Vintage/Longboard Skateboard Day Indefinitely Postponed
On 10/30/2004 Surfirder Foundation Washington DC Capitol Chapter wrote in from United States  (69.143.nnn.nnn)

Hate to do this but I'm going to indefinitely postpone the Vintage & Longboard Skateboard Day at Potomac Mills Vans due to a combination of the pending happy event of an addition to my family and the fact that the Vans' corporate risk management people are struggling with the event. One of the hang-ups is insurance issues. Normally I would have the time to deal with the sticking point and get everything squared but my personal and professional life is leaving almost no extra time.

I hope I have not inconvenienced anybody with this late notice but I have not advertised or promoted the event this year.

More Garage Racing!

>> Roger wrote: What, no grabbing? Shoo, pushing people around is the best part of riding structures!

Hi Roger,

There's plenty of incidental contact in the corners as everyone slides around them. Hooked wheels, shoulders and elbows.

We try to resist just reaching out and grabbing the other rider and pulling past them slingshot-style. I know it's a big laugh, but when racing it's just not fair. But yeah! We're down for the type of incidental contact that happens in close-quarter racing.

There's also metal tubing handrail at every corner... you're gunning for the inside line, and that metal feature is *solid*... After you get it dialed in, you're just grazing the sucker entering and exiting every turn. I'm pretty sure if you make a direct hit, you're looking at some serious hurt. We've had crashes when someone realizes they're really gonna connect and they bail and take out the next rider back. It's a blast! Rollerball 2004...

Mark,

On your list of events, you have a race scheduled for "Tuesday" 11-22-04. Actually, 11-22-04 is a Monday. I'm watching a friends house for this week and I'm jealous of all the skate events I'm missing! I'll try and catch the later ones.

Maybe we can talk them into team racing too! Not sure if Chipman's going to be able to make it... Rooney my puss brother is pulling. So it might just be me and you Roger... I'll drive.

Bring a ditch board and some leathers... Dino point and area 51 will hopefully be on the agenda.

I'd like to leave saturday morning... will any of you nor cal boys be available early saturday afternoon for some skating and maybe some food?

I'm planning on doing this as a web covered road trip... without giving up any secret locations... so if pics are cool, then it should end up being a nice to view set of pages showcasing your style! I don't drink beer, but I should have lots of water and maybe even some of those fancy starbucks coffee's!

So who's available saturday the 6th? HR

What, no grabbing? Shoo, pushing people around is the best part of riding structures! And no bumps, you call that a garage? I guess I could bring up one of those knar bolt-on speed bumps and put in the middle of a turn; bring some socal to the norcal.

How about pushing and grabbing only in the straights?

Some beer runs too, each rider has to grab one on their way down and drink it before the last level - spill it and your dq, too slow and all the beers are gone, your dq too.

At least some switch stance runs!

Garage Info

I believe there are 6 to 8 rid able floors all left U turns, no speed bumps. And of coarse elevators.
Garage normally is not a bust but we have been ejected before. Sunday's are the mellowest, I have been going to this garage for over 7 years and for the most part it is not a bust, unless people are hitting it all the time, then they start checking the garage a bit more for sk8ers, then they just tell you to leave. We have not been sk8ing it for almost 6 month now, so it should be very mellow. I am going this Sunday to check things out; I will give you a exact number of floors and number of turns next week. I could accommodate a couple of folks at my chicks condo, I will see if any other Nor Cal sk8's can put some sk8ers up for the night. There are lots of places to sk8 around here, hills, area 51,Scottsvally park ect..... you can hit all of them not to mention Dinasore point is on the way 3mile 35-40 or faster if you draft. Usually a strong tail wind. Maybe we could hit it on Monday on your way back. It is right off of hiway 156 about 10miles after you get off hiway 5( coming from So cal) before Gilroy

hughR, the garage is all lefts, with straights between turns, elevator, no bumps, against traffic but you can hear/see oncoming car.
We could be kicked out any time, so it's a gamble.

If you are up here, let's go hit up some parks.

Salem down hill race
On 10/21/2004 sc wrote in from United States  (63.105.nnn.nnn)

Who cares about racing the clock? Down hill races never involve racing the clock unless its only for placement. Run the slalom race like a slalom race and the down hill race like a down hill race. The Exit skate classic tried this and it made the course way shorter than it needed to be because we couldt move the finish line further down. When you raced you had to be sure to get back to your side so you could go over the trip wire that was "in your lane". Down hill is a blast and it is so fun to compete and race dirrectly against other riders. 3 at a time would be perfect and if you get 3rd twice you are done for the day.

SALEM SLALOM ACORN RALLY BBQ- Hopefully Nov 7th, rainout date Nov 14th. Cones, comraderie, BBQ, Bring an extra BBQ and food and cones if you can or want to. This is a "bookend" season closing event to match our season opening event, and it'll be my birhday party also! Hopefully I'll get it on the contest calender forum. This is possibly the best surface to slalom on that the northwest currently has to offer, it's also very picturesque and shaded by BIG Oak trees that like to drop leaves, twigs and acorns so bring a broom and a leaf blower if you have one (we'll try to get at least one but bring 'em if 'ya got 'em. Go to Salem Oregon on I-5, go east on Hwy 22 which becomes mission street. Go 2.7 miles and look south/left to see Bush Park, look for the college sports/track stadium, the Soap Box Derby hill is right next to it. Park where you can, go up the hill and we'll have BBQ's set up midway.HELMETS ARE MANDATORY. Call Paul Howard at (541)754-7826 or email at bird041167@yahoo.com
