If the weather holds...cross your fingers...let's skate. I've got a whole bunch of cones and was thinking of maybe setting two separate courses on the hill. Set a tight slalom course and a hybrid course next to it or intermingled. Two different courses, one hill. Come on out and have a skate in the park.

Portland Oregon 2003 Slalom Races
On 2/19/2003 Pat Chewning wrote in from (12.224.nnn.nnn)

There will be 3 races this summer in the Portland Oregon area. The exact format, venues, sponsors, and other details are TBD.

The dates are:
Weekend of 26 April 2003 "Spring Thaw"
Weekend of 28 June 2003 "Midsummer Burn"
Weekend of 13 September 2003 "Fall Final"

What to expect:
Beginner to intermediate courses. Not necessarily dual-slalom (some sites only single-track). No prizes. No entry fee (OK, maybe we'll pass around the hat for donations). Electronic timing system. Push starts. At least 2 variations in course setup (Tight Slalom and Hybrid Slalom). Formats will encourage many runs -- as contrasted to other events where you may not get so many runs if you don't qualify, or get "knocked out" early in the race matrix.

We are just learning how to do this, so don't expect perfection in execution.

Anybody from Virginia, DC, or points Northeast up for a road trip to Mississippi? I want to go to this race and it would help if somebody wants to split gas costs. I'm in Blacksburg, VA, right off 81 which is on the way for anybody from the Northeast. C'mon guys, FCR points!!

Henry J Slalom Clinic
On 2/16/2003 Henry J wrote in from (12.148.nnn.nnn)

This spring I would like to hold a slalom clinic at my school, Deerfield Academy. I have not talked to any of the deans about this yet, but I am planning to do so when it warms up (there is still 2 feet of snow outside and it's about 2 deg.) I am on their good side so I'm sure getting the OK will be easy.

Who would be interested in helping me make this a reality? Basically, I need instructors and boards so the kids can try out different brands. A timer would be great too, so we could run a simple dual and friends could race against each other.
I have a decent hill behind the library that should serve us well.

This will be a good event because, basically, a lot of these kids here have deep pockets and if they get into slalom they wouldn't hesitate to get a Pistol or a Roe (or an ICK!) right off the bat. Hell, an Hermès tie costs 110 bucks so 160 for a fibreflex or a comet complete is nothing.

So you sort of get what I am saying. A lot of kids already have longboards here and the popular thing to do is go fast and pull a bertleman in front of the ladies.

Henry

Hi Julius,

I wasn't going to go, due to an earlier slam on my garage mini ramp but after reading your post regarding the 15th...See ya there! I was witness to J. Kim dropping the mini ramp, so heck yeah he is pool bound next! Sgt. Holl IS the layback air. I will eventually land one, just from watching him. I'll be cruising around on my Beer City DP board, so meet ya at the pool, or mini.

Weather permitting...I think there's going to be a nice group assembling at Conservatory Drive this Sunday. Skate some Tight Slalom or Slalom Slalom.

There was talk of a session at Presidio maybe for Sunday as well...that still could be an option, maybe after skating GGP for a few we can caravan over there for some Giant Slalom Slalom!

At any rate, come to GGP and meet the crew.

Bay Area skaters,
10:00am session Saturday Feb 15th.
Pool School in session.
Will John Kim drop in the pool?
Will HC bring his wacky boards and talk about the technical
advantages of weighing only 98lbs?
Watch Sgt Holl pull off old school layback air's.
Watch me try to pull off a backside air to nothing / crash.
Get up early, skip those cartoons and have some fun.

Damn right, more of S-N-O-W for DC.

You can do one of three things:

1) Go snowboarding w/ the DC Crew (www.freecarve.com see the "Freeriding" forum).
2) Hit Vans w/ Cabbage.
3) Stay at home, read the paper, watch TV, play on the computer, take the trash out, run errands, get the cat fixed, go to K-Mart, shop for groceries, shovel snow……….

This race will happen one way or another so make plans. The date is April 12th. Racing starts at 7:00PM! Talked to Jack about FCR points on this one. Could be.
