NJ?
On 7/29/2002 Noah wrote in from (216.133.nnn.nnn)

I'm thinking about trying to have a low-key grass roots race/farm practice here in NJ the weekend of Aug 10, 11. I'm really not sure if I can do it yet, but I'd like to get an idea of who'd be interested if it can happen. With typical traffic, Middletown, NJ is -4 hrs from Gaithersburg, 1 hour south of NYC and 5 hrs from Boston. I kinda prefer Sunday, but again, I'm just trying to guage interest here and see what you guys think. IF it happens, anyone is welcome to come. Please drop me a line and let me know if you prefer Sat or Sun and we'll go from there. Thanks.

Slalom at the DCDC

Mitch's point is well made, about starting lower on the hill, although even the lower section is pretty steep and would build up speed fast. I'd have to go look at it again, to see how much speed scrubbing opportunities would have to be built into a regular slalom course, in order to keep the speed manageable. One good thing is that starting on the pitched part of the hill provides a significant start velocity without the need for ramps. You could lunge-start out of a box and still come up to full speed pretty quickly.

Anthony, I think moving back to the 15th St. hill is a great move. Even though it's a bit smaller than the zoo course, it is far more accessible to spectators (and doesn't have the pointy-rocked deathwall from hell on one side). As for slaloming on that hill... well... we could probably set up a heck of a GS course, but it's pretty steep for the straighter, tighter, dual course stuff that we've been doing. In fact, the more I think of it, that hill would be excellent for a GS course. It makes for a short but moderately pitched downhilling hill, but it's a world-class GS hill (particularly if they repaved it as well as 16th St. on the other side of the park). The only real question would be where to put the finish line, and just how negotiable the right hand turn onto New Hampshire Avenue will be, at speed on a slalom board. I don't think it'd be too much for most experienced slalom riders.

DC Downhill
On 7/28/2002 Mitch T wrote in from (4.64.nnn.nnn)

Anthony, that hill would be great. It can't be any steeper than La Costa and it's plenty wide, lots of runoff space at the bottom. If it's too steep we wouldn't have to start from the very top. The little back road that I think your thinking of, wouldn't be bad either. Why not right in the middle of the festival on 18th street. Whereever you have it, I'd like it to happen, would be great fun and a great race.

Anthony, I think it would be great if we could do a slalom event in conjunction with the DC Downhill Classic. I will try to give you a call tomorrow. I have been to that location but I dont recall if the pitch is to extreem for a slalom event.

Noah, I have your helment. You brain is still in it.

Whats this all ya nordnas talkin about? Shoot, it`s almost a given a FL team will be the fb champs...Universaty of Miami, Universaty of Florida, or Florida State. Then there`s the UM baseball team.

Outer Banks best fishing? Shoot, Fl Keys any day. And, oh
my gawd, have ya heard of South Beach? And dare I say that some of the best skaters in THE WORLD come from FL. Sure the Dogtown Boyz may have been at the roots but FL Boyz took it to where it is today...McGill, Mullen, Ollie, etc...

Anyhoos...sounds like this past DC Outlaw race was a blast. I can only hope to be at another DC Finale. Or maybe even the jaw ja race but can`t commit just yet. I don`t even plan on skating the next week or two as my body is revoulting. Last time on skate (last night) full on neck spasms. Might have sumtin to do with that airbag faceplant last week?

I am commited to the Moutain Stale Slalom Skate in WV. Just gonna take it easy for the next month and play it by ear...

DC Downhill Classic
On 7/28/2002 Anthony wrote in from (165.247.nnn.nnn)

I need to talk with someone who might be heading up the slalom end of things during the DC race. My # is 202-588-5542 and I am around every day after 1: 00 pm. For those who know the difference, the race will not be held on the Zoo course but back on 15th St. next to Malcolm X Park. I'm not sure of the grade, though it has a nice little pitch straight down. Whether it's a bit much for slalom contest, I don't know. It was pretty fast in 2000 and has since been paved. Chaput rode it quite successfully in 2000 and is a world class slalom racer, so he should know it's potential. Chris? Another option is to run the slalom event the next day on a hill closer to the festival where 100,000 people will be enjoying themselves. The crowds could be huge as the course is 1 block from the party. Contact ASAP Thanks, Anthony

DC Sat and the ILB article
On 7/25/2002 BoBo wrote in from (151.196.nnn.nnn)

I have been thinking about the pix and have decided to leave all the photography to GBJ. I am a competent lensman but feel his talents would better suit what I have planned. The article is done and I had my brother Scott edit it. The guy has an MA in Enlish from UMBC so I think he qualifies.

The article came out very well in my Mums [A published writer] and Scotts opinions. Mums was the tough egg. She knows nearly nothing about skating save what they look like and that I love them so. She read it and said it flowed and she was able to glean much about what I do when I go off to Gaithersburg for a Sat evening.

This was certainly encouraging. I think you guys will agree that it's well written and captures what we are about. I will have a couple of copies to pass out Sat. You can all give your opinions as to how it works. While not high literature, it comes off a little better than most skate rag fare. That said I hope everyone likes it. And if you don't? Feel free to let me know. All constuctive criticism will be noted and may influence a few changes before it goes to press.

See yall at the P&R
