I'll be boarding the Amtrak in a few hours for the ride to Berkeley. I grew up in this town of countless downhill roads. After traveling the world I still consider Berkeley and the San Francisco Bay heaven.
It's been almost three months since the World Slalom Championships and I will finally be riding a skateboard again. I can't wait! To do what you like to do and to share the experience with your friends is fantastic.
Saturday I'll be meeting many riders to skate the East Bay Hills. First we will ride Old Tunnel Road, three miles long with turn after turn. You can step on at the top and never have to push again until you reach the bottom. We will then travel to Claremont Road. This is steeper than Tunnel Road has both sharp turns and straights and the pavement is smooooth. It's probably one and a half miles in length. Next we will drive over the top of the East Bay Hills along Grizzly Peak Blvd. We can chose to ride the downhill section of Grizzly, over a mile long with views of the San Francisco Bay, or continue driving until we reach The Buena Vista run. The Buena Vista run is one and one half miles of steep winding roads. It has fifteen turns that are at least 90%. Finally we will then drive to Centennial Road. This is the best downhill road that I've ever seen! Great pavement, very steep and very fast if you want it to be. It drops through beautiful Strawberry Canyon for one and one quarter miles. The road is also very smooth as are most of the roads in the East Bay Area. Almost all of them were paved about two years ago.
When the skating is over we will then go to the get together at the Comet Skateboard factory. Food and drink and the chance to share our thoughts about the days skating and the next days racing at Golden Gate Park. This will be a memorable weekend!
I'm sure some of the locals will want to fly down the hills, however I want to finish the session without anyone getting hurt. We're just out there to have some fun. Rene, thanks for the new helmet! I'll be wearing it.
For those that are coming to share the experience, I'm looking forward to skating with you. For those that can't make it, we wish you were here!
Where ever you are, skate safe and have fun.

Lauren -
If Attila can't find something for you, I'll have at least 3 boards in tow. Just look for the blue Morro Bay Slalom Club shirts !
ps: my daughter Lauren (12yo) will probably be running cones at the upcoming Cambria race

hi there;
Odd request, but I'm wondering if someone would be willing to lend me a slalomish board to ride with in the event this Sunday, the boards I've got wouldn't really work for cones.
I've only ridden slalom boards and cones a couple of times, but I'm stoked to enter the event for fun!
help a sistah out.

One friendly and considerate 36 year old skater that will sleep on your floor in San Francisco or Berkley, for one night only! I’m riding with Cliff in Berkley this Saturday, then going to the GGP Slalom event on Sunday. So all I need is a little floor space, and I’ll bring my camp mat and sleeping bag. Don’t delay! Respond right away! -Mathew

If anyone could bring a video camera to the Berkeley session there are some great hills to shoot. I don't have one so I'm hoping one of you can bring one.
A digital camera would be great also. Then maybe some of the pics could be posted on the web for others to see.

rules clarification...

Yikes, I just wanted to correct an incorrectly stated rule for the DC Summer Night Slalom Sessions season ending race. I had noted that once the starting line was crossed, op portion of the rider's body may touch the ground. This is incorrectly stated, because it is entirely possible that the racer's push foot could still be on the ground, within the box, after the front wheels have crossed or breeched the starting line.
The rule is better stated as follows:
The rider and the board, where they contact the pavement, must remain entirely within the confines of the box, not even touching the lines, until the "Go" command. After the "Go!" command, no portion of the rider's body may make contact with any pavement outside of the starting box, until after the board and rider have fully crossd the finish line.
In the head-to-head, elimination finals of the race, the clock will start on the "Go!" command. The starter will ask, "Racers ready?". This is a question, not a command. The starter will not proceed until he has received an affirmative word or gesture from each rider. When both riders have indicated their readiness, the starter will count, in a clear, loud voice, "Five... Four... Three... Two... One... GO!" We will work with our starter, in advance, to have that count be steady, and to approximate one second intervals. The format of the preliminary or seeding heats will depend on how many riders are registered, and the timing system will be used to support whichever format is chosen.

DC Summer Night Slalom Sessions - Season Finale

While we are very sorry to hear that the D.C. Downhill Classic was cancelled, the September 8, Season Finale of the DC Summer Night Slalom Sessions is not. In fact, for the lack of the downhill event during the daytime hours, I may expand the event into a mini-Gathering during the daytime, with the season ending "Dash for the Cash", Dual Slalom race still scheduled for the evening. All are welcome, rookies and veterans alike. The entry fee for the race is $20, with the purse being divided 60%/30%/10% among the top three finishers. The course(s) will be 50-60 cones, set in what is now being called the "hybrid" course style. The start will be from a 3'x5' box. The skater and board will remain entirely within the confines of the box, including the lines, until the "Go!" command. After crossing the starting line (at the downhill end of the box), no portion of the rider's body may touch the ground. In other words, there is NO pushing after crossing the starting line; and, by design, very little pushing within the box. Practice your best explosive and/or crowhop-type starts.
Please send me an e-mail, if you are planning on attending this race and haven't yet notified me. Thanks.

David,
I'll see you at the GGP and I'll be happy to give the information needed to do a pendulum. There aren't any hills steep enough to do a very good one in GGP but I'll talk you through it.
Don, thanks for the information regarding Eli. I was going to call there and get ahold of him at work.
Eggman, You should call Mathew Schriber and see if you can ride with him.

Mathew,
Glad you're coming! HC from San Francisco will be there and possibly some of his friends. I've contacted some of my friends from the East Bay and they will probably be there also. What about Eggman? Haven't heard anything from him in ages.
I'll try to get ahold of the Hawaiian and Eli Smouse. They would be fun to ride with.
Anyway, a reminder, 12:00pm Saturday at "The Strada" coffee shop. Corner of College and Bancroft Way. Everyone is welcome.
We will probably start out on some long mellow roads and then take it to the steeper ones.
