Leaving home in the next 15 mins, will check Quarry, I'll probably be there before you, Wes. If you don't see me there, I'll be somewhere on the hill.

Occoquan Park is definitely worth riding. The hill is insanely long. The parking and bust factor can be a problem. Carpooling could be easier from the Vulcan Rock Quarry that is on the left before the park coming from 95. There is a big sign at the turn for the Quarry and the parking lot is open to the public for their 'wildlife habitat'.
The road I found behind the park is called Landfill Rd. It is off of Furnace Road and is used for Trash trucks during the weekdays. There are signs stating 'authorized vehicles' but they are left over from another prison that is closed on the road. It isn't as nice as the park road. It's longer than the Woodbridge Park & Ride but isn't as steep.
I'm only out from 11 until noon to make the 1pm Caps game.

I'll be there if it is dry. Probably around 11am. Jonathon has my cones, so we need to drag him out early if we're gonna skate.

Occoquan tomorrow

I was at Occoquan during the week. Didn't take out the skate since I was wearing dress shoes. I walked all the way from the top of the park to the bottom. Not sure what kind of speed we'll get. I'll try and get there early and find the best spot on the hill where it won't be that hard to slow down. I did run into the friendly neighborhood park worker inside. He asked if I was parked at the top of the park, I said "Yes, can I use the restroom?" He asked if I could just go in the bushes. I said, not really, so he let me into the little park ranger house. I started my walk up to the top of the park and he offered a ride to the top. He said,"I realize this is probably your exercise walk, but it doesn't look like your enjoying it". I asked him if there were many people coming through the park while it was closed he said you did get a few walkers. I then asked if there were any other places to park and he said "no just here at the top." Maybe we can find a suitable spot to carpool from, maybe somewhere in Old Occoquan, or at Slappy's parking spot. Anyhow, hope to see a good turnout tomorrow. I was at the Gathering site today, fired up a little picnic, ran some cones with the kids, all in all a beautiful day.

I just got back from trying to find a back way into the park. Unfortunately they were all blocked off. I did find another good road for weekends by the landfill.
Wes is right. I really suggest you DO NOT park in front of the park gate. This park is closed for the winter. (Unlike Fountainhead)
I would park at the old house just past the park on the right if you are coming from 95. The house is empty and was used by the warden for the prison that is now closed. You will see a falling apart brick gate to turn into. It is all overgrown and there are zero signs indicating 'No Tresspassing'. Someone driving by will probably just think you're with construction for the water treatment plant across the street. If you're bringing someone that doesn't skate. I would suggest bringing a bike to get to the site. It's about a mile to point where Mitch is holding the race. (If you're looking at a map the runoff veers by the river in the park.)
I wouldn't be too 'visible' along route 123 (like adjusting equipment at your car). The Occoquan bridge is the county border and the Fairfax cops like to hang out and nail people coming into the county. (I know this from experience.)
It's a great place to ride for three or four people. I just recommend treading lightly with more than one car.

The permit at WLAC proceeded slower than expected, and so we decided to not have the Feb. 3 race we were planning since the notice would be very short. However, we are continuing work on a permit for 10 races from April through December, and I'll post them here and on the contest calendar, hopefully next week.

Have timing system will race. The first race will be this Sunday January 27th (got snowed out last week) at Occoquan Park in Northern Virginia. Setup and practice @ 11:00AM race @ 1:00 pm. The race will be at the bottom of the hill near the boat ramp to allow for a runout. Park at the top of the park and walk/skate down to the race site. Format single lane slalom and or GS and or Super GS, unlimitted push start from a start line about 15 yards from first cone. Best 2 run combined time(run 1 + run 2) wins. If there are over 30 racers only the top 30 in the first run will get a second run. Racer's second run, in reverse order of first run finish. Future races will be on every Sunday, times and location tbd. On weekends of DC winter slalom series, we'll start the sunday race early to accomodate out of towners visiting for the weekend. I am open to suggestions on venues and volunteers to set courses, help with results etc. There will be a $5 suggested donation, to cover timing system cost. Children are free. Pros can setup a side pot.

Saturday February 2nd...2nd race of the East Coast Slalom DC Outlaw Winter Series. This is no Sunday renegade session. All out racing with nothing but bragging rights on the line.
LBK not sure who is going to take you down. But it is inevitable. Maybe young LBK will be a contender. All of the rest of us "dougboy slalom shaped" racers need to get in better shape. Or we need to race on bigger hills. Everybody know that nerves are LBKs weakness.
I will be there Sunday. Gunsablazing...

Damn, it’s going to be sunny & 60 degrees in Virginia this weekend and BoBo has just washed his hair and can’t do a thing with it. Maybe I’ll have to bang in sick from work on Sunday.
By the way, the rest of you Mid-Atlantic slalom punks better show up to run cones with Mitch because from here on out I'm not going to show any more mercy to any of youz guyz that line up against me.
