Berkeley, August 11th, It's on!
On 7/13/2001 Cliff Coleman wrote in from (216.119.nnn.nnn)

Grinch, HC and others,

We can meet at a coffee shop called "The Strada". It is at the intersection of Bancroft and College Avenue. This is a nice place to have a Cappuccino and gather before skating. What time would be good for you guys to meet? How about 11:00am or noon?

If you are going to goin us then make sure to bring slider gloves!!! If not then you can be the driver. I will be coming to town on the train and won't have a car. If someone could drive that would help. We can share gas expenses.

Cliff Coleman

GGP Slalom
On 7/12/2001 Misterbill wrote in from (158.252.nnn.nnn)

The shade-tree is getting pretty big. This is exactly the kind of "racing" that we envisioned when the Fat City/Comet/NCDSA group decided to make "Sundays in GGP" a regular event. When I first read about the race, I just sat back in my desk and grinned this big-ass grin for about five minutes. Just thinkin about the road and visualizing runs down the hill. Of course I am going to need a huge improvement in skills if you jokers are going to show up too.(Not like I can keep up with Don, Gary H. or Jason anyway!) I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Are we on for this weekend? I believe we had planned to meet at 11am. Hope that everyone makes it.

Grinch, there's no escaping us. You will be on a short board with skinny trucks....or else!!! ;)
I'll bring along some extra stuff, you're welcome to use anything in the quiver.

GG Park Slalom
On 7/12/2001 Don O'Shei wrote in from (64.160.nnn.nnn)

Hamm, just curious, why do you ask?

The GGP Slalom is not intended to be an event on the scale of Morro Bay but rather along the lines of the early La Costa races. Informal, fun, low key, no hassles. It is not "sanctioned" by anybody except the friendly participants. The road is normally closed on Sundays by the city specifically for recreational uses (usually inline skate races). Golden Gate Park is specified by the city for use for sporting events and as such one takes on the implied risk of participating in sporting events there. If insurance is required (which I don't believe is the case) then we will have to rethink the whole concept of competitive slalom as few races will support the $900 per day required for it. If one were to fall and die on this course their family would do better to consider it "natural selection" rather than a cause for litigation. Any decision to participate should be an informed decision based on the individuals judgement that the racer is skilled enough to complete the course safely.

Morro Bay was a great time for all. Now it is time for all of us to take the time to support smaller "grass roots level" events that will grow the sport.

berkeley, ggp slalom, tonight in the city
On 7/12/2001 grinch wrote in from (63.195.nnn.nnn)

cliff- i'd love to hit the berk hills anytime. i don't know which are the ones to go to, so this is a great chance for me to learn of new spots.

ggp this weekend? why not? seems to be inked into my weekly schedule. besides, if i even want to have a chance for the giant slalom competetion i'll have to get some sorts of board together to compete. we'll see, but i'm still planning on being at the spot this week, and many more to come.....

clayton, i'm there. as for everyone else, be there too! anyone up for some grub before we skate, beers after?

Berkeley Hills?
On 7/12/2001 Cliff Coleman wrote in from (216.119.nnn.nnn)

If any of you sliders would like to ride the hills of Berkeley the day prior to the GGP Giant Slalom then post it here on the board. I could get a group together and we could have some great sessions.

These runs are steep and should be taken with caution! The main event that weekend is the Giant Slalom. However if you would like to skate the day before the race Berkeley has some of the best hills in the world.

There are also some carving hills that are approximately 3 miles in length.

Let's do it.

GGP 2001!!!
On 7/12/2001 Adam wrote in from (207.251.nnn.nnn)

Hamm,

Other than its organizers, GGP 2001 is not sanctioned by anyone. A permit from GGP is said to be forthcoming. All riders will be required to sign a waiver similar to what was used at Morro Bay. As far as we have been able to determine, insurance is not required by the City so we are not planning on buying it (it cost $900/day and would drive the entry fee way up!) No EMTs will be on site, though the course is close to medical facilities if need be. Top speeds will probably not exceed 25mph on this course. The course is a bit faster than Morro Bay, but with no hairy ramps to contend with.

GGP 2001!!!
On 7/12/2001 Gareth wrote in from (216.160.nnn.nnn)

Adam and the Fat City guys!

Way to go!!!! Now all I have to do is convince my wife that we are going to SF for our anniversary (8/12) and that I really need to have my boards with me!!

Hamm brings up a good point about what goes into putting on a race like this. I know that Jack put in a serious amount of time and energy into the MB races, and I am sure that this event required some serious planning and hard work as well.

For those of us who would like to put on races in our areas, can you guys share what you have learned about what is required up front to put these things on. Things that come to mind include finding a suitable venue, public property vs. private property, the types of permits needed, insurance issues, spectator amenities (if any), medical provisions and a multitude of other things I am sure.

If this knowledge is shared, it will be easier for others to know what to expect. The desired result - More Races across the Country!

Thanks - and again, Great job!
Gareth

On 7/12/2001 Hamm wrote in from (24.88.nnn.nnn)

Adam,
just curious for reasons that will be made clear later, but is this event 'sanctioned' by any particular orgainizing body? Do you have a permit to use the road? Insurance?
Is there somebody my family can sue if I fall & die?
EMT's?

again, not actually concerned, just curious?
BTW, my family would never actually sue, I'm just raising hypotheticals.

Fat City Racing and Ncdsa.com present Slalom in the Park 2001!

Sunday 12-Aug-2001 900AM in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park

Format: Giant Slalom

Single Course, Electronically Timed

60 Cones (approx.)

Practice: 10 AM until 12PM (untimed)

Race: 12PM until 6PM. We will attempt to run a minimum of 4 timed runs per racer with best two runs per racer combined to calculate the finish order. If the number of racers allows we will try to allow a greater number of timed runs but any such increase will be announced in advance of the beginning of the timed runs.

Start: The race will start in a marked box approximately 15 feet from front to back. The board must stay in the box during the start and both feet must be on the board prior to exiting the start box. The start wand will be 2-3 feet in front of the box. The racer will start at will and time will begin at the activation of the wand.

Course: The course will be a mixture of offset and straight cones with the offsets being significantly off the fall line. The tightest allowable cone spacing will be 6 feet center to center.

Surface: The course will be laid on asphalt which is in good but not excellent condition. It is similar in texture to Morro Bay but the street is steeper, with some patching. A grip vs. speed wheel choice will be necessary.

Finish: The finish will be IR eye set at approximately ankle height with a not very steep downhill runout.

Entry Fee: $10. Half of the entry will go toward organizing expenses and half will go into a winner take all pot.

Prizes: Ncdsa.com is currently soliciting sponsorship and prize donations. Please contact webmaster@ncdsa.com.

Cyber Slalom: If an appropriate venue and timing system can be arranged we will setup a separate Cyber Slalom run that riders can try out during the day.

Location: See map for "Conservatory Dr W"

More info to come.
