Okay, it may be half true that the kids like me. I don't bore them with detailed skate and race analogies, I just do a headstand and wave to them. The really young ones think that because of my helmet, I'm Buzz Lightyear. When I say "to infinity and beyond" and mention Sheriff Woody, Hamm, Rex, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Bo Peep and Andy, they're sold. Later, when I emerge from behind the van without the helmet, they just see an old guy in some sweaty leathers.

Saturday 9/15/01 4:00pm. Girard Street and Diamond Ave. , Gaithersburg, MD http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/share?s6x6odvba91cnuoy I haven't heard much response on this. I've purposely decided not to go to Park and Ride so not to thwart GBJ's efforts in getting permission to use the site. If I don't hear from anyone, I may or may not show.

Roger, I understand Arab's point that it's not polite to swim in someone's pool and piss in it. I've had skate spots I called my own, closed since the 70's. Sometimes due to people being jerks, other times just due to a big public presense. I didn't sense it as localism, but as concern over a friends skatespot.
Arab, I understand Roger's point that it's a public pool. I quit surfing due to the jerks in the water, who were willing to kill someone over a lost wave they thought they owned. I hate localism and whole bad vibe thing, but like I said, I didn't read you apprehension as localism.
I consider both of you my friends and don't like to see you guys rocking the boat.
I like you Chris, feel special.

It appears that I enjoy the best of both worlds. No one likes me and I still get to drink from Roger's cooler.
See y'all at WLAC. I'm going to kick some major butt the old-school way. On my board.

Arab/Roger,
I like you both! And it takes a whole lot more than harsh words or attitudes or anything like that for me to not like someone! (Unless it's bad talk about my little brother Rooney or my mom... then he'd better pack a lunch, cause it's on!)
Seriously though, I just don't like to see guys I know and like, picking at each other, thats all...
I just wanted to say peace and my peice... H (nothin' but love) R

Arab, don't flatter yourself. I am not after your friendship and don't care what you think.
People do not have to be friends or think well of each other to have peace. I really don't think that you have learned that. This is not a jab, just honesty.
Dude, I know there is a good side to you when one of your buttons is not being pushed. They are your buttons, don't expect others to tip toe around them.

Arab,
You're too much dude... too negative to take serious right now. I am sure you have issues in your life (as we all do at some point or another) but to continually slap an out stretched hand is a bad thing.
If this means you want to fight with me too, then for that I am sorry. Besides, it won't do any good, because I won't fight with you.
Roger is a very cool, mellow, giving, caring guy... and your being a jerk. Sorry to post this here rather than face to face, but this is a public fight, so a public scolding was in order. Consider yourself scolded... now go to your room... and don't come out until you can play nice with your brothers... HR

I totally agree with there being heathy concern. I had no idea that a race was brewing, there is a very big difference between a hand full of people casually riding and racers with a timing system. An "outlaw" race at La Costa would be a very bad idea, and if that was where you concerns where coming from Arab, then I apologize on that point.
It was on the topics of territorialism and perceived disrespect that my previous post was questioning. Arab, you are too quick to become hostile, your respect towards others appears to be very limited, people are tired of it.
btw, public locations can be just as vulnerable. Dump Rd has gotten shut down, GMR has gotten cracked down on, and we routinely get questioned at WLAC by the security there (as long as you cool with them they are too).

Friendly Timed Anti Stress Mini Race

WLAC 2pm Sunday- this will be an informal (un)- organized timed race. Informal practice will be from 12:00 - 2:00pm
We (G&S) will have a couple of small prices through 5th- nothing fancy schmancy- just something to add to the excitement, some boards, shirts, - Howard is also throwing in some Turner shirt and stuff- so there you have it.
Please don't expect any serious racing and official cone heads to stress out over what side the cones were hit on.
Since there won't be any entry fees, however, I would appreciate it if everybody could contribute by bringing some snacks and water, drinks, etc ...
I would appreciate it if anybody planning on attending would send me an email. Hope to see you there!!!

Roger - From my limited experience, there seems to be a big difference in sensitivity of using public venues (e.g. Revere, WLAC) versus private neighborhoods (LC, Cambria). In the case of private venues, it is necessary to be sensitive to the concerns of the locals, and an invasion by "outsiders" taking over their roads could be quite threatening to some. Having a "local" present during those gatherings completely changes the dynamics, and if any issue were to arise, resistance to resolution is much reduced. I think that Arab was spot-on in expressing his concern about using this particular venue without Henry's presence, even if Henry didn't object.

I think that everyone agrees with proper conduct and making all efforts to prevent a skate location turning into a bust. This includes checking with the locals for any potential problems, minimizing any effects on the environment, leaving it in as good if not better condition than it was found. And above all, a friendly environment. This is just common sense.
But the part that eludes me is the extreme territorialism shown by some (or at least one individual). I have been insulted and accused of being disrespectful. We just don't need these hostilities. Nobody has ever taken offense when someone skates WLAC without Scott Peer present or Barrett Junction without Frank Waterhouse. These sites are also locations of races in the process of organizing.
Arab, for those of us that just don't get your particular perspective on the topic of territory and respect, please explain. (keep it clean, or don't bother). You can take this as direct criticism towards your conduct.
This is as a public issue, no reason to hide it behind private email.

Hey Glen, West LA College is located in Culver City near the 405 and 10 freeways, just southeast of Jefferson and Overland, at 4800 Freshman Drive. This time we'll skate on Sophomore Drive behind West LA College, which is closed to traffic on Sundays. To get there, take Freshman Drive to the right turn, and then up the hill, where the name changes to Sophomore Drive. We'll be past the "do not enter" sign.
