yeah, the day of the race, it was raining hard enough in my neighborhood at 11 that my dog didn't want to go for a walk. so I mistakenly figured that no one else would show up.
now I know better...wish I had trusted my more foolish instincts and gone to the park. anyway, if anyone wants to do another one let me know.

Rain/Dry Race Days

I had planned to sk8 in the Central Park Race but since a local bowl series contest was cancelled twice due to rain and finally rescheduled for the same day as the NYC race I opted to skate in the bowl series contest. Mother Nature rained upon us again so the bowl series contest was rained out again...then, the weathermen got it all wrong again when they said rain was forecast to begin in the afternoon in NYC, when actually, it began in the morn before the start of the NYC race. That's cool that many racers still raced in the wetness and that Doug Dupin won in the rain too. Everyone who rode in the rain should be congratulated for their efforts in the rain. My first ever downhill race was...in the rain....in Bristol, England in 1977...and it made for some exciting footbraking. Personally I'd rather race on dry pavement but that's cool if people want to race in the wetness.......same as sweating? No Way! Sweating gets the skater wet w/sweat and sometimes some of the griptape too but it doesn't saturate the wheels, griptape, bearings, board...and make it slick for you to sk8, manouevre around obstacles, etc. Doug is able to use both his feet(not all at once) to push his sk8bd, thereby, relieving the fatigued pushing leg with another whereby, I need to relax, stretch, and rest my pushing leg before I can push off some more....Doug can keep pushing with the other leg...by the way...way to go, Doug, on your second win in NYC. I missed everyone I had met at last year's race, especially Fred and Ian(way cool guys)...I hope to c u all au futur....and way to go little ripper Trevor.

a "skateboardriding" race in the rain shouldn't be a problem. everyone is racing the same course at the same time. you'd get wet from sweating anyway, right? a pool contest or slalom race could be dangerous in the rain. but just riding. rain, shine, whatever...URBAN RACING...take whatever it is and RIDE. but I don't understand the "pushing with both feet" thing. was he sitting on the board? was he carrying his board and running? I can only push with one foot...

The reason I showed up was because the rain was iffy on the forecasts and I couldn't do it at all on that Sunday. Maybe you could have another one this year? I know people that couldn't make it that would love to have a shot at it. In fact, I think many people would do it again soon if the weather is good.

Why could the race not be pushed back a day to Sunday? it would have been a great day for it and i could have made a movie. Didn't you push it back last year? I'm surprised how many riders still showed up! respect.

I want to publicly congratulate young Trever of Allentown PA for getting third in the 2003 CentralPark cross country race. Even through water pooling on the flat parts, he rode his Bozi MB2 with Abec11 Flywheels around the whole 6.7 mile loop before everyone else, with the exception of Doug Dupim and NYC’s Fred Meher. This was Trever’s first skateboard race and I can tell that he is stoked for more.

Some hardy souls ran the race in the rain and it was easily won by Doug (Migration) from DC pushing with both feet. Ian promised that next year he would schedule a rain date, but today's weather made the event that much more unique. Thanks to all!

whats up Curt? It looks like another wet weekend....no breaks on the weekends, you have to sk8 during the week. Rode Lansdowne today with a friend, and not 1 person was spoted anywhere the whole session, and they repaved Bero RD so a fun downhill, super smooth surface.
so what is the call?

Some weather stations say that it's not going to rain till the afternoon. I checked the NOAA report as well and there calling for a steady rain in the afternoon, let's hope it holds off till then. At least the Bouys are showing a SE swell in the chest high range with str8 offshore winds for Sunday morning here on Long Island. Sk8 Race on Sat (weather permitting) Surfing on Sunday, GONNA BE A FUN WEEKEND!!!!!

John, I was not going to be at NYC, due to Curt's contest. But you should check the weather. Saturday, DC rain all day and NYC morning sprinkles. Curt's contest will be rescheduled for Sunday, so I bet you can now do both events!

Yo Ian, Robin, Johnny B.,and others who raced last yr....due to a weather-related rescheduling of #1 Mid-Atlantic Bowl Series Contest for the same date as this race I will have to opt out and say I will miss all of you. Last year was a fun time skating w/you all, etc. Yo Doug: WesE is planning to go up...you guys should carpool. i hope to sk8 w/all of you in the near future. To those contemplating going to the Central Park Race...do so.....even if you don't have a longboard....even if you don't want to race, just go and ride the course through one of the best parks in the nation. Have Fun!

Will consider a DC trip in a month or so JD. Thanks for the good feelings. I miss Y'all as well.
Right now it's just try to get a northern crew together and skate with Wentzle.
I'll see if I can drag him down with me. Shouldn't be hard. The best skaters on the East Coast are skating down there [No offense to anyone north of DC].
Maybe we can make Wentzle a DC Crew lifer.....

Will most likely be held between Cape Cod and CT. Think water or near the sea. WRIV is coming down or I may go up to just run cones and sesh together. All are invited. Joe & Nick will be whereever it is we are. WRIV wants to get some time with a slalom board under his feet and practice.
If someone comes up with a sweet place here in Ma and all can agree on it then it's on.
Of course I'd like to go down to CT to sesh with Joe, Nick and Lisa. After what they put together got rained out they deserve dibs on a sesh with lots of us Yanks.
Please offer areas.....

The woman's 6k run in the morning will be long done when we get there (my sister was gonna do it, and we were suppossed to meet for breakfast after she finished and before I raced, but she bailed out). Pray for no rain cause the weather station is calling for showers on Saturday. Enough rain already Dammit!
