So we will hold the event in the Boston Common in Boston MASS. On Saturday Sept 30 and Sunday Oct 1.
We will have straight slalom and Giant Slalom. There will be time to practice prior to the race and test the surface.
Our interest here is to agree on a format that most are happy with. We hope this to become the seed for many future slalom races on the East Coast.
Other events will have more advance notice our interest is to make this event run smoothly and to bring together racer input for future races.
My e-mail is Johngilmour@rocketmail.com
Meeting times and places will be posted shortly for the pre-race meeting and the racing timetable. There will also be a mandatory post race meeting to discuss how the event went and what changes should be considered for future events.

I think Robin has a very interesting idea for the Discovery Channel... film of skating on the various uphill downhills. Theres one in an old cemetary in the SFV. Its been a few years, but as I remember it is nearly a half mile long... HR

Perhaps Robin thought we were kidding, and doesn't understand that some of us mystical, old-men of the sport have the ability to make our boards go uphill, while keeping all four wheels on the ground and both feet on top of the deck. ;-) Fun story, though. I think I'll check it out when I'm in Prestwick. Perhaps Robin also doesn't understand that Prestwick, Scotland (aka Nowheresville) is very well known to millions of golfers and WW2 aviation buffs, worldwide.

your idea isnt that out there, earlier this summer I got a little excited about going to Scotland to see my Grandad in Prestwick ( a small oap nowheresville ). What i got excited about was remembering a few years ago being taken to this hill in the car which was an optical illusion, basicly what appears to be uphill is actually downhill due to the surrounding countryside, (it also overlooks the sea) . Basicly you look `downhill' pull off the hand break and start rollin `uphill', yes I know this isnt being explained very well. So I decide to take my 5 foot still stoked board to conquer this beast called THE ELECTRIC BRAE i did so, but unfortunately as much as it did really mess with my head it wasnt much of a hill and the road gradient wasnt to friendly, but anyway I'm told theres another somewhere , possibly Egypt maybe thats more interesting, er well I bet that was a waste of your time , but can I be a pioneer or something for my efforts in exploration?! no didnt think so.

If we do the same little rain dance that we did in Seattle (where the forecast was ever more grim) there's a good chance that the Weather Gods will cooperate.
The "official" website for the Barrett Junction Event is now http://www.SkateRelated.com and it provides some information about the many Skate Related races to be held. I hope to see you there too!

Sign me up for the Standup, Streetluge, Buttboard and possibly the Inline. I think this will be an awesome event and thank you in advance for all the hard work that I know it is taking you to put something like this together. If you need a "home" for publishing the race details on the web, I will gladly loan the "SkateRelated.com" domain to support the race, as you are obviously supporting skate related activities as well as skateboarding. It's all good!

The second Barrett Junction Grand Prix will be held in Barrett Junction, California, on October 7-8. There will be street luge, buttboard, skateboard, all terrain board, gravity bike, and inline downhill racing. Practice and qualifiers will be on Saturday, with racing on Sunday. The entry fee is $20 per event. Registration will be Saturday 8:30 to 10:00. Advanced registration packets will be mailed to all competitors from the first race, and others may request packets from the organizer. Late entries are OK all weekend.
Winners will receive prize money, plaques, and goodies provided by the sponsors. Please show your appreciation to the sponsors: Planet X (TV coverage) Gullwing skateboard trucks (www.gullwingtrucks.com) Mongoose All Terrain Boards (www.mongooseatb.com) Bones Bearings, Valley Fitness of El Cajon, Hole in the Wall Pizza, Barrett Cafe, Barona Casino, Viejas Casino, East County Skate Supply
The course will be only partially lined with hay bales, it will be more of a ride at your own risk race than some races are. The course is 1.5 miles with lots of corners, two tight turns that require braking, speeds over 60 mph for luge (40 mph for standup), with good runout. It will be a fully closed course.
Leathers are required for luge and highly recommended for everyone. Pads and overall abrasion protection are required for anyone not wearing leathers. Additionally, inline racers not wearing leathers must wear multiple layered padded hip protection. Technical inspection of protective gear and equipment will be required to insure that equipment is safe and protective gear is adequate. IGSA rules will generally be used. For more details see: http://www.geocities.com/ozmans_streetluge/IGSA.html
The location is Barrett Smith Road in Barrett Junction, California, which is about 40 minutes east of San Diego, near the Mexican border. Take San Diego Highway 94 east 30 minutes from San Diego to Rancho San Diego, where you'll see a TGIFridays. Turn right to stay on 94. Continue to Barrett Junction, cross the bridge, Barrett Smith Road is on the left (it's the second intersection with that road). It's past Barrett Lake Road, and before Portero and Tecate.
There is camping available in Barrett Junction, and motels in Rancho San Diego and Tecate (4 miles away). The Waterhouse family will host a BBQ on Saturday night. More details are available in the race packet.
This will be a great chance for inexperienced racers to get a taste of competition, as well as an excellent race for experienced riders. Plus it's sure to be a lot of fun. See you there!

People will be there in/on fast toys burning up the road. GO TO DC. Get up, show up, go down, talk about it for years to come. GO TO DC! By the way, Tom Mason has informed me that we are running the Red Bull race up here, RAIN or SHINE. Good thing I brought my slide gloves because Cherry Bombs are NOT the rain tire of choice...

Hey all,
Mike Brooke, the original Skategeezer, author of The Concrete Wave, Editor International Longboarder, is coming into San Diego today for ASR this weekend. He wants to try to squeeze as much skating in as he can in the few days he's here. We're thinking maybe Temecula tonight, then sometime OB skatepark, maybe a Mission Beach/Pacific Beach Boardwalk cruise, and hopefully an early morning session at the dump road on Sunday. If you're interested, post here or email me. If you email, cc my work email, csturhann@acad.com, because I may not get my home email until late tonight.
Let me know if you're interested.

One thing I forgot to add.. Several Of the road surfaces would not be good to ride on. They were rough even on bicycle tires (Nebraska was the worst). If you weren't on pneumatic tires, you probably would rattle all the teeth out of your head. 78a just wouldn't cut it for several chunks of road.

>What would be the best time of year to skateboard across >America? I did it on bicycle after I got out of the Air Force. Started on August 1st and ended October 1st. Good time of year I think. It took me 45 days riding time averageing 75 miles a day and 16 miles an hour. Total distance from Newport, Oregon to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina was 3450 miles. I was supported by my family (wife, son, dog and cat) in a motorhome as far as Iowa (where I am from). The rest of the trip was solo unsupported using tent/sleeping bag.
As far as motorhoming goes, on that trip, we stayed overnight in parkinglots frequently. That seemed to work pretty good.
You are one ambitious dude!

What would be the best time of year to skateboard across America? Assume my family is driving behind me in a nice comfy motorhome and doesn't want to get rained or snowed upon. I still think several sponsors pledging $1 per mile could more than pay for gas. How far is it from NYC to The Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. How long does it take a cyclist to do it? Where do I find a good chiropractor?

This is VERY advanced notice, but I am planning an event, in the late-spring of next year, where the primary focus will be slalom. I mention this NOW, because the venue for the race is a picnic area, in a state park, which includes a single (controlled) access, looped road. We'll have the whole picnic area and control of the road. With the longest downhill stretch being (maybe) 450 yards long, it's really not a venue for a true downhill, but all these other "odd" event suggestions (cross-country, hillclimb, etc.) could be experimented with at that time.

I've alway wanted to see, or do, pure distance/time pumping (after START, feet don't touch the ground) events on a flat (or relatively flat) loop or oval course. Ever the anti-hype, purist type (laughing yet, Chris?), I always figured it to be like Olympic track distances, i.e. 100 meter, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, etc. We had an asphalt oval where I went to Jr. High School, and I could pump laps on it, indefinitely. The "pacing yourself for the distance" component would be very similar, mentally to footracing, or speedskating (ice). Of course, I love pure competition and regard the question of "televisability" as somewhat of a curse. In that regard, I also LOVE the pure Hillclimb suggestion, rogerj.

A few weeks ago at the Japan X-Games, team Exkate put on a demo that will most likly be brought back. They raced electric skateboards and electric luges around a windy track that circled the vert, street, motocross, and rock climbing, etc, venues. They raced 2 laps per heat (though that was kind of short) and had a great time.

Weird Idea - "hill climb"

How about a uphill race for distance. Start on a small decline or ramp to get a starting speed and climb up a hill with an increasing slope. No pushing, when you foot touches ground run is over and distance is marked. No cones, no timing, just simple chalk marks (distances). A sporting blend of technique and stamina.

I think it's a great idea. A shorter looping course that requires you to navigate slalom cones on the first pass and bomb it on the second could also work. Drafting would be tough with staggered start times, and cones would be tough with the same start time (the first guy plinks it..) but maybe haybales instead of cones could work. The details could be worked out, and a great race venue and/or fun skate could result. Make it a fundraiser for a local charity and get a city government to close some roads. You never know. The flat and uphill pushing would be killer. Using both legs would be a must for a marathon, but not a 10K. The hardest part about using both legs is the transfer of one planted foot to the other. Many tiny little ankle adjustments are made to squirm your foot back into the center after an imperfect plant. A longboard can be pretty forgiving here, but heavy for the long haul. Keep up the wierd ideas. Back in 1974 I had this wierd idea that a skateboard didn't have to look like a surfboard and that a round nose/square tail board would work better for your feet. A lot of people said that my boards were ugly and that they wouldn't sell as well as the spears (they were right) but I was too damn busy winning world championships on them to care! Don't be afraid to put your ideas out there. Genius is often found while brainstorming or by accident. Either way, it is still genius. Todcar, you may just be ahead of our time!
