(ashvul has been switched from monday to sunday, as there will be quite a few folks in town who want to go sunday but they'll be gone by monday...)
2003 Athens Race Weekend;
Friday; 6:00-7:30, Junior's ditch. Fun for all…slalomers and transition riders. Find it, grind it, watch the viddy, then rewind it. 7:30-10, Glowing Rock Skatepark in Athens, while the cone riders head to Huntington Hill for their outlaw racing/tour of hills. 10:00-...Little Italy Pizzeria, downtown Athens...lots of scenery and that fun downtown feel for my visiting skater friends. a slice of pizza and a pitcher after skating is always good. also good subs and stuff. Not to mention the downtown collegiate scenery…heh heh heh
Saturday; Slalom racing at 10am, festivities to follow, perhaps an evening session at Junior’s Ditch.
SUNDAY; We’ll be heading out in the morning for the trip to Asheville, NC to hit the Team Pain, Food Lion Skatepark. This is probably the best park in the southeast(other than what’s in FL!).
Monday; Vans in the ATL 10am grom-free session(usually less than 10 people at the park for this session!). Then a little lunch break before a session up the road at the Picnicville Bowl.

Just got a call this evening from the owner of Eastcoast Board Co Skate Shop. Mike Ohm and myself will be helping instruct the All Girl Longboard Session next Monday night (8/11/03 6:30pm to 9pm) starting at the skate shop.
Mike & I will teach the basics (safety, starting, stopping, carving) to the advanced skills (drop knee turns, generating speed, slides, cones, etc.). So if you know any girls interested in trying out longboarding or want a free longboard session, check out the info on my prior posts.

Hey, I'm definitely up for it. Why don't we shoot for 10:00. That should give us a good 4 hours to sakte and still catch the race.
If anyone doesn't know where it is, here's directions courtesy of a post from DT two and a half years ago (talk about a blast from the past):
The hill is located in San Juan Capistrano off the Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano is located south of Irvine/Mission Viejo and north of Oceanside off the I5 freeway. Exit at Ortega Hwy and turn east (right if you are driving north on i5 or left if you are driving south) you will be driving away from the downtown/mission area. You will see signs stating: Entering Double Fine Zone - dont speed ;) You will drive through a residential area for about 2-3 miles than you will see soccer/polo fields on the right and the last stop light for 30+ miles, Antonio pkwy / La pata. Turn right onto La pata and proceed up the first hill(the fields will still be on the right) once you get to the top the hill goes back down then up again. this is the hill we will be skating. You can park at the top.

Paul! I thought you had dropped of the face of the earth!
I'd be up for an early morning session... no cones... little carving and maybe a couple of bombs (little ones) I'll see if Rooney wants to make the trip too.
Shoot me an email or post up here when everything is all firmed up.
I'd be up to going to the slalom race too... maybe snap a few hundred pics.
Chris S... how does this sound for you?
DT are you out there? Let me know if you can make it and I'll bring that painting for you!

Hamm,
Might be living back in OB soon (year end at the latest) Know anyone who will rent to a tenant with a Rottweiler?
I bet we won't see you at the dump road, but I'll definitely be at the race. We'll talk then.

Chris S and I have been talking about a dump road run revisted for a while-never seems to come together. It was torn up for months/now back to its usual crappy self. YThe place was always more fun w/o the cones
The sessions at the dump road during the early days of the current resurgence were a blast.
Chris- Lets meet their in the morning and head to the race (1/2 hour away)early afternoon. Hamm, Hugh, Ritchie, any of the oldtime regulars, and those otherwise interested, a few runs down the hill will be a blast. I don't have the MSA Minivan for our trek back up the hill, but if more than a few of us plan to show, I'll get an F-150 for the job.
For many of you it's semi on the way-How about a few runs for old times sake??

Nosewheelie(ChrisS) or anyone else,
Gnarly GS race in Oceanside on 8/3 on a wicked hill. You should stop by. The Gravity Boys will be racin, along with Orange County's finest-SSS and other FCR regulars. Sergio Yuppie will be putting on a slide show and the racin will be FAST. Its not everyday that racers of this caliber converge on San Diego County.

it's gonna be a slalom race weekend(aug 29-31), but I know there will be skaters visiting who want to ride more than just cones. the cone riders will have plenty going on in this, the land of fresh asphalt hills. for those(like myself) who also enjoy parks/transitions, I am developing a plan... Patio’s 2003 Athens Race Weekend;
Friday; 6:00-7:30, Junior's ditch. Fun for all…slalomers and transition riders. Find it, grind it, watch the viddy, then rewind it. 7:30-10, Glowing Rock Skatepark in Athens, while the cone riders head to Huntington Hill for their outlaw racing. 10:00-...Little Italy Pizzeria, downtown Athens...lots of scenery and that fun downtown feel for my visiting skater friends. a slice of pizza and a pitcher after skating is always good. also good subs and stuff. Hugh, I was leaning that way anyway.
The handful of people I tried to get ahold of for this weekend were busy anyway. Let's shoot for next Sunday, August 3. Hopefully, we can get a decent turnout. I'll post directions/details middle of next week.

Slalom in New Haven Sunday am

1) Get your arse on the Merrit Parkway, if you are coming from the south or the north, it makes no difference.
2) Take the #61 Hamden Exit. Depending on which direction you're coming from you'll make either a right or a lefthand turn. So, as a rule, do not drive past the HoJo's, if you do then you are going the wrong way! You want to head south, towards New Haven.
Turn right onto Skiff after about a quarter mile. It's a big intersection, it will be obvious. If you pass a Dairy Queen on your left then you're going the right way!
As you are on Skiff Street the road will rise ahead of you. On the right is an ugly car dealership, on the left are two big iron gates and a sign that says Hamden Hall Connely Fields etc etc... go through those gates, thats where we will be slaloming!
IF THE GATES ARE CLOSED- Keep going on Skiff and take the next left onto Dixwell Ave, then go for about a mile and you'll see your next left on Connely pkwy, take that left. Just before you pass under the highway, take a left into the business complex and park somewhere. Grab your boards and your stuff, go back out to the street and keep walkin, you'll see a gate that blocks a dirt road (this is the back entrance to my slalom spot) hop the fence and walk to the other side of the fields, total walkin time is 10 min.

I have a skate/ surf poster on ebay from the 1970's (In search of Tubular Swells) that has a cool shot of an unidentified skater throwing a bert. Opening bid is $25 with all proceeds going to the cause. I also have one listed (Free Ride) with the proceeds going to DC Surfrider. Bid high and support two great organizations.
