Newbie Boarder
wrote in from
(63.70.nnn.nnn)
I normally don't check out this thread because I know I'll never see an event posted in Colorado in here :( but I thought I'd contribute to the debate from a longboarder that's only been in the longboard scene for 6 months now.
I would love the chance to see the many boarders that post on here in competition. I can see to a "new school" short-boarder how the event could be boring, because the riders there aren't jumping over every park bench, grinding on every curb, or pissing off every pedestiran. But to people who really enjoy the longboard style and enjoy skating with/against each other, the event was probably a really good time.
I would love to skate with someone, who in his own words is "50, overweight" and whos "hair is turning silver" like Cliff Coleman because he could teach newer boarders like myself some moves....like the one NAMED AFTER HIM!
Everyone enjoy the style they prefer, and don't knock others style because it differs from what you like.
Keep carvin'

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Dude. What do you expect from a bunch of computer guys? Yeah, I saw you there. Were you the tall dude with long brown hair and the shortboard? No?
Anyway, I agree it would be borring to somebody that does not longboard. Sorry if there was nothing that would appear on Fox's "most gnarliest crashes ever"
As far as "everybody having like six boards or something" If you were a longboarder, you would know why. That is because everybody has their own riding style, unlike the short boarders who all skate the EXACT same way. Different styles mean different skate styles.
Oh yeah, I will pitch in another $100.00 to see you race Mr Coleman.... That is an easy $200 for you! Pretty good, for less than a minute worth of work...

Regarding the post by "someone that was there".
Your comment "ex-freestyle kooks" is pretty interesting. Modern streetskating owes most of its existance to ex-freestyle kooks. If an ex-freestyle kook hadn't invented the street ollie, ollie kickflip, etc. (I'm talking about Rodney Mullen, in case you don't know any history), modern street skating would not be where it is today.

Oooh, this category is more exciting than the crash stories! Ok, here's my two bits: I was at the races and yes, I could see how for a spectator that the slalom would be boring. However, as a participant I had a great time being one of those Deplo "losers." Cliff tore it up more than the rest of us so if you didn't think his run was cool then I guess downhill isn't your thing, Mr.Someone. Here's a solution for you: don't go to the next event we have. That way you don't have to worry about wasting a day. Instead, go do your own thing be it pools, vert, or whatever. We'll have our fun and you have yours then everyone will be happy. Sound good?

To "Someone who was there", I guess I'm one of the losers you refer to. I'm old to some and yes I'm about twenty pounds overweight. What I'm not is someone who stands around and critisizes a group of people having a fantastic time. I believe in your right to air your opinion. Although when I air mine I don't hide behind anonymity. Yes I am a throwback from a skate generation past. However, I never stopped skating and I'm thrilled that the people at "GRA" have given me the opportunity to do something that I enjoy so much. There have not been many races for enthusiasts like myself to enter. Knowing that you think differently than me, the way I would protest would be to organize a better race if I thought the one that "GRA" put on was lame. If you do, I will come and skate at your race also. If I thought the racers were past Freestylers trying to hang on to a glimpse of their personal history, then I would let my actions speak for themselves by racing these past their glory years guys and smoking them on the course and not with some hollow diatribe. You like everybody are welcome to signup and race at any of the upcoming races. Show us what you can do!
There is also a point for the rest of us, one and all to think about. It doesn't matter if a person likes long boards, shortboards, pools, ramps, streetstyle or whatever. We are all skaters with the freedom of choice. It is truly unnecessary to belittle others because they enjoy something other than we do. If the Giant Slalom was boring to you then I have a plan to spice it up. I'm 50, overweight and my hair is turning silver. I challenge you to come and race against me for $100.00 cash at the next "GRA" Giant Slalom race.
WHAT'S THE MATTER, CANT YOU BEAT AN OLD MAN?
Cliff Coleman
p.s. A huge thanks to Scott, Perry, his wife and Beau for putting on the "GRA" races.

If anyone has video tapes of the GRA race at West LA College Nov 21, I would like to borrow your master tape. I'm editing together a short video to cover the whole event (skateboard, bikes, buttboard, inline). I'd like to make it available to all the racers, and also to other event organizers. Please contact me. I'll return your tape in a few weeks, after the editing is done. I'll also do a posting here about how to receive your tape, perhaps at the next race!

that contest was really bogus. a bunch of overweight (most) ex-freestyle kooks still trying to hang on to that little bit of excitement. the downhill slalom was totally boring and what was up with the deplo team? what a bunch of losers! the younger carrasco guy was the only guy that i would even call a skater there. one dufus was even in full bmx looking leathers from head to toe! hahahaha i was laughing my ass off at how the riders spent so much time doing nothing but sitting around looking stupid. i know what's gonna happen next....either this message will be deleted from the board or everyone will start to slam me for having an opinion.
someone answer me this...what the hell is the deal with everyone having like 6 boards with them? they must have thought they were keith richards with a new guitar for each song.

Thanks to Perry and his wife, Beau Brown and everyone else who helped make this a fun event. Putting the faces of the skaters with their names was lots of fun and something that I have been looking forward to for a long time.
I enjoy Giant Slalom and I'm hoping to see more of these races in the future. I'm also in the process of looking for sponsors to help cut the cost of leathers, race helmet, medical insurance, "EDI" yearly membership costs and race entry fees. If anybody has any information to help then please contact me. My goal is to qualify for the "X-GAMES" and the "GRAVITY GAMES" to be held in the year 2000. It would be a real thrill to race all of you young and old guys at future races!
I had one of my best Birthdays ever and can't believe I'm doing this at fifty. It's always been just too fun to stop!
See you at the races, Cliff

It was so damn much fun. I still can't get this stupid grin off my face. It was great to meet people you've been talking to online, and see all the different styles of riding. It seemed like everybody had their own slightly different approach to making it down the hill. Can't wait until the pictures and video start showing up. By the way, in the picture of Eggman below, the little kid in the background is my son and the woman sitting next to him is my wife.
Thanks to Perry and Beau for all of the work they did, and to Cliff Coleman, you are the most awesome skategeezer of all of us.

I had a blast. Putting faces with names was probably the most interesting thing about going. Agreeably, the FUN factor was what made this contest. Everybody was having a great time. I rooted for everybody, and the rules made it FUN, even if you fell off once.
I have to hand it to Beau and Perry for pulling off a VERY smooth contest. Ya, if we could alternate a NorCal and SoCal events schedule, this sport will definitely take off in a new direction.
I mean it, I had a BLAST racing with all you guys.
PS...Happy Birthday Cliff!! Does this mean you might slow it down just a little bit? ...Just a couple of hundredths?

Yeah, it was super fun. The Giant salamon was cool to watch. There were quite a few crashes. I crashed myself. As did others. It was really cool to see Cliff Coleman shread it up and Joe with his super slide technique was totally cool. The tight salamon was cool too. Yeah, there were no crashes, but I had a great time watching the different 'styles'. Like foot placement and whatnot. I agree with Todd, it is all about participatin'. What did that guy from Sam I Am say? Try it you'll, like it!
