It was good to finally meet you in person, Cat! Likewise for Eric. Nice to catch up a bit with Bruce Brewington after way too long, too.
That portion of JFK sure has some butter-smooth pavement! Makes we wonder why we spent so much time on Conservatory Dr over the years.

I need heads to help me get the word out about a skate competition I want to launch every month in SF. The basic idea is to build upon our membership and help attract more people to our live music events. I want to create a competition and hand out $100 or more depending on the success of drawing more people into our events. The basic competition involves two basic tricks.... 360's and Alie (SP) anyway I need at least ten contestants to get it launced and each contestant is asked to become a member of the union @ $10, but it gets you into 4 shows free and also 1/2 off for a year after that. $100. is first first. You only pay once to enter the competition, later you won't need to pay to enter....you can win cash prizes and other stuff as we build it up. Decent live music and nice fans to boot....see www.myspace.com/ripstar_sf Thanks for forwarding this opp and reply to bandsthatrock@gmail.com if your down for it. Location 2700 16th St. SF./ Harrison April 12th 8 P.M. contest @ 10 P.M.

(from the chronicle)
San Mateo's Pier 3.5 Skatepark
San Mateo's Pier 3.5 Skatepark is a replica of San Francisco's legendary Pier 7, a now-defunct street spot along the city's Embarcadero. Rumor has it that park designer and skateboarder Jason Crouch even went to Pier 7 with a measuring tape to make sure he got accurate specs. The park features a handful of fun ledges, manual pads and small rails to skate. Minus the bay backdrop and seagulls, you actually kind of feel like you're skating at Pier 7. If technical street skating is your thing, check out this park. However, if you're looking to get gnarl on some transition, you might want to consider hitting up the Menlo Park or Pacifica skateparks instead. Open daily from dawn until dusk. 950 Ocean View Ave., San Mateo. Don't forget your helmet and pads! Skaters caught without safety equipment are subject to a citation.

"There are at least 9 skateparks in Santa Clara County, ranging from flat parks with metal ramps at Mountain View and in Campbell, to the highly rated Sunnyvale Fair Oaks park. Palo Alto installed their park in 1990 as a result of outlawing stakeboards on the street. Santa Clara's $400,000 park, built in 2000, is for city residents only. None of the 9 were built with private donations.
Sunnyvale's park is 18,500 sq. ft. built for $570,092 (just over $30/sq. ft.) in 2002-03. Other skateparks include Gilroy, Palo Alto, a second in Sunnyvale and two in San Jose: Stonegate and Plato Arroyo. Gilroy's skatepark project began in 1997, before the state shielded communities from liability, and was funded by development impact fees only.
The person answering the phone in the City of Santa Cruz office denied that there was any intention to request private donations for that city's two skateparks. The top-rated Wave park cost $1.3 million, including a $200,000 bond.
Scotts Valley, with a third of the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno population, has a public recreation area to make anyone envious. On a cul-de-sac next to the transit center, down the street from the for-profit ice rink, is a community center, a senior center in a separate building, a soccer park, and the 22,000 sq. ft. Sky Park skatepark, rated just below Santa Cruz' Wave park. It cost about $750,000. It is fenced, but not supervised. "The liability would cost as much as staffing," we were told.
The Los Gatos Skatepark that Measure D would approve is about half the size of the Scotts Valley facility."

Currently, the "Rules & Regulations" that will be posted outside the park are being finalized and presented to their legal dept for approval. Same thing with the "Permission Waivers". Final staffing requirements are being interviewed and hired. The Grand Opening event, including media representation, catering, scheduling, etc... is being planned... ALAS! We are very close to an announcement of the actual date. Look here for it soon, I will post it as soon as I know it

The Board Show

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Board Show SAVE A SKATEPARK Benefit Art Show - The Board Show was established in February 2005 to bring a fresh perspective on the connection between creativity and skateboarding. The Board show will benefit DIY skateparks and public parks in need of funds and or representation. As of Sept 5th, the Ripon City Council is trying to take the park for no reason at all. In Oakland, Boardertown will have to obtain $2.5 million in liability insurance and apply for building permits to complete the park before it can reopen to the public. We need these parks for our youth and ourselves. The point of the Boardshow is to take something they already have and put a creative spin on its purpose. The plan is to develop an ongoing art show that shows the unlimited possibilities of the skateboard as a canvas, while distributing funds to various skateparks in need. Various skaters and artists have agreed to design skateboards. The boards will be displayed in 3 cities in 3 months. The show will continue online where they will be auctioned off with all proceeds to benefit California’s public skateparks. This will continue every year. Artists involved: Dave Hackett, Judi Oyama, Danny Minnick, Kris Markovich, Ray Willis, Lippy, Snap Jackson, Red Rocket, Janet Men, Lee Smith, James Kelch, Chuck Norris, Greg Smith, Jaya Bonderov, Matt Dove, Clyde Singleton, Greg Carrol, Karl Watson and other, pro skaters, surfers, custom car builders, song writers, graffiti artists and one playboy model. 1st show: Jan 5th at The Space Gallery 1141 Polk St, San Francisco, CA. Contact info: www.myspace.com/theboardshow.
