Summer Sizzle Slalom Series #3 Jackson, Mississippi Sunday, September 14, 2003 Post Race Download
The Summer Sizzle Slalom Series is a done deal. I think everyone had a good time racing a series. The racing was closer than we’ve ever seen, that is, at the finish line and also the fact that the two lanes where set up six feet apart to keep us out of the street. Officer Friendly drove by and waved just as we were tearing down. Really cool of him to not even bother asking “What’s going on here?”. We were kicking ourselves all week to come up with the type course for the Finale and we decided to throw a slightly tougher course out there to shake things up a bit and once we tweaked it a bit everybody was getting though it pretty well. Our racers are getting better than they give themselves credit for.
Some notable performances came from racers like Josh, Jeremy H., Joseph. Jeremy improved from his 9th place finish in SSSS #1 to a 7th place in the Finale. Joseph went from a 9th in #2 to a 8th in the Finale and Josh coming back from a 6th place to get 3rd in this race. I think Josh has stepped up his slalom skating to yet another level and he is fully ready for the World Championships in a couple of weeks. This race was littered with upsets also.
Will J and Clifton was going at each other all day. Clifton had Will by .3 going into there second round. Clifton went to hard out of the gate when he really didn’t need to and DQ’ed within the first 6 or 8 cones handing Will the win on a silver platter.
This series was run bare bones just to see if we would have the participation level with out all the fluff of big prizes and we did. As a matter of fact, with this series we were able to give instead of take. Mississippi Grass Roots Slalom, through the entry fees collected, raised around $200 for the local Ronald McDonald house. Thanks guys! Skateboarders ain’t all bad.
The Madison Herald came out to do a story on slalom. Everybody wants a piece of us and for good reason this is a fun, challenging, and spectator friendly facet of skateboarding and I hope our efforts goes to support the whole skateboarding scene in the metro area.
Congratulations to the overall winners of the series Ricky Byrd (first), Nate George (second), and Josh Byrd (third). Thanks again to everyone who participated. We got a great group of racers in Road Kill Racing! Thanks go out to Red Bull for continuing to support Mississippi Grass Roots Slalom.
Check out a few pictures here: http://www.skatems.com/board/modules.php?op=modload&name=gallery&file=index
Here’s the results of SSSS #3: (I’ll edit this to show times later)
Finish Order & Fastest Qual Time
Ricky Byrd 15.951 Nate George 17.546 Josh Byrd 17.446 Will Jolly 18.526 Clifton Jennings 17.824 Andrew Eure 18.720 Jeremy Hilton 20.198 Joseph Short 20.997
Here’s how the series ended up:
Ricky Byrd 75 Nate George 57 Josh Byrd 45 Clifton Jennings 39 Andrew Eure 37 Will Jolly 35 Shane Causey 20 Jeremy Hilton 18 Joseph Short 17 Rick Murray 15 Jeremy Ward 15 Alan Allred 9 Cory Ward 7 Landon Cook 5
Thanks to all the racers and spectators for coming out.
Get ready…Next…Slalom Cross!

Washington DC-Capitol Chapter 10th Anniversary Celebration!
Thursday, September 18 (with or without Hurricane Isabel) Beach Party! 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Rhodeside Grill, 1836 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201 (tel 703.243.0145)
The semi-annual chapter celebration of the Wash DC-Capitol Chapter of Surfrider Foundation will take place at the Rhodeside Grill in Arlington, VA http://www.rhodesidegrill.com/ Thursday Sept. 18 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the Underground event room.
The night of celebration will feature door prises, special guests, a special showing of the 1972 classic surf film FIVE SUMMER STORIES, food, cash bar (sorry), live music (after 10 pm), and - as required - a brief chapter election of officers - but don't let that scare you away because its not a beach party any more, IT'S A HURRICANE PARTY!
The Rhodeside Grill is located at 1836 Wilson Blvd which is right at the intersection of Rhodes Street and Wilson Boulevard (right next to Clarendon Blvd) and is just 2 blocks from the Courthouse (VA) Metro Station - and street parking is free after 6:30 pm!
This is our biggest celebration of the year (actually every 2 years) and should not be missed - make plans to come and join us as we celebrate 10 years of chapter community service and grass-roots activism in the Washington, DC metro area.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED... As noted in our chapter communications last month, the Thursday Sept 18th celebration will also be our Wash DC-Capitol Chapter election for new officers in all positions. As members of the chapter you are all eligible to be nominated to the Executive Committee of the chapter. Unfortunately, due to personal reasons I can't accept a nomination to be re-elected as chapter chairman (or serve on the Executive Committee), but I will remain as an active chapter member and supporter as the ex-officio chairman. The perks of being an Executive Committee member include supreme command of all chapter activities, programs and events (total power and control). In addition, you can qualify for an automatic (and free) enrollment into the www.BroForm.com awesome wholesale discount program (save mucho $$$) for any number of outdoor sporting goods (surf, skate, snow, & wake!!) from major labels/brands. Please consider stepping forward to be nominated to assist in the chapter operations on the Executive Committee, its fun and rewarding! There are plenty of experienced chapter members (including myself) who will be able to assist in the transition for any new officers and help continue the excellent chapter community service efforts and other existing programs. Our current slate of officers and their eligibility are as follows: Chairman - Darryl Hatheway (not eligible for re-election or any position, need nomination!!) Vice-Chairman - David Riordon (eligible for re-election or any other position) Treasurer - Jacque Riordon (eligible for re-election or any other position) Secretary - (open position for any member) Volunteer Coordinator - Nanette Parsons (eligible for re-election or any other position)

Killing Time

Been busy & off line for a bit, even found myself on the wrong coast w/out a surfboard at the HB Pier killing time just so I could catch a freaken red-eye to Chicago for one day of work while the right coast had waves for a change.
So anyway, here are a few of the haps to update you on:
NJ BIG SKATE (near Philly)-
Went down the other month back but I'm still grooving on the vibe for longboarding up in NJ/NY. Hope to skate with them again soon. Thanks again to Rick at Firnspiegel
Deathbox Bowl Series Finals (Maryland)-
Curt Kimbel put his heart and wallet into a killer bowl contest for all ages. Snowboards were given out as top prizes to seven divisions. Highlight of it for me was having WPB skater Mike Rogers (MR) enter the contest and rip it up!
ADAMS MORGAN DAY RACE (Washington DC)-
The DC Downhill Club (DCDC) for at least the 3rd year pulled off a downhill race and this year had a slalom race with it. The DC Police were the coolest and pushed the race through the red tape with the city govt. Anthony proved with this event that speedboarding and slalom do go hand in hand. BTW, watch out for Ricardo he is yet another hot longboarder from Mexico.
Results (if I got them right)
Downhill (round robin point format) 1st Anthony Smallwood/Doug Dupin (tied for total points) 2nd Ricardo (Mexico) 3rd Duane Delaney (NorEaster)
Slalom 1st Vlad (Planker Team Rider) 2nd Brian Parsons (Bahne Team Rider) 3rd Mike Ohm (Ick Stick Team Rider)
Note, look for a bigger Slalom & Downhill race next year at Adam's Morgan Day. The DC city hills out here are the deal.
DR
PS, that will be the last time I head out to the West Coast for work without a surfboard. Talk about torture at one time I was contemplating breaking into Chaput's place to abscond with a bag of wheel.

70% chance of rain tomorrow in DC.
In the spirit of getting as many racers as possible to our Summer series FINALS.
I will postpone the race until next Saturday the 20th.
If this decision creates major problems for some of you let me know. It is hard for me to make these calls. I just hate for guys to drive hours only to have to turn around a drive home in the rain.
For local DCers I think a good practice session is in order for Sunday if it is dry. Maybe we could skate Tim's spot.
