i'm planning on running a downhill race in the north georgia mountains (helen) early in 2004
of course, it'll still be a slalom race, as you'll have to negotiate around the cows, pigs and chickens (not to mention the broken down pickup trucks that litter the road)

Irierider,we do indeed have some awesome terrain! Check out the ISGA calender(or the events noted in the streetluge/buttboard forums) if you can get up to New Hampshire. I have one hill, that's maybe five miles long just about a half hour away from me,tops out (standup) at 50-ish,but it's a public road,so lead/chase cars are a good idea. Then there's a few ski-hills,in the 2-3k ft. range that have access roads. granted, there's nothing in the class of GMR around here in length, but in pitch,well...

My calendar shows Da Farm on the 23rd of August. I even asked Tway about it at T3G. Tway, is it the 2nd or the 23rd?

I'll be in VT this weekend and plan on going to the dam. Not sure if anyone else will be there but I'm guessing from what everyone is saying that its worth the trip. PSR, if you don't go to NH I'll be happy to meet up with you Saturday or Sunday. BB

Crosstraining

Scrub,I'm getting these kids onto both Slalom boards, and onto longboards,to emmulate gate practice.Other things that're less structured to do are 'carve counts',where you try for X-number of carved(not kickturned or slid)down a certain section of hill. The whole idea is,regardless of how 'structured' your skating is,that you're using familiar muscle groups in patterns similar to what you do on snow. With youngin's,it's also about educating them use longboards safely,as they're not exactly what they're used to for skating.Once the skills are in place, and they know how, where, and why they're skating,I also teach them how to set courses of their own.Mind you, freeriding is also important,be it on snow ,tar,or dirt. Just getting out and cruising on a Slalom, longboard, dirtboard sk8 is good stuff, and reinforces the muscle memory. BTW,these kids are also in Gym to learn flipping/spins,and do trampoline training as well. The Bar in snowboarding is high enough in Comps that just playing Baseball in summertime ain't enough...

I'm going to be doing some Crosstraining for two young snowboard competitors this weekend (Sunday afternoon),but that's like too short of a notice for anyone else. So,Let's aim for the 24th of May,maybe also the 25th for an informal 'outlaw' event.Be sure to bring your own water/gatorade and maybe pack a light snack. There's good eating just up the street at Stratton/Bromley (Tenderloins;Johnny Seesaws;Outback{not the steakhouse: A Pub instead};Mulligans) for Apres Ride dining. For a bigger "event",I was thinking that Mid-Early June would be nice, but I don't wish to usurp other people's planning.Keep in mind that this spot is open to the public well into the fall,so Time is on our side.

BillyB,the Dam is just outside of Jamaica,Vt.,so it's about 45 minutes away, depending on what road[s] you take to get there.Rt 35 to Harmonyville,go right on Rt 30 about 5-6 miles, should be on your right about 1/2 mile out of Jamaica village.I don't have more than three people interested in giving any dates,so I'm not too anxious about planning anything yet. Those who have been know what's there. Those who haven't remain clueless. It's a nice,secluded,almost-car-free set of hills with new tar. When your in VT,let me know.I used to live in the Chester area, and know of hills there that'll put hair on your chest.Heck,I started the skatepark in that town...
