I hear we may start seeing flakes tonight around 9pm especially towards the south. BrianP, LBK, WesE etc. are you going to brave the storm and head down for the 9-11 session?

To Mike Maysey--

Norski and I have been practicing at the Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa lately. We've set up two tight slalom courses and you're welcome to join us if you feel like driving that far north.
We're gonna try to make it to GGP this sunday the 9th.

An update:

I should have all the permits signed off on early next week. At that point the race will go up on the Contest Calendar. Watch for it.

We are looking at a $500 guaranteed purse (split among the top three). Also Junior and begineer racing.
This is night racing. The first I think. Many racers practice at night, now how about racing at night?

Time is tight on this one but I really wanted to get this race in before FCR got in full swing. This will be a good warm up race. Could this be one of FCR's certified races as being eligible to award FCR points? I hope so.

Stay Tuned!

I'd love to hit 100 cones. I'm in! Let us know when.
Can the Crew of St. Lou make it the Jackson April 12th?

I'll do the same 66. How close to the bearing will you get? I thought filling the viewfinder with the 12" square would get us both about the same distance from the surface.

Let's compare our venue surfaces. Raining today. I'll take the pics asap.

Jeff, I'm down with a hundred cones, let me know when you set a date.

Here's the deal, I plan on having some sort of a grass roots race right smack dab in the middle of the USA in St.Louis Mo. We being the St. Louis riders, ride on a medium S shaped hill that is about 20 to 25 mph fast. 100 cones is the norm for us. It's what we like to ride, and have a spot that allows us to set up to 110 cones if there set up at 6 to 8 foot centers. We have more than 100 cones and we like to use them, anything less seems to be a waste to us. Milk the hill for all it's worth is what we say. My question for all of you grass rooters out there, is 100 cones to much for a race? Meaning will you guys come out and race if we state that it will be a 100 cone hybrid dual race? We would like to race a course that we like riding. All of us are new to the sport of slalom only a few of us have even raced out side of the state. Will have timing systems and starting ramps to make it as good as possible. Looking to hear from all of you on this one.

Off Topic But...
On 1/28/2003 Ricky wrote in from (24.170.nnn.nnn)

Rick,
Maybe it would work if we use masking tape to make 12" X 12" (inside to inside) square on the pavement. Take a picture that fills the frame. The 12" X 12" would always be the same and serve as a scale to compare surfaces. Maybe we could throw a bearing also. Can someone get a shot of El Fuerte?

As you are marking your calendars, pencil in the Twilight Slalom Jam on Fondren Hill. Yes, things are still moving along on securing the venue for the April 12th race in Jackson, Mississippi. Had a meeting today and permits should be issued in a day or two.

This will be the first race under the lights. Practice at 7:00pm racing at 8:00pm. Live band in an ajacent parking lot. Fun! Fun! Fun!

no cracks and potholes, but definitely an older asphalt surface where much of the aggregate is exposed

there is a pic of the surface posted (see contest calendar) but i need to throw a bearing down for reference and take another shot

7.5 out of 10?

Twilight Criterium
On 1/27/2003 msk wrote in from (172.190.nnn.nnn)

My thought would be to go for it.

For the sport to grow, we have to attract new blood. Convincing the average street skater that slalom is cool is an uphill battle, and will continue to be until the magazines tell them its cool. The current mindset (at least from my experience) is that "skating is not a sport", and "competition has no place in skating". As far as the average kid is concerned, what we're doing *is* a sideshow. So as long as we're a sideshow, why not present it to people that are already there to see some racing? You've got 25,000 people there to see athletes engaging in a sport that requires strength, skill, and strategy. Give 'em a bit more. Even if only a small percentage is impressed or inspired, that's still a larger number than you could normally hope to reach any other way. Even if the surface isn't that great, a course can still be set that will provide exciting and challenging racing. WLAC has proven that you don't need La Costa-grade asphalt to have great racing. The spectators will never know the difference. All they'll know is that they saw something different, and hopefully will walk away impressed, and possibly inspired to take up slalom themselves. At the very least, they'll see there's more to skateboarding than a couple of kids messing up the handrail in front of the library...

Twilight Criterium - Athens, Georgia
On 1/26/2003 Rick S. wrote in from (66.190.nnn.nnn)

We've been holding organizational meetings for our local public skatepark and several people locally have been encouraging me to hold a slalom race on the weekend of April 26/27, 2003 in Athens, Georgia during a nationally known bicycle race, the Twilight Criterium.

The Twilight Criterium attracts crowds in excess of 25,000 lining the streets of downtown Athens, a college town just northeast of Atlanta with a population of just over 100,000.

There are pro's and con's

Pro - the crowds, the insurance is provided by the festival organizers, and no major slalom race is currently scheduled in April '03

Con - while the streets downtown might be the best venue for spectators, the surface isn't the best for slalom, and I don't want to present slalom racing as a "sideshow" to bike racing

I'm leaning towards doing the race, but if anyone would care to comment, I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Regardless, the Georgia State Championships are going down in August.

Thanks,
Rick

DC Winter Outlaw Series
On 1/24/2003 Brian P wrote in from (208.249.nnn.nnn)

ATTENTION DC Area Slalom racers!!!! I hate to cancal a race the day before but the Park and Ride is unskateable due to salt and sand and Fountainhead received snow last night and the high tomorrow is only 30 degrees with a 17 degree wind chill so melting is not going to happen. I think it is best to not expose us to this type of torture. So a postponement is probably the best solution. Sorry for the short notice.

The outlook for the next few weeks are very bad so the next official outlaw race will be on February 15th. Hopefully our area will thaw out by then. If anyone still has a desire to race several guys will be snowboarding at Whitetail on Sunday. I hear they have a Nastar course. So LBK, Ohm, WesE, Steeb, Slappy, and Vlad , I know I am a beginner but I’m calling you out.

I'll confirm the Jay sighting, Got to hangout at ASR with him today as Tony Magnusson showed he Hester and I Jays new shoe, he looks great!!!!. I've known Jay for a longtime, though we were never close friends I've had the fortune of skating with him for about 25 years, He came in and said Hi to Hester and they gave each other a big ol brotherly hug, Hester turned and said "Jay you know Arab" Jay turned and sez "Bro! How ya doin" and gave me that same brotherly hug, we got to chat for a few but I didnt want to interupt the business at hand so I said bye and let the boys get back to work. Also got to hang out with Shogo today, he kills me! Hopefully they will be back in the summer to session a pool I just helped design and build for a friend.
