California Slalom Series #3 Results

The third slalom of the 2003 California Championship series (and fourth date of the race series) at West LA College featured an informal tight slalom and a hybrid giant slalom with a fast and smooth finish, but a series of 6 tight cones near the top that made it more representative of the fast slalom style. The weather was classic August: sunny, dry, and hot. The turnout was light as expected, with short notice, summer vacations, and the X games being in town. But in the end it was a very active and fun day with racing on both the downhill and slalom courses going on at the same time. (Downhill results are posted at gravity-sports.com).
The times were as close as ever, with the top 3 skateboards within 0.05 seconds! In the end, Richy posted the fastest time, but a cone penalty moved him back to second place and John O'Shei's clean riding prevailed. Many thanks go out to the volunteers who made the race run smoothly!
Skateboard Fast Slalom (best of 3 runs, 0.2 seconds/cone): 1 John O'Shei 21.844 2 Richy Carrasco 21.879 (fastest time, but 1 cone penalty) 3 Attila Aszodi 21.886 4 Brent Kosick 22.904 5 Michael Kaelon 24.169 6 Tiger Williams 24.343 7 David Carrasco 24.390 8 Chris Sutherland 24.708 9 Rick Howell 25.530 10 David Hamm 25.712 11 Lynn Kramer 25.950 12 Tim Kienitz 26.007 13 Roger Jennings 26.400
Inline Fast Slalom (best of 2 runs, 0.2 seconds/cone): Scott Peer 20.922 (fastest on course) George Merkert 24.182 Keri Tishner 25.739

Jill, I recommend doing a donations event forum on the "Contest Calender" forum similar to the "Skate Across America" listing in this ncddsa.com webpage.
Don`t worry about an exact date as we`ll know our donations will be definatety worthy for a just cause.
MR IS what a skateboarder is in the truesr sense...skate for the joy of skating.
I open my pledge with a $200.00 donation. Ans if I can do more on the behind the scene schtuff, just lemme know.
Not only is MR one of the nicest guys to hang with, but to see what he does on a skate, with just one eye, is truly amazing,,,the guys reeks of skate soul.
My prayers are with him in these tough times. I also agree with Eric G in that he definately deserves a nomination into the florida old school skaters hall of fame.

Mike is a great guy...one of the nicest folks you will find (in sateboarding or otherwise). I am wishing him a speedy recovery.
lbk...I am guessing the event in FtL will be the Tony Hawk thing...it would be pretty swank to get some of those guys out to the Y to do some kind of benefit. Olliewood might make more sense as a spot, but the Oelsner would definitely be more meaningful.

SSSS#2 is in the books. There was some good times laid down on the big GS course. The only problem with the day was the heat. It's was near unbearable.
Performance of the day has to go to Will J. In his final run he need .1 to move into second place so he cuts his time by a full .3 Way to go Will!
Check the times and see just how close the times where running in the middle of the pack. I dig the vibe that comes from good close racing. Clifton, Andrew and Josh are all over each other.
Clifton was loving his new Ick Stick. It is fine as they come. Ricky and Josh were running the new Bahne Banshee decks. 36" decks and Josh was throwing it around like it was 28". Very nice construction and perfect flex characteristics.
A few were missing from the racing this go around. Sorry those guys couldn't make it out. It hurt in the points as you can see. Hope to see you at the next one.
Here's how it shook out for SSSS#2:
1st Ricky Byrd 21.036 2nd Will J 22.339 3rd Nate George 22.570 4th Clifton Jennings 22.910 5th Andrew Eure 24.035 6th Josh Byrd 24.053 7th Shane Causey 24.580 8th Rick Murray 25.761 9th Joe Short 29.956
Points as of SSSS#2 are as follows:
Ricky Byrd 50 Nate George 37 Josh Byrd 28 Clifton Jennings 26 Andrew Eure 26 Will Jolly 20 Shane Causey 20 Rick Murray 15 Jeremy Ward 15 Alan Allred 9 Joseph Short 8 Jeremy Hilton 8 Cory Ward 7 Landon Cook 5
Thanks for coming out and taking pictures Tate. Bobby also made the scene. Thanks for showing your support for MS GRS Racing.

Dear Friends of Mike Rogers (M.R.),
Hello . This is a brief letter to let you know what is going on with Mike. He had cancer as a child, 25 years ago. The cancer has come back. He is being treated at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City. He chose this hospital because the doctors are among the most experienced in the world. He can expect a stay of at least two months. The surgery will be performed by a team of four: a head & neck cancer surgeon, a neurosurgeon, a plastic surgeon, and a radiation doctor who will implant a device which will deliver radiation during this procedure and at a later date. They expect the surgery to be finished after 16 hours. The date scheduled is Sept 3rd.
The type of cancer is a sarcoma. We will not know which type of sarcoma until after the procedure is complete. I think they are all pretty rare. The location is in the sinus and eye area. Mike will not look the same when he returns home. The goal of the surgery is to remove all of the cancer. The doctors get one chance with Mike. If anyone can make it through and come out skating, it will be MR!
Friends are just beginning to plan a benefit at the YMCA Oelsner Skatepark in West Palm Beach, Florida. The event will not happen until November 2003. They want to coordinate it with a big skate event that is taking place in Ft. Lauderdale in November (Hopefully, bringing the pro skaters to the YMCA) If you would like information, want to help, or have any good ideas, please contact Abby Gresko at 561-254-5153
In addition to the trauma he is facing, financial pressures exist for Mike. He had to cash in his YMCA Retirement fund, which was minimal. He filed for unemployment, but cannot benefit because he is not employable. He has applied for Social Security Disability. They said it takes 6 months to receive benefits, so he will get those benefits in 4- 5 months. Any contribution would make things easier for Mike during this time of hospitalization and recovery.
All cards and/or donations can be mailed to : Mike Rogers 37 Mews Lane South Orange, New Jersey 07079 c/o Aimee Meyers
You can email Mike at mrskateshop@aol.com and check out his website www.mr1skateshop.net
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Please contact me if you wish. I will be staying outside of the city in NJ with my cousin until Mike can come home.
Sincerely, Jill Gresko

NJ BIG SKATE (Review)

John Dillon & I had a great time longboarding w/ the northeast crew at the NJ BIG SKATE. The day started early cruising the local neighborhood streets. We then set up an urban slalom course in a parking lot of an abandoned JC Penny’s store. The course was wide open for the big boards. The guy to beat was Fat Boy, he was flying thru the cones with style. Then John Babiarz showed up and demolished the times dropping the course below the 20 second mark. John Dillon then tore down the course on his Gravity Ed Economy Bank Rider to steal first place.
The rains came and Rick cooked up some dogs & boca burgers. Rick then raffled off some cool swag. The Chlorine video was tossed in the big screen and we all were amused by Black Leather Racing greats dressed in preppy sweaters telling good stories about pool riding. The roads started to dry up so we headed out for some steeper streets.
As it turned out, the hills did not cooperate and were wet. A group of us threw caution to the wind and dropped in anyway. The young bucks were drifting Colemans like it was second nature. But then the rain came back and bodies started to bounce off the black top. Rick called it a day of longboarding and we headed back for more food and the new Gravity video.
It was fun to longboard with a bunch of new faces. Good to see the old dogs showing off their knowledge of riding big boards but I was most impressed with the “yutes” (20 something year olds & below). They have got that stoke! A big thanks goes out to Rick for putting on the event.

Another fine time by the highway had by all.
Massive heat, spills, thrills, and many very close races--nobody did the Vlad, though--so I didn't get to use my emergency sewing kit.
I'd like to raise my glass to the DC crew, a very fine and generous bunch of guys and one gal. Nothing but hospitality and fun all around. Not one but three or four people offered (very) generous help with my wheel troubles, and zero people made comments about my pink socks (to my face).
Thanks especially to B.P. for fueling the DC scene by putting it all together, and to slappy and KMG for sponsoring me (lending me stuff) so I could actually attempt to slalom today.
Cheers,
Rene "Team Pendejo" Hayden.

It's a tough decision but I'm rolling north to NJ Bigskate for some fun on the longboards.....I plan to set up some cones up there to interest people in some giant slalom. Looking forward to meeting some longboarders with whom I haven't skated.....and to hit up some ditches up yonder in Allentown if time permits. I think lbk is coming too....does anybody else from the MD/DC/VA/Delaware area who isn't going to the OUTLAW RACE wish to join me? Leave Baltimore early morn...we could do a dawn patrol at Lansdowne at 5:30am?! Caravan it or carpool it...should b a fun time!

DC Summer Outlaw Series Race #3
Another DC Summer series outlaw race is scheduled this weekend at the P&R in Gaithersburg. Like usual about a 30% chance of rain.
Long board practice will start at 10am sharp, racing at 10:45. Traditional slalom practice will start at noon.
I want to throw something different at you guys this weekend I just haven’t figured out what it will be.
If anyone needs directions send me an email. I am expecting a large group this weekend so everyone should be ready for some major competition. WesE is hungry for some respect. Look for him to be driving for a podium finish. Noah and UR13 are hopefully making the trip down. Ohm is always a threat. LBK, GeezerX and PADan are always looking to break to top three. KMG has finished well is every race and is third in the points. Since some of the top guys have missed one of the last two races the point’s game is close. No one yet has a lock on the series. LBK’s respectable finished in the last two races has him currently holding down the top spot in open slalom.
Vlad is away this weekend racing in Moscow so Noah is clearly the favorite followed by UR13 and Ohm.
Points Standings: Longboard: 1.Vlad Popov 200 2.Brian Parsons 165 3.Kevin Gamble 140 4.Eric Wallgren 134 5.Dave Reiordan 133 6.Kyle Bozi 109 7.Jeff Bozi 106 8.Dan Mitchell 87 9.Cabbage 78 10.WesE 65

All Girl Longboard Session- Results (aka All Girl DC Outlaw Longboard Slalom Race)

Last night's ALL GIRL LONGBOARD SESSION in Fairfax, VA put on by EAST COAST BOARD COMPANY SKATE SHOP was huge success. Over 25 girls showed up to learn how to longboard skateboard. Most had never skateboarded before. By the end of the session, all the girls were carving it up and 18 girls signed up to race slalom head to head on longboards.
Brian Parsons set an easy 'newbie' dual course for the girls. The rules were simple, 1 cone=DQ, single elimination with one race down the course against the opponent. A starting judge started the race with a "Racers Ready 3-2-1-Go" count. No timer was used, the first girl across the finish line advanced. Two finish line judges made the final call of who won each head to head race.
Highlights of the race included Brian's sister Rachel Parsons advancing by beating one of her roommates. However, the girl to watch was a young teenager who was charging it with confidence by the name of Britany. Though in the end in the finals, Britany got a bad push start and had to keep from DQ the first cone. This left the door open for Katy to edge Britany out for the win.
All Girl Longboard Results 8/11/03
1st Katy 2nd Britany 3rd Katie & Sarah (tied too close to call)
*The All Girl Longboard Slalom Race was most likely the first ever all female longboard slalom race in the history of slalom skateboarding.
**Special thanks goes out to the following sponsors that sent out demo longboards:
