James the III,bring washable street chalk! I use this to mark off my slalom courses, and I also have used it learn what my stopping distances were for foot-drag stops. Those uses aside, whatever course you wish to draw can be had.Create a "slide-zone" with starting line, arc, and slide areas all mapped out,or a race circuit(flattrack oval?),or whatever. Also, consider portable mini or kickturn ramps. 1/4 pipe or flat launch ramps can be used to create banks for a race(slalom, even!) or the more traditional streetcourse..

I have the lot for 2 days and the event will be on the flats of the lot. How do I make it fun...high jump...barrel jump...boarderdcross? This lot is flat and I want to put on a show and draw out the couch pots...any pointers? We sell all kinds of longboards and I race, mix it up and it could be fun with the right ideas. Give me some info on empty lot rac'n and what events we can put on? Oh DC downhill guys thank you, 3what a blast I had bombing the local stuff...you guys have it made when it comes to city knowledge. More to come and thanx again for the DC downhill!

Anybody doing the West LA College thing this weekend? I know that Chapet's going, but what about everyone else? Hugh, Todcar, Glen, Hamm, Roger, DT, Paul, the Carrascos, Looney, and anybody else I'm forgetting? Bueller? Bueller? I just don't know if I'm up for the drive if there isn't going to be a decent turnout.

The event locale will be announced shortly as the Boston Commons is currently under construction. The laying of underground conduit has scarred ALL of the smoothly paved pathways. The Boston Common will not be used.

Hamm/Dave, Practice/Fun runs. Look about 5 posts down for the schedule. My toe is good enough to skate on, but not good enough for soccer (my normal Sunday morning), so I will be getting in as much slalom practice as I can now. An interesting concept has been born in the Slalom forum. A "Virtual Slalom Competition" where each skater, on the honor system, sets up a slalom course with predefined specifications and then times himself taking runs and submits his best for placement along with the other particpating rider's. A straight flat course of 25 cones set 2 meters (6' 7") apart on center, with a 5 meter distance before the first and after the last of the cones. Until a "real" slalom race can be organized, this will be a fun way to get an idea about how fast everyone is. I'll be putting a page out there soon with some diagrams.

Westwood Ski and Sports Club is pleased to announce our Fall racing calendar for practices and races at West LA College. Inline skaters, rollerskaters, skateboarders, classic skaters (buttboarders), gravity bikers, and scooter riders of all ages and ability levels are invited.
IGSA (International Gravity Sports Association), the organizer of the ESPN X Games street luge races, will be sanctioning the races this year. This will bring a new level of exposure, organization, and sponsorship to the racing.
All dates include practice for everyone, and the events on October 15, 29, and November 19 (inside campus) include the races listed in the calendar below. We will be using A Street (the main hill), B Street (the gentle one), and C Street (the steep one), with racing on one or more streets and practice on the remaining ones. Entry fees for races will be $25, and practice will be $10 ($8 for club members) for those not racing. Race awards will be plentiful, including cash, Bones Bearings, autographed Darren Lott Streetluge Survival Guides, and much more to be announced.
All events start on Sunday at 10:30, with practice runs first, and go to the mid-afternoon. Helmets and pads or leathers are required, and minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Joining Westwood Ski and Sports Club is encouraged, and entitles you to participate in ski and snowboard races and trips, water ski trips, parties, and much more.

Fastest Recorded speed in the 10ft speed trap was in the final for first and second place goes to Reed Lowery at 39.827 mph. Not a world record, but fast for this road.
The race finish order interestingly follows the time trial results order, except Rick Kludy’s blazing fast time that must have wore him out for the race.
Average age of this events competitor was 35

The race is now in the books. Everyone had a great time, no one got hurt. That is win-win racing. I want to make it very clear that Rick Kludy was kicking some major butt up there on the hill and had all of the riders scared to death, especially me. His qualifying time was between two to three seconds faster than the others (on a short course) and he appeared unstoppable. When I found out that I had to race him in the semifinals, I was seriously bummed. His starts had been lightning fast all day and mine had been pretty weak because I was pushing off with my opposite (right) foot due to a left big toe injury sustained during the Seattle race. I knew the only chance I had to win was to switch back to my normal push foot and suck up all the pain. He pushed me to the limits of my ability. He forced me to dig deeper than I've ever had to. He brought out the best in me. He's a great racer, a great sport, and I know we meet again soon. Reed Lowry had narrowly edged out Mark Golter in the semis which I thought at the time, was doing me a favor. Mark had already beaten me in the finals up in Mammoth earlier this year. Reed had also qualified faster than me and when I met him in the finals and I knew I was going to have to get another good start to stay with him. Our starts were nearly identical and then he started to take a brilliant line that forced me to either take the left lane of the road, or jump in behind him. I had beed seriously afraid of taking the left lane all day because of the minefield of water, cracks, chunks and manhole covers, and chose to dive in a try a pass instead. His line was so perfect in closing me out that I literally had to sit back and watch him take gold. It was intelligent and well executed and he deserved the victory. He is a gracious winner, a nice guy, and I couldn't be happier for him. Mike High (who also raced well that day) was responsible for making the trophies and Reed's Gold one was the icing on the cake (Reed didn't seem to mind the $500 cash prize either). Anthony (Tony) Smallwood is to be congratulated for putting together a great race and for racing well too. Bob and Scooter Swartz did a fantastic job of running all the races and setting up all of the timing systems and the PA system and announcing and providing Red Bull and water and putting together a staff to keep the roads clear and safe (this was not an easy task). They even got to throw in a few streetluge runs as an exhibition which the crowd seemed to love. All of the DC locals were great. My personal thanks to Andy "GBJ" Bittner for the great hospitality, airport runs and photography and friendship. He put me up in his remarkable "skateboard museum". I can't wait to see what comes out of the photlab. If the locals will have us, I know all the "California Boyz" will come back next year. We know the DC Boyz will be gunnin' for us. The nice thing about me getting second place in every race that I've ever entered is, I still have room for improvement. The bad thing is that in the meantime, I may end up having to endure a Dr. Evil nickname like "number two" ;)
DC Downhill Results:
1. Reed Lowry 2. Chris Chaput 3. Mark Golter 4. Rick Kludy

Bravo!! Congratulations to Reed Lowery, Chris Chaput and Mark Goulter for an exciting and highly entertaining race. Although I didn't participate (this year...), I'm a D.C. native and know the hill and the city well. Pulling off this event, so favorably, was a significant accomplishment, and drew very positive attention to the sport. So, congratulations must go to Tony Smallwood, Bob Swartz and all the others that made this happen. Hopefully this'll lay the groundwork for you guys to draw more attention to the event next year. One more time..., congratulations!!!
