especially on G/S but those two guys are flying when they do.
I've been at races with Stridey and on the T/S(and other stuff too) he's pretty quick so I can't discount his advice either I guess. Hey, by the way, welcome to CSA, if you're ever in the neighborhood come to one of our races.

Well I prefer to use almost new wheels, ie just broken in, maybe 1 run max for 'big occassions'.
To my mind coned wheels are slower, but each to their own. Its what works best for YOU that matters.

interesting. my manx back wheels are coned to 63mm ish. do you guys think thst on sundsy the added traction will give memore speed than harder 70mm wheels that are barely broken in. i have no idea what to expect for a gs race

paul, can you explain that one part again, just the part before the second thing but before the point in the middle where you digressed about the first point? yeah I think Cap'n Dave needs to hear it first hand. btw I love all my coned 'zags and 'spots, good advice!

One more thought: I won't even use brand new wheels to race on, Once they're "coned to perfection" for racing, they are no longer day-to-day use slalom wheels and they become "Big Race Day Wheels" with good fast Race Day bearings and stay behind the glass and brought out for racing only. I use the brand new wheels on for non-racing slalom sessions until they're coned in.
When I enter any "Big" race, I make sure every set has been coned in for the best combination of speed and traction(those are sort of inversely related but there is a happy medium "sweet spot") so you're straight roll speed will be slower than with brand new wheels but because you now have more traction to really power the turns and be more confident on the offsets, you'll be faster than with brand new wheels.
OK, So I think I've probably made my point enough for now, would anyone like me to repeat it some more, Maybe I'll drink a pot of coffee and call Capt'n Dave up and explain it all to him, I bet he'd like that.

Malcolm and his Coned wheels

Hey Malcolm! Yes get some new wheels, but KEEP YOUR CONED WHEELS!!!!!- Coned wheels have more traction, sometimes a LOT more. Keep them handy for those super difficult techy courses with bad offset cones that make everyone slide out on, you'll be the king and glad you kept them. In fact, the "Big" races have gotten so competetive and techy most of the time (at least on Tight and General/Hybrid/Special-depending on what continent you reside), winning often comes down to traction and control. To quote Richy Carrasco, "If I'm gripp'in, I'm ripp'in". Only get rid of coned wheels when they're sooooo badly coned that they've lost so much speed that you're happy to give them to some slalom grommet just learning, you'll both be glad you did. Hey Dan, I got 2 8mm'd Seismics you can borrow and try out and experiment with if you're interested. Actually any of you guys are included this offer too.
130mm with a 30 degree baseplate(it's a little better than when you saw it last, but not fully re-machined as we talked about).
100mm with a 45 degree baseplate.
I can switch baseplates or just send you both, you can borrow both and if you really like one or both you can buy them. If you want to use them for rear trucks you WILL need heavier springs than what is in them(like dark green or purple ? I think).
Let me know SOON as I will be sending some stuff to John Gilmour for his slalom program back east. Adios-Paul
