Hi Rich, sorry for the slow response. I usually don't look very often at this site.
I sometimes use a tripod to film and then I use a wide angle converter lens too. I don't like to video so I usually shoot everything in the shortest time possible then I use my Apple computer which comes with iMovie to make the video's. Sometimes when I shoot at the skatepark I just set the camera on a towel and use the towel to prop it at a good angle.
You can view more here http://homepage.mac.com/garyholl and here under podcasts. http://web.mac.com/garyholl
p.s. I didn't win the 100K but we had a blast at AST and skating all weekend. We skated Claremont (best pool at a skatepark), Coronado and then on Sunday we freestyled with tons of riders.

Adam, tunnel is definitely a potentially dangerous road, although not fast, its windy and a lot of skaters cross the DY to get the fast line through the corners
If the skater DECIDES to cross the DY, he NEEDs to look ahead around the corner to make sure there is no oncoming car.
there definitely have been past incidents, close call, etc. guys sliding out on righthanders into oncoming traffic. or Crossing the DY on leftys without looking running into oncoming traffic.
Riders do need to be aware of the risks and not ride over their head.

Crossing the DY.. tsk, tsk. Someone's going to get squashed. Or at the very least a motorist is going to report you to the police.

Gary-- nice job on the video. Do you use a tripod set-up to film yourself skating? It would be great if you can share any tips here about doing self-taped sk8 vids. Like does that require any special lens to do well?
I recently bought a Sony HDD camcorder and will need to document the 45 at 45 Tour.

Gary,
http://www.freestyleusa.com/fstyle/
Congrats go to Gary Holl our NorCal bud. Good luck today! And have fun skating with Erik.
Judi O
After hundreds of submissions were received, viewed and judged by the Freestyle team, four lucky people have been awarded a trip to the Action Sports Retailer trade show (ASR) on Saturday, September 8th to try their luck at winning $100,000.
The $100,000 Freestyle website promotion which ran from February 1st through July 31st, was created to give amateur photographers and video gurus the chance to display their surf/skate/snow inspired work on a new platform and hopefully win a whole lot of cash.
Freestyle awarded each of the four finalists a trip for two to ASR in San Diego, a hotel room for two nights, $300.00 in spending cash and Freestyle swag bags.
On Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (PST) at the Freestyle booth, photography category finalists, Tom Cozad and Andrew Hahn, along with video category finalists, Gary Holl and Dylan Flint, will each have five chances to roll a set of five dice that have Freestyle’s logo on one side; if all five dice land with the five Freestyle logos facing up, the contestant will win $100,000.

Putting on a speedboard race without a hitch is pretty rare but it happens. The sun was out and it made it a perfect day for racing.
(1)James "Fukin" Kelly- $50 (2)George from LA- NDN racing gloves (3)Brian Boogie- Sonoma Old school t-shirt (4)This rad dude(i can't remember his name)
We had 8 racers and a handful of spectators. The final heat was pretty f#@!in intense tight pac for the first few turns then James Kelly pulled away from the group early and made it a race for 2nd. A little ways past the half way point i saw George slide out on the wet turn i figured at that point i had 2nd place in the bag but George wasn't going down without the last few words and pulled out in front of me about 3 turns before last straight away. I couldn't catch up... I want to thank Sonoma Old School boardshop for the shwagg and i also want to thank the drivers Ng, Nicole and Chrissy. without them we would have walked up the f#@!in hill.

This Saturday, August 25, 2007 BASA Forum founder Hung Chang and I will be getting in a practice run for the 45 at 45 Tour. We'll also be learning to use my new Hitachi HDD Camcorder to video skatepark sessions! Anyone who wants to join in, email me! (Anyone who is good with tips for action videos and shows up-- I will buy you a nice lunch!)
Rich Sayers departs East Bay about 7:45 am. Arrives San Jose about 8:45 am to pick up HC and any other old-school skaters there who want to come.
Santa Cruz - Mike Fox (starting around 10 am) / then Santa Cruz -Derby / then Scotts Valley
By the way, I know your name is spelled Judi with an "i" - I was typing fast in the post below-- oops!

Right on Judy! Of course this particular BASA / NorCal forum is always on a positive vibe and spreading the stoke far and wide. But we all see what's going on in a couple other forums on NCDSA.
Here is an update of events and special theme days tied into my 45 at 45 Tour. Hopefully you and some other Santa Cruz area folks can make it to my sessions at Santa Cruz Mike Fox and Derby, Scott's Valley, or some of the other 42 skate parks I will be at in late September and October.
Skateboarder Theme Days
Skateboarders in the following groups will be encouraged to join in on specific days:
- Skaters over 40 years old - Sunday, September 30
- Skaters who follow Christ - Saturday, October 6
- Skaters over 30 years old - Saturday, October 13
- Parent and child skaters - Tuesday, October 9 and Saturday, October 20
Special Event Days
- Purple Skunk Skate Shop discount day - Sunday, September 30 - Get a flyer from Rich at one of the skate venues that day, receive 10% off and NO sales tax at Purple Skunk that day.
- Slalom, Longboard and Freestyle Sk8 Jam sponsored by Purple Skunk and Sk8 Kings- at Golden Gate Park, Sunday, October 14 (approximately 11am to 2pm)
- Bulldog Skates Forum members Nor Cal Skate Jam - date to be determined

Beginning Skateboard Class in Santa Cruz Nov. 3

Enough complaining rants and negative talk. If you want to make a difference get out and teach some kids and spread the stoke or put on your own event and see how much time, money and work is spent. To read all the negative remarks is sad. Chris Chaput and Dan Gesmer give and give to the sport. There are other sponsors and media that read NCDSA. How do you expect us to grow the sport and get more sponsors involved so we can put on bigger and better events? There are city officials that I need to get approvals for to put on the Capitola Classic and if this is what they get to read what a shame.
Skateboarding Beginning
Description: Join world-class slalom racers Gary Holl and Judi Oyama for this one-day beginning skateboarding workshop at the new Ken Wormhoudt Skate Park. This class is to help the first time park rider understand the basics of turning and doing kick turns on a banked surface. We will start out in the flat roller hockey area and work our way over to the street course. Students will be divided into different levels based on experience. Parents are welcome to give it a try as well. Skateboarders should be able to stand on the skateboard with balance. Bring your own skateboard. Helmets, knee pads and elbow pads required.
Put this on your calendar! Only two spots left.
11-03-2007 9:00AM - 12:00PM
Thanks and let's be positive. NorCal Skaters thanks for the support and for being there through the years.
Hope to see more good things happen in the future.
