I'll be meeting with the Boardcandy guys and the Espn crew at the parking lot just south of the peir on saturday morning at 7 am... then lunch and up to the hills in Monrovia...
Should be a great time and all are welcome... kids too. Even if you don't want to be filmed, it should be a blast... maybe we can even run some cones at one of the locations!
Shoot me an e if your interested... hoping to have a good turn out! HR

PA Dan, I have Mollica and Dave G mooching floor space at my crib. Sorry. Anyway, looks like a Vans session is a go. Mollica and Dave should arrive in VA around 6pm and with the crazy traffic going south a 9 to 11 session should be cool.

Kona X-Country & Bordercross

“X-Country” is cross-country skateboard racing that has roots back to the 70’s & early 80’s. Basically it is a slalom like course that runs throughout the park. It can start out in a snake run then out over through a bowl into another bowl and so forth. Some times there would be cones or markers placed on walls that would go almost to or to vert. I have not been to Kona’s past contests but I have skated there quite often over the years. I think the cross country course they set up includes the big bowl and snakerun. It might even include part of the freestyle area.
“Bordercross” on the other hand is a new thing borrowed from snowboarding’s boardercross. From photo’s I have seen of Kona’s boardercross event last year, two or more racers run the cross-country course at the same time and who finishes first wins the race.
You might want to check Kona for the exact details about the events. What interests me the most would be the bank slalom race. I love that snake run they run the race in. It is fun to flow through the snake run at speed. Too bad the last time I was at Kona, kids at the bottom in the bowl doing kickflips had no clue that fat old schoolers like myself would barrel down the run at full speed. Hell, I even almost ran into an older skater at least three times when I would carve down the snake run and then back up it. You would think he would have figured it out when we almost ran into each other the first time. Maybe I should have yelled ‘DROPPING’ to the new schoolers and turned to the older skater and told him I would be carving back up the run so stand easy until I was done. My fault I guess.
If you have a chance to go to the longboard contest at Kona, jump on it. It will be well worth it.

saturday to be famous (in Japan)

I have been in contact with Kurt from Boardcandy (the kwik-spits co) and am trying to assemble some riders to be filmed in a couple of locals... first will probably be at a local CA beach (venice or santa monica) and the second will be at a very tall, very talented skaters place (he shall remain nameless at this time because I have not personally spoken with him on if it's ok to say his name)
The skating is being filmed for a Japanese ESPN show... so who knows, if you ever go to Japan, you might be famous...
Anyway, what we will really be doing is helping out a small longboard friendly company with trying to get some exposure for their product... maybe we'll get a lunch out of it too!
If your interested shoot me an e-mail... I will post up a meeting place... it's THIS saturday! HR

Is anyone else planning on skating today. The forecast calls for low 60's and a 20% chance of rain. Sounds like good odds to me. I will drop off my wife around 11am and then I will check back to see if anyone else is going to be there.
Bill 510 303 7718 Let me know.

Sorry Ohm, shoulda called you to let you know I was running late. If we had gone to Fountainhead, when we got busted at Occoquan, instead of following you to Springfield, we would've caught up with the other 2. Anyhow I spent the whole afternoon at a service station, after 4 hours and beaucoup bucks, my car was running cool again. Got to Vans just in time to grab a bite to eat and setup the timer for banked slalom. I did get one final run at Occoquan, with my son, before getting busted, so the whole day wasn't a wash. I bought a Vans membership today, so I have some more incentive to brush up on my bank/vert skills and come into the 21st century with those. Timer worked well and it was cool seeing those young guys get stoked on the banked slalom. The kook turned in a ripping run to blow away the field.

Slappy, that hurts. Thats what I get for looking for Mitch. Checked out the 123 pool and 3 guys were bailing water out of it. With rain on the horizon I bailed. I shoulda gone with my first instinct and set up at Fountainhead the first time I was there. Hope you boys had fun. I am going to go kick my dog.

Welp, DC area's race pretty much fizzled. Occoquan was a bust right as I got out of my car there. The threat of rain scared everyone off except Mitch, Ohm, and myself. We were on our way to Ohm's for some outlaw practice but got waylayed. (Sorry Ohm, both of our cars had probs) The rain finally came, also my tree pollen allergies were killing me. I'm typing this from the Woodbridge public library. Hope to see what few of you are left at the 7-9 skatepark session. Come and get me at the Opitz road library (near route 1) if you're in the area (i gotz to get a mobile phone). Brian P, I'm gonna call you at 5pm.

Bank Slalom @ Vans 7-9 3/9302 (also info re Alexamdria Pipes)

Can't do anything the early part of the day but I will be at Vans for the 7-9 session. I have a banked slalom run I set up at the park. Fastest time has been just over 20 seconds. Come on out and run it but make sure you have a park board.
As for the Alexandria Pipes, I checked them out about a year ago and they looked like they were going to be rough finished pipes. There is potential there but it would take some effort to make them skateable. The pipes are small (about 15’ top to bottom if that) squat and kind of oblong. The surface is not finished and could be only ridden with the softest wheels. Also there is a 4” lip about where the vert starts. If someone could figure out how to finish off the rough concrete with plaster or finishing concrete, that place would be a blast. It would take one heck of a stealthy plan to pull it off.

In my never ending quest to have spots nailed all over Northern Virginia. I did find some spots last weekend in Tysons. The NADA buildings just off Rt. 7 across from the Tower Records shopping center has a nice hill in the back where their parking garage entrance is. I wouldn't skate it until after 7:30pm on a weeknight though.
Even better is a small office complex right off of Greensboro Drive it's on the left if you are heading north away from Tysons II. Nice pavement and the offices probably clear out early.
Also if you go north on RT. 7 just past Tysons over the Dulles Access Road is the McLean Bible Church on the left. They have a nice hill in there.

Does anybody know of any good slalom spots in the vicinity of Tysons Corner, around (but not limited to) the area of route 123? I need to go to the Mac store today and it would be nice to skate-away the heavy traffic hours, plus I need the practice. I’m also interested in any area slalom sessions that people want to have today.

If you're thinking of throwing down cones on the roads off of Hampton Rd. I wouldn't waste your time. They are all private roads and you'll be thrown off fairly quickly.
If there are a bunch of people getting together I would suggest a 'sure thing' not a private residential street you've never run with cones. I would suggest Woodbridge Park & Ride.

Ok, for those who need a backup plan, if for some reason Occoquan opens before its' scheduled to open (March 10th), we can race at Fountainhead, it isn't scheduled to open until the 16th. If both of these decide to open early, Beaver Pond Lane off of Hampton Road, 2 streets before the Fountainhead Park entrance. Hampton Way off Beaver Pond is also a good candidate. Wherever it is we'll shoot for a noon start time, I'll shoot for starting setup at 11:00 am. Skating Vans from 7-9 was Riordan's suggestion, I just went with who voted most, and earliest.
