IN REGARDS TO YOUR QUESTION ABOUT REPUBLISHING THE OLD ISSUES OF SKATEBOARDER & ACTION SPORTS. I FOUND OUT THAT THE MAGS FROM 97'BACK ARE JUST ON HARD COPY ONLY AND THE MAGS FROM 98'FORWARD ARE ON DISK. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WOULD BE PROFITABLE FOR THE PUBLISHERS TO REPRINT ANY OF THOSE. THE MAGS I HAVE I ARE PRICELESS TO ME, SO IF YOU HAVE ANY HOLD ON TO THEM. PEACE OUT , DSHUFLY

It would be great if someone could re issue all the old Skateboarder and Action Now magazines. Wonder if that could be possible?

Steve,
I just emailed you the scan. Let me know if you don't get it. Someone has a video of the race. I saw it at Novak’s house that night. I remember I had crashed and slid 25 feet down the double yellow it saved my skin well at least some of it. I had a mild concussion but kept skating. I cried when I saw the footage. It looked so bad and everyone went augh!!! all of a sudden I felt every scrape and bruise.
Take care,
Happy 50 th! this year.

Judy , that was a great event!
Can you send me any scanned images of me from Pop's negatives? I would appreciate it.
I remember driving up the coast w/Dave D. and Lance S. of Tracker just in front of a gnarly south swell. It sucked cuz everytime we stopped to surf it would be small and grow to overhead in a matter of an hour, then we would start driving again. Park, small surf then big surf again, it was making me crazy but we had to get to the race! Surfing from HB to County Line to Jalama to Capitola.
That race is where I started to get racers to wear speedsuits. My mom made me a custom 4way stretch suit (the one in the photo), I looked like Spiderman, everyone was in a panic cuz the suit was so aero, racers started wearing their wetsuits, it was hilarious! It's been so long ago I can't even remember how I finished because the trip was so much fun!
History is great and having many fanastic memories and friends to look back on is a dream come true! I'm turning 50 this year it's been a hell of a ride and looking foward to some more great adventures!

Cat -
The people I had on my wall, as I was growing up were Bobby Rydell, Muhammed Ali, Chuck Norris, The Beach Boys, and for many years I had photo's of Yokohama Bay, Hawaii... from the 1960'S.
I can't believe I never went to Hawaii until 1996 - and when I was there - wouldn't you know it - - - of all the surf spots my brothers and I went to - my favorite surf spot was Yokohama Bay ! ( -Makaha a close second ! )
Below: 1996 - I took this photo of my brother Randy Carrasco surfing Yokohama Bay, Hawaii.
I've never met you Cat - -but maybe I'll see ya @ the 2007 La Costa Open/Encinitas Open/San Diego Open.... whatever they will name it this year !
THE LCB ~ ~ ~ real good people !
Take care,

a quick glance through my old mags and i got a couple of fav's,an obscure "who's hot" dave bently, looks to have some pretty good height in his gorilla grip air, i think the best pic of a gorilla grip may have been skitch hitchcock in the hobie sundancer ad, the texan was in a donel distribution ad with no name credit,he had other pics i think, there's my trivia question.i don't know the answer, yet.

Rene,
I love seeing all your pics about history in Skateboarding! Even though I skated in the summertime, I never read skateboard mags back then, only ski.
My heroes in the 60's & 70's were Spider Sabich, Jean-Claude Killy, Suzy "Chapstick" Chaffee, Stein Eriksen. These are the people I had on my wall!
Keep em' coming!!!!

Speakin' of Gorilla Grip, or Toe Grippers back in 1970's...
-let's not forget Steve Shipp,
and that kid - David Carrasco.
David Carrasco - Carlsbad Hills...mid 1970'S.
When I met Gordy Linneman back in 1976 on location during the shooting of the movie 'SKATEBOARD' -
-he was doing some cool stuff barefooted - on his tiny skateboard. - actually amazing stuff.
Take care,

Hi I'm trying to locate any info out there on a skateboarder named Allan F. Houck who owned 'Daytona Street Skates' in Daytona Beach, Fl in the late 70s and opened the 'Moon Forest Skateboard Park' in Ormond Beach in 1980. His partner Ed Baxter was also a skateboarder and won three titles during that time period. Thanks!

hello!
i'm still standin' and willing to chip in .02 here and there.
ok this is an old pic but it lends a hand to the fictional story. those guys were epic but no more a sensation than howell, ty page, logan gang, and the list goes on. Thatz howz I seez it! I could ramble on about the old days but I'll save that for another post :)
lookin back at those magical times, we were truly setting the stage to today's industry. these are golden times too! i'm thrilled at all the longboarders everywhere!!!! still gyrating down the sidewalks and racing here and there. cYa

Okay, Cliff... Would John Freis for overall and Torger Johnson for Freestyle be the correct answer?
By the way, I have found a Skitch Hitchcock interview in the Feb 79 issue of Skateboarder. The intro by Benito Schwartz says SH popularized the Gorilla Grip in Spring 75, at Del Mar. He also nearly got eliminated because he used it to go up and down the platform.
Torture me with more questions.

Craig,
Go back 10 years before the Del Mar Contest. See if you can tell me who won the overall and who placed 1st in Freestyle at Anahiem, 5/22&23/65? More questions if you can answer these.

I would pose the Gorrilla Grip question to Steve Cathey. He was one of the first I ever saw doing it.
Question # 2 would be good for Russ Howell or Chris Yandall, they were both on the podium with her.

Hello All,
Two questions:
1. GORILLA GRIP: What do members here know about the origins of this move? And was there one specific originator?
2. DEL MAR 1975: I just had to remind a woman working on a children's book which has a chapter on skateboarding that the first place winners at Del Mar were NOT the Z-Boys. The overall winner was a GIRL! Does anybody have more info who Michelle Brunot was?
thanks, Craig
Here's the plug for my new book. Will be a good one. Take care guys.
