Wow! How exciting to find that there's an event happening in D.C.! Being in Gaithersburg, you can be sure I'll be there, although I may lack the necessary safety equipment to participate. Where on 15th St. will the race be held? In which block(s)? Any chance there could be some slalom activity on the side. I'll call the DC Downhill Club contact to explore this.
I'd like to offer one (extremely minor) correction to Bob Swartz' announcement of this event, and that is that there is NOT a pool at Lansdowne Skatepark, nor is Lansdowne Skatepark "on the way" from the airport to D.C. In fact, it's in the opposite direction, but still near enough to be accessible and fun enough to be worth a trip. It is a vintage-1977 concrete park with several large ditch-like runs, large banked turns, a banked freestyle area with a mogul and a large wide bowl. This park is very "surfable" and alot of fun on a longboard. If you want to skate a pool, the new VANS Park, in Woodbridge, VA has a very nice right-hand kidney, which you too can skate (along with the rest of the park) for $14 for a two-hour session.

JUst to inform the planet that the first giant free ride event took place last week end in PLEAUX (center of france), there will be a report soon on longskate.net with many pics. I remember you the concept, the sponsors are paying for everything, almost everybody can get good quality tee shirts, sweat shirts and other stuffs, there's no entry fees, the camping is totaly free, and the different brands of skateboards, like sector 9, supaflex, chronic crew etc... came with some of their best riders to take care about the beginners and help the riders, even people from the public came to try either streetluging or skateboarding. The best riders in luging & stand up made some demos in 4 men dual for the show. By night, some had an exciting ride under the full moon light. But it was the feast in the town as well and everybody had a great time b y drinking (sometimes too much) and having fun at differents parties. A great event you'll hear about soon, we just hope to see you there next year, maybe for 4 days of full ride, but we'll keep you informed .... Manu (longskate.net)

Hey guys! Well, it sounds like you had a ton of fun even without me! Too bad I couldn't come, there was no way for me to get down there. But believe me, I got on my knees and kissed plenty of butt trying! Oh well, next time. Please let me know about ANY other rides like this. In my town I am the downhill scene, so there is nobody else for me to ride with. I need to try and take any opportunity to ride anytime. Well, I'll catch you guys later! Keep it real!

Well boys, we pulled it off! I want to thank everybody for being so friendly and cool. We were able to borrow boards, share rides and stories, and no one to my knowledge got hurt badly. Gary "Lucky" Hardwick went down on a speedrun after hitting the only bump in the road during a draft and pass, but his shoulder will be as good as new soon. My only regret was that I didn't get a chance to meet everyone and try more equipment and get more video and pictures. That and we didn't do slalom. This means we get to do it again! Hugh R and his Flowlab were getting alot of attention. I missed my chance on the Freebord. Rob and the Sector 9 boyz were stylin'. Roger Jennings put up a nice little "camp" and helped my wife and daughter to have it made in the shade. Thank you. Mike, Mark, Rick, Jimmy, Gary, DT and I got in some good speedboard/drafting practice. Chris S. came up after a head bongo that left him not knowing what he was doing when he suffered the injury. Ouch. DT was teaching the slides (Hugh, you'll get it) I couldn't resist showing off a little of what's left of my glory days, thanks for putting up with me. I haven't skated in front of more than 4 interested people in about 19 years, it feels good. I'll post a few of the pictures I took (and maybe a video clip or two) on Longboarders.com (long overdue for an overhaul) in "all my spare time". I hope Paul Drucker snapped a few good'ens too. Anyway, I'm ramblin' now. I'm stoked about the turnout. So many times everyone says "I'll try and make it", this time everyone came through. I'm stoked. Let's do it again soon!

Not to sound like a broken record, but that was fun! The vibe was real cool with everybody letting everybody else check&try out all the different setups. Chaput smoking the the cigarette while doing a headstand had to been seen to believe. Personally I got a kick out of the FlowLab, thanks to HughR for bringing it. I did not find the hill that scary for bombing. Glen/Solidskate.com clocked me doing 40mph on 65mm wheels. I'm all stoked to put together a bombing board now and try to crack 50mph.
Thanks to everyone who let me try thier boards Cya Dave

I have a couple of pages of pix up... I hope to have a bunch more in a few days (I am going to receive a disk in the mail from Paul Drucker... the guy shooting stills with the tripod)
Chris's freestyling antics were amazing!
I think that the competitive venue for the future should include a "freestyle downhill" competition. Set up to score like ice skating. A short program with required skills and moves and a longer interpetive one set to music. All scored by a panel of judges (celebrity and otherwise).
Chris C, I will forward the disk on to you after I get some of the pix up on my site (I have this thing about being first!)
Chris S, How is the noodle? Ever figure out why you felt dazed?
All in all it was a great ride. I was very slow (barely broke 35)... couldn't learn to slide worth a poop... my 11 year old son was knocking them out one after another on his first day ever! Oh to be young and cooridinated again... alas... HR

Great turnout of riders from kids to pro downhillers and everything in between. Chaput blew everyone away with his old school freestyles moves adapted to longboard - very longboard (surfboard) style. Still would like to see an area set up for some giant slalom - maybe 20-30 cones at the top, with a bomb ending - but those speedboarders might not like having to dodge our cones at 50mph. All in all another really good day.

hey a big thanks to all the riders who came out, we had over 30 riders and we all had a blast!
There were a lot of different set ups from homemade skateboards, old vintage boards, speedboards, buttboards, streetluges, a freeboard, and a flowlab. Chris Chaput put on an amazing freestyle show for everyone, consisting of a wide varity of headstands, slides, footwork, and wheelies. Team TVS was there with Gary Hardwick, Rick Kludy, Mark Golter, Jimmy Flintd, and myself. Richard Landingham came and busted out the street skis. Mike Franco of Powerhouse roadboards came down from Pasadena, along with his big mouth. this guy can always make you laugh. Hugh and his family came down from lancaster and brought all his toys. Chris S from Nosewheelie came but had to leave a little early due to a small kine accident. the s9 guys came out and this dude named Victor came, this guy is old school. he is probally in his mid 60s and charges, he's all tatted up, has this big ol white beard and charges like a grom does on christmas morning. A big thanks to Paul from MSA who brought a harness system so he could hang out of a mini van and take photos.
i'm sure there will be a lot of pics and storys so if i left anything out....
keep your eyes on this page in the future for further dates. Mahalo. D.T.

Hamm,
Ask DT about carvers and speedboarders on the road at the same time. Mark Golter and I were "sure" that DT would hear us descending upon him and would stay wide right. He didn't. He lay down a beautiful backside carve right in front of us, Mark went right and I went left, lefter, leftest and barely missed him before hooking back up with Mark and drafting him to the bottom. It's always a good idea to bring an extra pair of shorts ;)
A pace vehicle tapping its horn may help the bombers from becoming bummers.

Hey Chris S.
My skill level has not improved since last time we rode, so you don't have to worry about being the only slow guy out there!
I will be bringing the flowlab board and if the UPS driver still loves me I should have a Landyahtz DH board to run too (my fingers have been crossed for a few days)
I too will begin packing soon, maybe even today... this time I will bring a cooler with water and snacks (I get hungry)
It is nice to hear that Chris C. is older than I am too... don't know why... but it is... see you guys there... HR
