I raced in that Capitola Classic and I don't remember if Denike wore a speed helmut. I do remember thinking that he and Hickey were both above the field because they had nylon speed suits as worn by ski racers. I raced in rectors and that was the first time I recall seeing a guy run a DH in a speed suit. Leathers were common and were required at Akron and Laguna Seca, I think. The speed suit was the key factor. I'm not sure but I think Hut was there and lost which was rare but I may be mistaken. Hutson didn't loose much.

For those not going to San Francisco, I'll have my timing system ready to race at Girard Street and Diamond Ave in Gaithersburg this Sunday at 1:00pm. Setup and practice start at 12:00pm. Format is single lane slalom, two runs, add your 2 runs. Depending on turnout we can have multiple courses, multiple races and even duels.

DC Outlaw Series

Brian,
I'll volunteer to write the first draft of a more extensive rules package for our series. Upon completion, I'll email it to those who have raced with us (if I have their email addresses) and post it here for suggestions and comments.
As Mike mentioned, I agree that we need to build in some flexibility to accomodate folks who make the commitment to travel long distances to race. We also need to make sure everyone has a clear understanding of the rules, which will include contingencies for inclement weather, before they plan their trip.
Please send any thoughts or ideas to my email address. My schedule no longer allows the time to consistantly check this site, though I do read all emails.
Curt
PS: Brian, Setting that wicked course yesterday, knowing that the race might well rain out, was brilliant. Though we didn't get the race in, we all had a chance to test our limits.

I like to run the Patriot Center parking lots at George Mason U. on weeknights in NoVa. You can't set up really long runs (about 35 cones) but it's lit, safe, and the university police have no problems with cones. I actually think I'm going out there right now.

Mike I agree, knowing now that it seems like wind conditions pick up after noon in this area. An earlier start time is beneficial for course conditions. However it limits the ability for some of the guys traveling from PA and NJ to participate. I am really learning a lot about putting on races by doing this series. To bad today was such as bust. At least we got a little practice in before the rain started. Keep on offering suggestions. Whatever we can do to make it better I am all for. What we really need is better locations that are legitimate. So everyone keep you eyes open.
I need some hard-core practice for Catalina. Do any of you guys have a weeknight location in Nor Va.

Brian. A suggestion.
When putting together the race outline, maybe a weather clause should be considered. It could give you the option to push up or back the race time due to weather. I am sure this idea needs more thought but they do this in the surf contest world.
Any thoughts on this?

Brian, I tried to call you a few different times. Slappy and Dave R, if you want some company to ride some garages with, email me your phone numbers - bigwheel@eudoramail.com.

I ran a solo session at the dump today. After about 20 runs I was really picking up speed sliding through every gate. I shoulda figured this old body was getting tired as on my last run, I had way too much speed going into the run-off. Hit some loose gravel and slammed on my right hip again.
Gonna have to spend more time sweeping it down next time. Saving grace is I was wearing my Crash Pads. Still got a hipper but I think it`s just the old bruise resurfaced.
I`ll be there next saturday....anyone want to come and run cones??? Hopefully I`ll have my new Turner cones and I can set a bigger course or maybe even a dual.
Now I`m off to da beach as all the locals are getting together at the paddle ball courts. Sunny, 80+ degrees, fresh betties (spring break), and cold frosties....what more could I ask for?
