D.C. This Weekend

While tomorrow's weather doesn't look very good at all, I've also heard that it is supposed to be very windy on Sunday. As I've mentioned before, Springtime is a very difficult time to plan events in the D.C. area, because the weather is so erratic and unpredictable.
With all of that said, moving the race to the following weekend will leave out anyone who, like myself, is planning on being at the San Francisco race.

Never thought slalom skateboarding would be like surfing. It’s not as easy as just setting up cones. The hill, the surface, the racers, the bust factor and the weather have got to be all there. It can drive you crazy. Damned if you go and damned if you don’t.
Some of my best trips have been last minute “what the heck lets go” ones. Two in particular come to mind. Back in 1985, my second year of surfing, we decided to take an 8 hour road trip to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse on the Outer Banks. We were such kooks that we went without checking the weather or the local surf shops. After all night of driving, we pulled up to clean 2-3 feet overhead surf and surfed or asses off. We then got in the car and drove the 8+ hours home.
The second trip that comes to mind is da Farm race. I had worked some crazy hours the entire week and even up to the Friday before the race, I didn’t get off work till about 10pm. My wife and I drove up to NY and finally found a room at 5:00 in the morning. Then it freaken rained hard. But a few hours later it started to dry up and I got to race and hang with a good crowd. It was well worth it.
So again, the luck of the Irish to ya (aka, damned if you do and damned if you don’t).
Hope to see some of you tonight and Saturday.

The weather is looking bad for our race tomorrow. The chance of rain has increased to 50%. I know that a few guys are still planning on being in the area. So if it is dry tomorrow then the race in on. If we get rained out then we will still try to have a race on Sunday (at the Park and Ride) however it will not count toward series points since this schedule change may prevent some of the points leaders from being able to make it. We will try to run the next series race next Saturday on the 23rd. Weather permitting.
If this does not seem like a fair solution then I am open to any objections and suggestions.
If you want to call me tomorrow to get an update my cell# is 703-901-5167. You guys up in NY/NJ/PA if you want to come down tomorrow, if we get rained out, you are welcome to stay at my place and race on Sunday.

Brian P, Kenny and Dave G are now threatening to arrive early. They think we should try to pull of a 7 to 9. I warned them of the tiny little traffic issue in NOVA not to mention 95 south. Also, less kooks at 9 to 11.

I am probably going to ride Vans tonight with Tway if anyone wants to stop by. 9-11 session.
I use the 90A street G's for all my park riding. They are super fast on concrete and in pools. A little slow for ramps and wood.

lbk,
For the Banked Slalom at Kona, try the "Gravity 90a Street Gs". They were very popular last year and Brad Edwards won riding them.

Hugh, recommend that they do the reverse. Film the Monrovia hill in the morning and the beach in the afternoon. Mucho better light. The Monrovia hill is in the shade in the afternoon. The old Schroeder clip I did was shot in the afternoon and required a bunch of video post tweeking to make it show up.
have fun.

vexmex2,
Bring some sunglasses to skate with. The glare can be awful in full on sunlight especially in the pool. Also make sure you keep hydrated because it can be real hot even this time of year. I would also bring some different wheels. Last time I used some 95a Spitfire dual cores (kind of wide like they should be) but they were a bit slower than I wanted. I tried some old new stock softer wheels but they mushed too much. Maybe the bones bomber 95a wheels would do better. I’m actually at a loss for wheel choice for the bank slalom race.
Lastly just take the park in for what it is, “History”. Show up early because you got to get signed up with waivers and you got to take a verbal test if Mom is running the counter. Yep you got to read the rules and she will quiz you on it. I failed my first time and had to go to remedial. Her sons aren’t as right by the book but Mom is cool. Show her and the staff some respect an you will have a blast. I love Kona. You skate there and it feels like you are back in the 70’s.
DR
PS; check out St. Augustine’s new public park. It looks awesome for a new school park. Oh and keep your head up while skating Kona. I hope to be there with some of the Washington DC crew.
