We have just received final permission to hold a race again in Tower Grove Park this year. The park has two events booked for Memorial Day weekend, our race and a kickball tournament. So as a side note know that the run out area will be cramped. Due to this a shorter course may be necessary for safety’s sake. As planned we will be having an open practice on the hill all afternoon on Saturday May 29th followed by a barbeque party Saturday night at the pavilion on the race site. The following day, which is Sunday the 30th, the hill will be closed for our racing pleasure. My apologies for such short notice, anyone who can squeeze a trip in for the race will be welcome. At this time there are no prize sponsors but I will see what I can do. Cash prize goes to the top 3 racers. Right now we are looking to hold another race on September 25th & 26th. All the parks roads are closed that time of year. That will enable us to run two separate races on two independent hills in the park, one on Saturday and a different one Sunday. I will be posting more info soon. 314.568.6711

I'm polling to see if racers would like to race at a new venue, Mammoth Lakes, California. It's a 5 hour drive from LA, 5 hours from San Francisco, and 2.5 hours from Reno airport. In the summer the weather tends to be sunny and cool at the 8000 foot elevation at the base of the ski area. The pavement is rather rough, but it's a huge parking lot with nice pitch, looking like an excellent location for a slalomcross. There's also another spot that has new pavement and could be good for tight slalom. The permit is cheap, so we should be able to have a very affordable race (and there's plenty of camping and off-season price lodging). Please email me if you think you might or might not go, I'd like to get an idea for how many racers to expect. This would be part of the California Championship series (expanding from WLAC).

We're having some trouble with getting WLAC set up for this season. Not only is there construction to deal with, but a higher bidder is waffling about what dates they want, leaving us in limbo. We may still get a May date on short notice, but more likely opening day will be postponed. I'll send out out the mass email as soon as I know more, which will have to be this week in order to start in May. Hope to see you there soon, Scott

DATE & TIME: Tuesday, May 11, 6:30 p.m. LOCATION: East Capitol Lawn - Meet in front of the Botanical Gardens PLAN: A group picture will be taken in front of the Capitol, and then we will all head over to the Hawk and Dove Restaurant (329 Pennslyvania Ave. SE, phone (202) 543-3300, METRO (subway stop): Capitol South Blue, Orange Lines).
Bring your boards, boats, kayaks, fishing rods, calculators or whatever for the group picture. If you cannot bring anything, there will be plenty of stuff laying around. Also, board storage will be available. For more information, http://www.surfrider.org/capitol/events.htm.

Are the above results the only people who took "declared" runs or the only ones who took declared runs and managed to finish the course, producing a time? At one point, I counted 30 people standing in line. While I'm not necessarily asking that we smack people by listing their name with a DQ or DNF beside it, the results you've shown really don't tell the whole story of last night's race. You produced a course that was absolutely a world class race course, and I think the list of names of those who couldn't complete it is pretty impressive itself. But even if we can't list the names of those who dared and failed completely, could you at least tell us how many skaters there are that raced, but are not shown on the result list?

From what people told me, they dug the course. The course turned out to be way fast and the tail wind gave you an extra push. It was really hard to conehead and communicate with Yvonne at the timer but I think we pulled it off. I just wanted to let everyone session and not worry about anything else. Vlad and Noah were clearly blazing the course ahead of everyone else. The Canadian contingent Claude and Civ were killing it and the Mighigan guys were ripping it up too. As usual, Floridas Mcree and Hollien were always a threat. I definately saw a few guys get faster since the last time I saw them. If you throw a night Outlaw race, bring walkie talkies.

Just want to clarify something on the children's book donation for T-shirt issue. It is now bring one new children's book to donate to our Rolling for Reading book bin and get an extra ticket to the raffle (really great stuff, and lots of it!!!).
Skaterbuilt just donated a killer big ol' deck (along with T-shirts) to add to the raffle loot. And Flowboard and Gravity are jumping in with free boards as well. Also new offerings from Juice mag (10 free subscriptions) and Concrete Wave magazine (4 subscriptions, hats, T-shirts). I only wish i didn't have to disqualify myself from winning any of it--especially the signed deck from Mike Vallely. :-)

Hi all,
Just a reminder that the Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama is Sunday May 9th at the Laguna Niguel skatepark in Orange County, Calif. The event is open to all skaters, though skateboarding moms are in the spotlight that day. You have to pay the regular park entry ($10/day or $30/year) but every participant gets a ticket to a VERY well-stocked raffle that includes signed decks from Mike Vallely and Steve Badillo, shoes from Van's and etnies, Pro Tec helmets, 10 subscriptions to Juice magazine, Harbinger safety equipment, women's clothing from Op and Moving Comfort, boards from Skaterbuilt, Flowlab, Cherry Skateboards and CORE Boardshop, gift certificates to area restaurants and more. Extra raffle tickets will be available for $2 and all proceeds go to charity.(Wahoo's Fish Tacos will provide free lunch vouchers and ice cream to all volunteers so let me know if you want to help that day.) Skaterade energy drink and Vitamin Water are providing refreshments for all skaters. Fuel TV says it is covering the event along with a bevy of local and regional media. This is also the kickoff to Rolling for Reading, a literacy campaign involving skateboarders and children's books. Bring one new children's book to donate to Rolling for Reading and receive a free Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama t-shirt. I will also be signing my book, Skateboard Mom, and donating my royalties to the Orange County Public Library. Please see www.skateboardmom.com for more details and updates. The event begins at 11 am on Mother's Day, Sunday May 9th!

Maria I was at the Luna slalom jam last year and shot picturesd with t-Max 400 before the sun went down this was fine as soon as it got dark though I could not get a satisfactory picture. I pushed the film to 1600 and this still was not enough. There was a some ditgital pictures that were taken too and they had problems with the reds and greens streaking. I think this has to do with the lights that Ricky was using. They were Hologen and they looked to be Tugstern balenced.

Maria, I'm really really stoked to have y'all. Thanks for coming.
The lighting is fine for racing but may offer a challenge to photograghers. I'm no photographer but the lighting kept us from getting a big spread in Concrete Wave last year. We just didn't end up with photos sharp enough to make the cut so it can be tricky.
With your experience, you should be fine.
