The Shnitzel Challenge
Race Location: Kimberley B.C. Canada Start: Top of Halpern at Selkirk School Finish: Middle of Rotary Drive at Mckim School Course length is 1km = 1000 meters
Race Date: Sunday July 21’st, 2002 Time: 2pm - 4pm
Race Fee: Each racer will pay $50 entry fee
Racing Format: Practice · Each competitor will get 2 non-timed practice runs (no more)
Qualifying · After practice runs are complete qualifying will begin · Each competitor gets one qualifying run and it will be timed · The riders will be divided up into several packs of 8 racers according to their qualifying positions · For example: If there are 16 racers total then the top qualifier will lead one pack and the #2 qualifier will lead the second pack. Third qualifier will follow #1 and fourth will follow #2. And so on………
Preliminary Racing · Each pack leaves the start line one racer at a time in order of their qualifying time. · The pole position rider leaves first with ONLY one push. · Immediately afterwards the second qualifier leaves with one push · And so the pack continues leaving one at a time and heading down the course. · The order the riders cross the finish in will determine the order they leave the start for the next round. · This is repeated for 4 rounds (4000 meters) · The first rider across the finish after the 4 laps is the winner of that pack! · Top riders of each pack will go on to finals. · The number of racers that go on to finals from each pack will be determined by the total # of racers. Example: if there are 16 racers total then they will be split up into two preliminary racing packs. Then the top 4 from each pack will go onto the final pack of 8. If there are 32 racers total then the top 2 racers from each pack go on to the final pack of 8.
Finals Racing · The top riders of each pack will move on to finals. · Once again the top riders are ordered according to their qualifying times. · This final pack leaves one at a time and does 4 laps just as before. · The first rider across the finish line after 4 laps is our grand winner!
Racing Rules · No speed mooching. · The only intentional contact allowed is to warn other riders of your presence. A slight tap on the arm or body is acceptable. · Only one push out of the start gate. · In the event of a fall a rider may have one push to get moving again, no more!
Equipment Rules · Riders must stand on skateboards. No lying down, only feet are permitted on the riding surface of the skateboard. Grabbing the board with hands is also permitted. · Skateboards must be lean to steer style. · Riders must wear DOT approved helmets. · Riders must wear leather gloves. · Riders must wear body protection. Minimum body protection would be double layered denim jeans, denim jacket and knee pads. However, leathers are preferred.
I got confirmation of road closure today so the race is on and legal!!! whoohoo! I have quite a list of sponsors already so there will be cash and product prizes for the top riders. (more sponsors welcome of course!)
Party on saturday night will be wild, like 4000 people in a beer garden with lots of bands. I attend this party every year so try to keep up, up-right that is!!! ha ha ha
sunday after the race there will be a bar-b-q sponsored by our local board shop Andromeda.. Thanx Jake!
The city has arranged for free camping for competators so bring your tent!!! thanx City of Kimberley!
i'll get an arial of the course as soon as i figure out how to upload it.... More info to come as it is available.
Hope to see you all here!!!!!!

Hey DR ...that sounds rad about moving the slalom series contest down the beach...It would be good for helping spread the word about our sport. Most all the shops that I know of would kick down to support, not to mention Surfrider @ the beach.....sound good. There are man made hills around maybe we should check http://www.topozone.com/ and scope the scene... anyway, when my new slalom board arrives this week, think I can get with the Gaitherburg gang and run some cones this weekend. the countdown to folley...time is running out. i need to learn how to slalom (good) .I'm new to straight up slaloming. any takers....

Anyone interested in helping out with the Ocean Bowl Contests? Below are the possible conflicts for some people or maybe not. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested in running a Banked Slalom Race on one or more of the scheduled OC Bowl contest dates. John Dillon might be the man in charge of the Banked Slalom Race on at least one of the dates.
-> June 30th: Night after the late DC Summer Series Race on the 29th (4pm-?). How about moving the DC Summer Series Race venue, are there any places to slalom near OC? Too flat? How about some of the manmade hills if there are any such as bridges, parking garage roads, etc.? Just think of the crowds and the flow of prizes from the local surf/skate shops.
-> July 21st: La Costa Race Weekend. Not all of us are going, but then you never know.
-> August 25th: Da Farm race in NY on the 24th. All of the DC area slalomers will be hanging with Tway & TK that weekend.
Great to see that there is so much going on that our skate calendars are backing up these days.

Cabbage, skated with your boy Michael Bream in Breck. He felland popped his shoulder out on saturday and still raced on sunday. He is an amazing racer. He raced with his right hand in his pocket, or down to his side with a sling on. He was killing it and made it to the semis. I eliminated him barely and moved on. I owed him one from Catalina. I was probably lucky he was hurt. He is one of the nicest racers on tour and one of the fiercest. I told him you were trying to put together a banked slalom race and he said he would help if he could.

Ocean City, MD is having some sk8 contest this summer. I am trying to see if there is enough people interested in doing a banked slalom race. I was down there this past weekend and the session was mostly longboarders. The park is banked slalom friendly. They are having there contest on sunday's june 30th, july 21st, and August 25th. the contest start at 1 pm. for more info contact Joshua Millard 410 250-0125 ext. 682, or email jmillard@ococean.com, or just call Ocean Bowl at 410-289-2695. longboarders and banked slalom riders make some noise and lets add some events. We pulled it off a couple years ago and it was great. Maybe the Gaithersburg gang can bring the time system and we can take over OC....; let me know what you all think of this.. I'll call down and get it going if any of you boys might want to good down the beach for a good 'ol time. Whats up nor VA, DC any takers????????

I’m gonna practice slalom at Walker Lane Springfield tonight. Will I be by myself? You decide. I’ll get there between 8&9.
Slappy, I’ll check out the Manassas service road with you tomorrow, if you want. I’ll try to be there by 2pm. Talk to me about it (where to meet) via email or at Walker tonight. I also need to give you that truck part that I still have.

I thought 9-11 was the last session on Sunday? Did they extend BMX?
Wes, I'm sticking with the Battlefield being a good place to ride. Yeah, it's not steep but the pavement is nice and there's no traffic and it has a nice runoff. If we didn't ride every spot where a cop was seen there wouldn't be too many places to ride.
