Russ Howell, Ed Nadalin, and my brother Karl hung out together at Ed's pad in Huntington Beach
it was raining that day and I tagged along with my brother Karl
I stood on Ed's board and that's where I first did a grilla grip
started jumping over evrything
I used to trip on how high Skitch jumped

Locating former skateboarder & skate shop owner
On 3/26/2007 Arthur wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Hi I'm trying to locate any info out there on a skateboarder named Allan F. Houck who owned 'Daytona Street Skates' in Daytona Beach, Fl in the late 70s and opened the 'Moon Forest Skateboard Park' in Ormond Beach in 1980. His partner Ed Baxter was also a skateboarder and won three titles during that time period. Thanks!

hello!

i'm still standin' and willing to chip in .02 here and there.

ok this is an old pic but it lends a hand to the fictional story. those guys were epic but no more a sensation than howell, ty page, logan gang, and the list goes on. Thatz howz I seez it! I could ramble on about the old days but I'll save that for another post :)

lookin back at those magical times, we were truly setting the stage to today's industry. these are golden times too! i'm thrilled at all the longboarders everywhere!!!! still gyrating down the sidewalks and racing here and there.

Anaheim 1965

Okay, Cliff... Would John Freis for overall and Torger Johnson for Freestyle be the correct answer?

By the way, I have found a Skitch Hitchcock interview in the Feb 79 issue of Skateboarder. The intro by Benito Schwartz says SH popularized the Gorilla Grip in Spring 75, at Del Mar. He also nearly got eliminated because he used it to go up and down the platform.

Torture me with more questions.

Craig,

Go back 10 years before the Del Mar Contest. See if you can tell me who won the overall and who placed 1st in Freestyle at Anahiem, 5/22&23/65? More questions if you can answer these.

I would pose the Gorrilla Grip question to Steve Cathey. He was one of the first I ever saw doing it.

Question # 2 would be good for Russ Howell or Chris Yandall, they were both on the podium with her.

"La Grippe" & Del Mar
On 3/22/2007 Craig B. Snyder wrote in from United States  (66.32.nnn.nnn)

Hello All,

Two questions:

1. GORILLA GRIP: What do members here know about the origins of this move? And was there one specific originator?

2. DEL MAR 1975: I just had to remind a woman working on a children's book which has a chapter on skateboarding that the first place winners at Del Mar were NOT the Z-Boys. The overall winner was a GIRL! Does anybody have more info who Michelle Brunot was?

thanks,
Craig

Here's the plug for my new book. Will be a good one. Take care guys.

the hitch... and the rich
On 3/15/2007 shapeshifter wrote in from United States  (24.148.nnn.nnn)

this one measures 27", they came in solid colors of blue or black from what i've seen. i had a couple exactly like this black one in 1975 also had a few of blue ones of the same size later on. the first skitch hitchcock deck i owned back around 1974 was the 30" with a red and yellow resin swirl. i saw one just like it at moro bay, which belonged to richy carrasco.

though i'm not a collector, i was considering not riding the one i just got because it is in pristine condition. after hearing the news i've had a change of heart and believe that this one should be ridden with care and enjoyed to honor the man and his craft.

Got excitied, I will be there but riding is another matter. 50 years on this planet doing what he does on a skateboard all these years on that hill for his b-day is worth the price of travel. I have been there and the place is unlike any place in the world. There is a reason why its there, (SOUTH OF THE BORDER BABY)TO MUCH ON MY PLATE TO RIDE BUT TO PARTY WITH THE MAN,HELL YES!

Real winners
On 3/11/2007 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (69.181.nnn.nnn)

I once posted in the "Lords of Dogtown" page about taking the movie as just that a movie and not an hisstorical account. I reminded the readers that the actual winner of the 75 Del Mar Freestyle was not Stacy as depicted in the movie. Does this matter? It did to one Flurette Picciolo! Her dad, Steve Picciolo was the true winner of the Del Mar Freestyle and his daughter was glad to see that someone new about this actual history and cared. She cared and that was enough for me.

When her dad was about eight, Karl Weber and I used to visit the Picciolos and skate with his older brother Chris, who was on the Southern Hobie Team in Clay Wheel days. We skated all of the hot spots, Belagio, Kenter, Paul Revere and others. The Z-boys were about 5 years old or younger. The area, later called Dogtown was ruled by the Hobie Team skaters before it was named Dogtown and became the home of the Z-boys.

Steve was an original, and that is true history!

Cliff Coleman
