On 5/2/2007 Same Guy as Before wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hey, I just checked www.salemsbd.org and they(the Soap Box Derby Club) are running a 3 day event on Fri-Sun May 25th-27th. So, I'm thinking that marking the hill up with multicolored circles prior to their event might annoy them and obviously I won't be able to mark the course while they are using it so I'll likely mark courses on Tues May 29th or later on a day before going to work. Again, let me know, - P

Calling PAT CHEWNING: State Games Salem SBD Course Marking
On 5/2/2007 Paul wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

PAT - Do you want me to set courses again at the Soap Box Derby Hill? We'll be moving soon(probably the bulk of it Sun/Mon 27/28 May) so I may have to do it Tuesday May 29th. Or I may try the week before. Also, the way things are going at work(lots of extra hours) I may not get a chance but I'll do what I can if you want me to again. Let me know - Thanks, Paul

On 4/27/2007 The Marshall wrote in from United States (168.103.xxx.xxx)

The race went down in overall good conditions; clear skies, no wind and very little water in the ditch. John Law made a guest appearance and shut the race down after 15 racers. The final 8 racers snuck up a few hours later and fiished their heat. Unfortunately the wind had kicked up and a flood was released above the Tramway bridge. The racing was wild and burly as the racers hydroplaned at 30 mph through an inch of water for 100 scary yards. Cabbage took a digger in the heaviest section but O'Shei, West, Angelus, Lynn, Cody and the McLaren crew powered through in one of the gutsiest displays of charging ever seen in that ditch.

The race was called after a single heat due to high winds and uncooperative law enforcement officers. The new technical course claimed 8 riders to DQs. When the dust cleared the trophy remained in New Mexico as Will Brunson took out reining champ Ken Mollica by a scant .14 sec followed by Mitchell, Palmer and Jim Z.

Regularly scheduled practice in Portland?
On 4/26/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

I've been practicing 3 times a week at a hill in Beaverton. I've got the neighbors trained to enjoy the show (at least not pull a gun on me). I did this by talking to the joggers and bike riders as I skate, and by offering my tools to the dad who needed to tighten the training wheels on his daughter's bike, and by time-sharing the road with the street hockey players.

So I think this hill could handle about 3 or 4 very well-behaved and quiet racers for regular practice sessions. Give me a call if you want to join me.

And what days are people going to Mt Tabor on a regular basis?

When I dropped of the timing equipment, Josh Burt was sooooo ready to go to NM and do the Ditch Slap (multiple races in ditches). Let's wish him good luck and a great time at the races -- the only CSA racer at the Ditch Slap.

Hey Dan,, thanks for posting the Barci memorial info,,,,I never had the pleasure to meet Bob,,though the footage on you tube really brought back some fond memories of racing the MT Baker Banked slalom event,,,,I raced it 3 times,,with my best result being in 90/91 season placing 8th in the pro division,,,along with those races,,,i had the opportunity to meet compatitors from all over the states and canada,,, hooking up with some locals and raging the Mt. baker's awesome terrain and the meggaamounts of powder snow that Baker is known for...

god bless Bob and his pioneer efforts for so many snowboarders that have had the MT. Baker experience.

Clarification on Oregon State Games
On 4/17/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

I received several questions about how to sign up, who is eligible, what is "longboard" slalom, etc. The official State Games of Oregon site may confuse some people about eligibility for this race. I hope this answers some of the questions.

There are only two main points:
Official signup is at stategamesoforegon.org
EVERYBODY can enter. (Yes, EVERYBODY)

#1 Anyone and everyone can enter. (PROS, people from europe, other planets, whatever)

#2 Only the eligible people can receive Oregon State Games medals.
A) Amateurs only are eligible
B) People from states of OR, WA, ID, CA, NV only (adjacent to OR)
C) People from states without a slalom skateboard competition (only Oregon has this)
D) People in clubs or who regularly train/compete in Oregon (anyone who has EVER competed in Oregon is an honorary member of CSA and is eligible) -- that's my interpretation and I'm in charge.

#3 The classes of competitors (for the purpose of OSG medals) are age division ONLY. There are no divisions for experience, gender, equipment, team, state, etc...

The way the contest is going to be run is like this:

i) For the purpose of ISSA points, there is a huge OPEN group with everyone in it.
ii) The race will be run without discrimination of PRO/AM MEN/WOMEN AGE --- These results will be sent to the ISSA for World Ranking points. One big OPEN group.
iii) After everyone is done racing and the final results are in, we will sort the people by age groups for awarding the OSG medals, skipping those who are ineligible due to OSG rules. (PROS and anyone who comes from a state not next to Oregon).

The "Longboard" race is the same as GS. We call it "Longboard" to encourge new people to attend who identify themselves as longboarders -- but not slalom racers (yet).

So sign up now, attend, race, have fun, and then we'll figure out who gets medals. Its that simple.

I never met Bob personally either, but im sad i never got the chance to. i remember reading an old article somewhere about Bob and others trying to organize a Downhill event in Bellevue. But i never knew he also had a hand in creating the Banked Slalom Race at Mt. Baker.

Rest In Peace.

Cap'n Dave is injured
On 4/14/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

Dave Mitchell is injured and extremely bummed that he could not skate at the BBQ.

He has a broken bone and will be recovering soon.

I talked with him before the event, pleading with him to come anyways, but he thought it would be too much of a temptation to take "one run" with his broken bone and didn't want to do that.

Pauliwog Sucks
On 4/13/2007 Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hey Josh and Malcolm, due mostly to recent expenses and finalizing the buying of our first dinky house soon(more expenses), I'm working extra at my 2nd job and not coming to your races. I know, I suck.

Speaking of people who suck, where the hell were Capt'n Dave, Mel and Thor, and whoever else did'nt show to the BBQ. Are they OK, does anyone know why they were MIA?

Speaking of MIA, Good to see Dong, Burke, Alldred(and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone), back in action.

Speaking of back in action, Good to see Hughes, Eney and whoever else had injuries and stuff putting the kabosh on their skating last season.

Speaking of kabosh, I think I'll put the kabosh on this mostly pointless entry.
