Carrasco's Backyard Skatepark

I really can't tell you how influential your backyard skatepark was to me. First off that issue of WWS was the first skatemag I ever owned, a guy named Frank Thrasher (how ironic) in 1977 gave that issue in Science class in the 7th grade. Reading about backyard ramps led me to build a pingpong table ramp in my basement which led to 2 quater pipes in my driveway and eventually to one of the 1st halfpipe in St. Louis. Also reading about how practically your whole family skated was simpling amazing. It's great to see you guys are still at it. I've raced slalom with your brother Richey often and it would be cool if you would make it to a slalom race near the midwest too.

Thanks for mentioning that you read that article
about the Carrasco Bros. Backyard Skatepark in
Wild World of Skateboarding Magazine.
At that time, my brother David and Bill Mooney
built ramps and we kept adding them to our backyard
until it turned out to become A BACKYARD SKATEPARK !
We lived a block away from THE FRUIT BOWL POOL -
in Garden Grove, Ca. , and alot of times skaters would
get kicked out of "Greenbrier" - - I mean "FRUITBOWL"
( Skateboarder Magazine showed up at the Greenbrier Inn -
& took photo's there - and re-named it "FRUIT BOWL" ) .....
...anyway....and so a bunch of people would pile over
to our house and ride the Carrasco Backyard SkatePark !
We would have a line of skaters jutting out of our
gate into the dirt road next to our house all waiting
in line to take a run at all the ramps !
I'm trying to remember.....
some of the cats who rode our ramps -
George Orton, Bobby Valdez, Steve Shipp, Darrel Miller,
let's see....I can't remember all of them...
- that was over 30 years ago !
Regarding Carlsbad Skatepark...
Here's the oldest photo of Carrasco Brothers @ Carlsbad Skatepark.

the parks I am looking for are going to be pre mar 76 (carlsbad opening).
Tomoka was early, but It came after SkatBoard City for sure. I loved seeing TOmoka photos in the old flip waverider/skaterider magazines.
Concrete Wave was later too. late 76 or early 77
the Frederick Bowl appears to be in 75. Escape Country was in 75.
Wasn't the original Ocean Bowl made in Asphalt, or was that another park in the dc/coast area.

Oldest park? First one that comes to mind is the Concrete Wave in Anaheim. That park was a blast. Really enjoyed skating with Greg weaver everyday.

While I'm not certain which was the very first skatepark, I can tell you that the first public or municipally funded skatepark in the world was The Ocean Bowl, in Ocean City MD. Built in the summer of '76, The Ocean Bowl was built by the City of Ocean City, Maryland, and was the result of an organizing effort by skater-mom "Haystacks" Marlowe (mother of Josh Marlowe). Thirty-one years later, after going through many different designs and configurations, The Ocean Bowl is still in business.

How about Tomoka Moon Forest in Florida?
I was just reading about the Tomoka Moon Forest skatepark in one of my old issues of Wild World of Skatebaording. There was also a article about the Carrasco's backyard skatepark in the same issue. Living in the midwest that article was the biggest inspiration for me.

I would really like to see some years matched up to these parks. Maybe I am the only one in the dark, but I have long since though Carlsbad to be the first park. I have known about Frederick, ever since I got my first skateboarding book in 76/77. However, it was not until recently that I started to put together more of history that I started finding all sorts of neat things.
the neatest thing, is that I actually think some of the Frederick park may be in tact. Satellit images definitely indicate something is there.
It is possible that the park was so mellow, that it was easily eclipsed even as early as 76 and basically forgotten. If someone in the SC area could verify, and if portions are still there, I would like to see some quick photos.
Carlsbad and Skatboard City (FL) are usually classified as the first parks in the USA, both completed and operated in early/mid 76. the only problem is, these other parks were opened earlier. Granted the level of terrain was far different, but the Frederick and Escape Country may have that being rethought.

i think i remember the first skatepark being in florida, that one where all the early bruce walker pics came from,sensation basin? melbourne fla?,maybe myrtle beach. japan had something real early too.

Hey guys, I have a question. I have always thought that Carlsbad was the first park. Where did the Frederick bowl fit in? was it after Carlsbad or before. Looking at boards being ridden at frederick (old photos), it appears that it may pre-date Carlsbad.
Any of you guys have a good info on this.

I saw your picture of a 2-board Handstand and it reminded me of something Kenny and I used to try: 3-board, 2 man Handstands!! It was difficult because I was Goofy and he was Regular so we would start on either side of the boards.
Did you ever try this one?

thanks for the props. yeah, I really do not understand the haters. I give street skaters their due props, and they just hate and gossip in return. I have decided its because most of them are using drugs, and its not an understatement--that is most of the ones I have had the misfortune to come into contact with.
you are correct it did not end well. nearly needed to amputate my leg because of mrsa after 1st knee surgery. I will release the crash only after I can afford a documentary type discussion which shows the speed and the law of physics with a 200 pound man going 30 mph down a 15 degree to 20 degree and more slope. (that hill drops like a mutherf#@!err, like a wicked hangmans noose. most skaters will not even try it on their feet. take care!!!

Some related things I have experienced: Several times after kids have made positive comments about my handstands, Berts or 360's -- an older teenager or guy in his twenties then 'educates' the kids that "those tricks are so old ( or lame or insert derogatory comment), they are not cool." Sometimes the kids buy into the hater's opinion, other times they disagree.
Also, there are older skaters influenced by the Del Mar contest scenes in the Dogtown and Z Boys video who are VERY judgemental about handstands. Especially some dudes on the BDS forum. Ironic that they waste so much energy hating freestyle, then complain about skaters who do not respect them because they cannot ollie or kick flip! Some of the older skaters are stoked to see long handstands (especially with hands pumping for distance) in person, but will not admit it in front of the opinionated dudes.
Videos of handstands are Berts are prominently featured on my 45 at 45 Tour site. I REFUSE TO BEND TO THE WILL OF THE HATERS!

Hows it going? Do you still skate? There are a bunch of Brit skaters who still remember those Benjyboard days hanging out on the UK forum. One of the guys just had a slalom board made that is reminiscent of the old Sablosky bowlriding deck!
Once I skated with Jules Gayton and Marc Sinclair in London, said goodbye, went on holiday to Antwerp, Belgium, skated with my friends there only to be taken as a surprise to see a visiting British Skate Team demo....The Benjyboard Team!
We mostly skate slalom and bowls, one crew based around Hyde Park, one in Hove.

I've seen some of his runs on youtube. He has some pretty long and fast stuff going on. That run down that big hill didn't seem to end very well for him.
Wobbles at speed on your hands are a lot scarier then when your on your feet. Needless to say they are much harder to controland even getting off safely is a tough one. His fall sounds pretty harsh.
It is pretty typical to read some of the jabs at him by kids that just have not learnt respect for people honed skills and such. Some people learn to appreciate in time and other just never will.
You don't have to like it to apreciate it.

ever do any demo's in new jersey? i rode a plexiglass pepsi ramp sans flatbottom,some time in 78 or so,i was on moped at the time,wait it may have been earlier it could have been on bicycle, i remember hearing a rumour about the location of the ramp it was at a company picnic for subsidiary of pepsi maybe something like their legal department,or a company that did their ads,something like that. Anyway i found the ramp,told no go on riding it,the guys skating it will be here at 11,came back at 11, no skaters, went back home hung out for lunch, grabbed board and all safty gear back to ramp,still no skaters,hung out for a couple hours,no skaters. I think the picnic was clearing out ,and i got the go ahead and take a spin. Plexy took a bit of getting used to but i got near the top and the guys there were a bit surprized that a local jersey kid could even do this skateboard thing. I wonder who were the national names or east coast pepsi locals that were supposed to skate that day and blew it off. It's one of my many obscure skate spot memorys,like finding old school ramps when they were no longer ridable,bizarre tight backyard pools(one indoor)early dh no slider gloves ancient equipment, impending wobbles with no (easy) bailout,oh well todays seventies flashback

If you look at my hands in the photo -
my left hand is just off to the front of that back truck,
and my right hand is a little off to the right of that front truck.
I was trying to get my hands as close together as I possibly could
to perform this trick.
Could you imagine trying to do this trick - if your hands were
in the middle of each board - HoW WiDE ThaT WouLD Be ? .....Ouch.
-It would be an upside down spread-eagle. Yikes.
Ya know, back then, I had a jillion companies always giving me all
kinds of equipment to try out - because I was performing skate
demos 7 days a week for about 5 years & competing too !
( -Pepsi, and other skate teams... )
So.....I've studied this photo, -regarding THAT WHEEL -
and figured I was probably using
a different bushing set-up - maybe kind of snug -
where by tilting the front of the board -for ADJUSTING BALANCE -
it could bring up the back wheel momentarily.
When I used mouse boards -
I could actually pump the boards - kinda like slalom -
and get those things haulin'....to keep moving.
What ever way you lean - those boards were SO SMALL -
you could make them turn instantly - into where you're going.

I can still gyrate the back board - mouse board,
to make both boards keep moving -when the first board
is a regular skateboard too.

looked harder to do.

Rene -- with your hand position on the rear deck, and the right rear wheel being off the ground, it looks like it could go into a "wheelie" and shoot the board out! Did that happen to you much?
Bailing onto my hands or scraping my fist after popping a wheelie from handstand to fakies has messed up my knuckles!
Wow- Mrs. Carrasco had 15 children? Great that she went back to college! Some people might need to visit a psychologist after raising that many kids. :-))
