What a day I am still buzzing. This was the 2nd time I have rode large banks in 20 years. Web Master Barleye has been bugging me everyday come on old man lets go skate he never quits. Thanks for the PUSH Brad!! I knew I was going to have fun but with a bum knee I would have to take it easy. After the 1st hour riding with my friends Brad,ED Issic, and Roger. I felt like this might be ok. Well fun got to be we skated from 10:00am untill 5:00, 7 hours non stop It was like the old days there might of been 25-30 skaters at one time nobody got hurt everybody got along. We did some train line skating sorta like follow the leader with 10 skaters at full speed if one went down everybody went down behind him what a blast. Marlon Whitfield who is a well know pool skater tried one of my new longboards, Marlon who has never rode a longboard asked me to show him some lines. After about 1 hour he would not return my board he thought it was now his. He got it so wired he made me look bad. Twice I had to go to his car to get my board back. Marlon now owns a new Economy longboard. As other skaters showed up it got crazzy. When Michael Bream & Brad Edwards and the rest of the Gravity boys showed up I was so stoked. In 1980 I was 25 years old riding my 5 ft longboards, Brad Edwards was 13 years old reading Skateboard Magazine with me skating. Now I am 45 and I read Magazines with Brad Edwards skating longboards( To me Brad Edwards is the best longboarder today hands down) He has a great personality to go with his fluid style. As you can guess we got to skate at the same time at the same place 20 years later. This is something I will remember for a long time this will be hard to top. Compare Gilmour or any of the new blood racers racing with BobbY Piercy & Henry Hester at Morro Bay it is possible !!! Brad rode Revere from end to end with no wall untouched. I asked him to try one of my longboards he looks at it and goes I never rode nothing this big before. After his 2nd run he looked as he was surfing a big wave. Then he started doing tricks like it was a short board just blowing everybody away. It was a treat just to watch him. This was a great way to break in my new longboards. I brought 4 boards everybody rode them thrashed them all day this was a perfect proving ground for new products. Rene from Power Paw gave me some of his white 70MM they rip as they grip. I felt safe knowing I was not going to slide out at full speed Thanks Rene for suppling drinks for the whole city of LA. Michael from Gravity fed hot dogs to 1/2 the city of LA. (Michael has a great surf style on the banks.) I gave Chris S one of my longboards within 10 minutes he had it wired making everything look easy. Glen Darcy put down his camera long enough to show us some of his fluid moves on his Super, supertanker. Glen was our leader for the day he is right on!!! I think the best oldschool skater on the banks was Chris Chaput himself. Old school and new school are in different brackets. Chris has this go for it style. He was riding his plank O wood not doing much. He hopped on one of my boards and was getting use to it doing better. When Glen broke out the camera Chris went crazzy Forget Morro Bay forget everything else he just started ripping. I saw Chris do moves a man his age should not try. I myself am over aged over weight and cannot skate as I did in the past. I know that I suck but it was still fun knowing that I skated with the best new school longboarders today, the Gravity Team , friends and new faces that never put me down for being a has been. As Brad Edwards told me hey your still here still doing it !! As Jay Adams has always said SKATER FOR LIFE. All I did all day was carve & carve & carve. I tried 2 Berts on the Big wall at speed only to end up upside down looking at all the smilling faces below. To all the great skaters and friend who were there this day you rip. If you are wondering why I have so much time to write this is because my Knee is swollen my legs wont bend, My back is sore,my whole freaking body hurts. NO Brad I don't want to skate a pool with you let the old man take a break SEE YOU AT MORRO BAY (I will post the slalom from this day in the Slalom Post) Thanks Ed

Revere was lame. We're getting too old. Every one is ssoo NICE. Here we had a perfect opportunity to really heat up the action: Longskate.com vs.Solidskate.com, Gravity vs. Afroman, Abec 11 vs. Power Paw, Crooks vs. Roughcuts. And yet nobody clinched thier fist and put it in anybody else's face! Can't we all just not get along and have a good old fashioned riot?!?!
I'm completely kidding of course. Saturday was insane! We skated for 6 hours straight(some even more). I can't believe how sore I am all over. Atilla is a cone demon. One of the highlights had to be Brad Edwards, the best longboarder on the planet, cooking hotdogs for anybody who walked up. Rene brought soda's for over 100 people and kept everyone on a sugar/caffine high. DT is just a fun guy to skate with because he's all about having fun. Whenever you see DT take off, he has a huge smile. Glen D.is so dedicated to his work, he shot & filmed all day. Can't wait to see the results. The 2 guys from Crooks were really cool and really fast skaters.
I know I'm leaving out alot, but it was alot to absorb. Good to see&sk8 w/friends, good to make new friends.

Outstanding day...
No attitudes, no posturing (well, maybe a little)-everyone was super cool. It was just about what we all got into this for in the first place--pure stoke!!
Thanks to everyone who helped make this what it was. Especially to Michael and Gravity for breaking out the grill and serving everyone lunch!
Hope we can do it again soon!

Yesterday at Revere was Epic. I rode up with Solidskate Glen and Hamm. Thanks for driving, Dave. First, Glen had copies of the the new International Longboarder Magazine, so I spent the drive reading it cover to cover. Glen had to stop at Ray Flores's shop in Venice to pick up some Bulldog decks, and seeing the collection of about 50 (mostly Dogtown) vintage decks and completes on the walls was a real treat.
We got to Revere and the banks are absolutely perfect on a longboard. Actually, I didn't spend as much time on the banks as I thought I would. Attila had set up a some cones and I spent most of the day running them. My legs are so dead. It was great to be able to try so many different setups. Attila has an absolutely awesome quiver of 70s vintage boards, and I think I rode all of them. I rode two different Turners (Marlon's and Chaput's), the new Fluid slalom, Roger's Duck Slalom, a Supaflex, and Dave's cutdown Cosmic Rider.
When I wasn't running cones, I spent most of my time on the Ed Economy Fat Boy Team Bank Rider that Ed gave me. Thanks again, Ed. What an awesome board. 57", 18 ply, kicktail, wheel cutouts, and virtually no flex. It weighs about 13 metric tons, but rides great. I rode it on the banks a bit, and it handled the transitions admirably. I just didn't want to push too hard and chance taking a spill 5 weeks before Morro Bay. I just need to make a plastic skid plate for it and play with the trucks. I'm not sure whether R2s are going to be wide enough to clear the wheel cutouts. Harder bushings on the Sure Grip Invaders would be a help for the way I ride. I just couldn't seem to get the trucks tight enough and shredded the original bushings from over tightening. It's easily the best really long board I've ever ridden.
It was great to see all of the great riders that were there. The Gravity guys are awesome. Glen Darcey was there filming all day, so it will be cool to see it when the footage surfaces. I actually pulled off one and half 360's (that's a 540 to the younguns) on the bank in front of the camera. My best chance yet of getting in a skate video. What an absolutely great day. Can't wait for Morro Bay. Later,
Chris

I too had a great time riding the banks... I had forgotten just how fun they are!
It was nice to put some more faces to the names of people that I have been talking to.
I should have a few pages of pics up in a few hours (I have to go to work for a while and will do it on the faster connected machine)
Wish I had known about that school 20 years ago when I only lived 30 minutes away... but hey, its a nice short drive compared to the dump! HR

Thanks to everyone who came out to Revere High school today to make this a blasting day. I haven't had this much fun in a long time- I've tried the banks for the first time in 20 on one of Ed's longboards and couldn't believe that I actually didn't fall at all. We setup cones, slight offsets and 5 ft stingers (actually a long 40 cone 5ft stinger) and a also a timing system which we ended up not using. Surprisingly, after a while almost everybody made the 5 ft cones-I was blown away/ Roger, you are a completely different skater from we met at WLAC- with a little more practice you should fare pretty well at Morro BAy. Chris C, I am glad that you got a kick out of riding my quiver- I better kep an eye on that thing before we meet next time. . I better buy up all the fibreflexe's and Sc's out there to ake sure that you ride that tunrner at the big race- man you could pump those boards of mine fast!!! Impressive! Chris S. your tight slalom was as impressive- you definitely got it in you, little more practice and the right setup and you're on my man! There are 5 weeks left to the big one - enought time to tweek adjust, shape up, get focussed- there will be surprises at MB and todays riders will be better, much better in 5 weeks. Rene, MArc, Glen, Michael, thanks for coming out as well. We need new slalom products bad and you guys are listening. Thanks for bringing out some of the new stuff to share. Anyway folks, after 50+ runs my legs are shot- my body has shut down and I have a frozen smile on my face that'll get me right through Easter weekend. We have to this sort of thing again before MB. For the rest of the night, I'll be Mr Merlot.

Brad knows what he is talking about when he asks, "isn't a Coleman really a Bertleman or Bert slide?
If you can get your hands on a Thrasher from September 1982, read the article I wrote titled, "Street Slidin'". At the beginning of the third paragraph I write about which slides and how to. The first sentence reads as follows, "The first two slides to learn would be the Bert and Layback slides".
Now you ask, how can this be? Why do people call it a Coleman? If you check the archives under "Techniques" you will find a post by Randle. The post is very flattering to me. Randle gives me the credit for developing a sliding style of riding that we did indeed create in the Berkeley Hills. However, Randle at that time called a basic Bert slide a Coleman slide and the rest is history.
I have ridden those same Berkeley Hills since the days of steel wheels and then as a member of the Hobie team during the clay wheel era in 1965. I still ride those hills and will until my body won't let me anymore. I don't see that happening anytime soon. Myself and my good friends that ride the hills with me use many sliding techniques. All of them except the standing slides DEMAND that the rider have a sliding glove.
The sliding technique that is described as the Coleman slide is the exact same technique as the Bertleman or Bert slide. Brad you are 100% correct on this one.
The difference is that Bertleman did his on Waves and mostly on Banks. We did the Bert slides and many other slides with slide gloves that allowed our slides to lengthen to what has now been measured at the longest at, 250 feet. This was done at Hiller Drive in Oakland, California by Chris Gilmartin. He was going Approximately 50 when he began his slide.
Being recognized around the world as the individual who started this sliding style of riding brings incredible pride. This is enough! I get to meet skaters and make friends In Australia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, France and Korea. If I had the money you would have to know that I would travel to every race and as many countries as I could to continue skating and sharing the thrill of this activity, Skatebording.
Let's honor Larry Bertleman, a fantastic multi-sport individual by setting the record strait and continue to call what is commonly know as a Coleman slide a Bert slide.
There is a slide called a "Cliff Slide", named by Rich Dunlap, famous for doing the sliding stunt work in both "Thrashin" and "Gleaming the Cube". The Cliff Slide is where a regular footed rider approaches a sharp right hand turn and does the first half of a Pendulum slide, then takes the rest of the turn backwards before reverting 180 degrees back to your normal stance. Reverse this for goofy footed riders. Is anyone getting confused yet?
As I told Manu when he actually appologized unnecessarly to me regarding the Media calling the sliding techniques, "Euro Style". My response was and still is, Call sliding what you want. Just keep teaching it to everyone you can. The more people that learn sliding techniques will make it a much safer sport. MAKING THE SPORT SAFER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE WHOLE SLIDING PHONOMENA! The skating world now has these techniques but not everyone uses them. They are easy techniques, getting people to try it is often the task. Please pass these techniques along to others.
Enough said,
Cliff Coleman

For no good reason (POP) there goes the knee!!! Today I bought a Metal knee brace fills good now my Fu@#&*# knee pads don't fit. I will be at Revere if I have to crawl there. Chris S, I have your new longboard ready I will bring it do you want me to bring the Turner Black Bird so you can try it ? I am bringing 50 old school Tracker cones. highlands bowl at 10am for anyone wanting to go, meet at palisades drive and sunset blvd. it's super undercover so i'm not giving out directions. if you wanna skate it you'll have to show up.

from s.d. area: 405 N. off at sunset blvd. (L) stay on sunset until you hit mandeville canyon at the bottom of a long curvy hill. if the gate is open at mandeville canyon to the parking lot, make a left into the gate and follow the road down the side of the school and park outside the classrooms. DO NOT PARK NEXT TO THE BANKS. i've seen people do that before. TOTAL KOOKS THEY TURNED OUT TO BE AS WELL.
if the mandeville canyon gate is locked, proceed down sunset and make a left at the next light (allenford). make a left into the driveway at the edge of the school right after the waterway. you'll see what i mean. drive straight until you see the banks.
where are the cones gonna be placed?

We will probably just end up taking the trolley. but just give us a date and time. maybe a place to meet before and we might be able to make it. I've been wanting to meet other longboarders because it is very hard. Just give us a date and we'll try to be there.
