GRASS?
On 12/21/2001 lbk wrote in from (63.208.nnn.nnn)

I'm all for the mission statement of the Grass Roots Association of Slalom Skateboarders but I am concerned with the acronym of "GRASS". If the pot references start showing up at events, sessions and/or t-shirts for the Grass Roots Association of Slalom Skateboarders then the wrong message will be communicated. I don't see how that will further the "goal of advancing the Sport of Slalom Skateboarding". Case in point; ask GBJ or BoBo how Johnny Law reacted to us running cones at G-burg. The local law enforcement officer acted as he was busting up a party in a public area. It would have been worse if we all were sporting shirts with "GRASS Skateboarding" written in block letters on the front.

Again, I am fully behind the written mission statement of the Grass Roots Association of Slalom Skateboarders but cannot condone the implied message of the name. Therefore, I propose that the name be changed to "Slalomer’s Heliocentric Active Team Spirit". My t-shirt would read, "I got the S.H.I.T.S."

Leo: The primary function of the different chapters in the G.R.A.S.S. Roots Association of Slalom Skateboarders is to promote slalom within each of its communities. This could take the form of events which may involve racing, demo's or even video screenings. It's where people can either find guidance or provide assistance; by bringing together the members of the grass roots community we will be able to share and build upon each others experiences in the hopes that one day you won't have to go far to find a race. If all this seems open to interpretation, this is totally by design, because...

http://>"...there could be something going on in your back yard!"

Once again, thank you to all who are getting involved.

I like Glens thought about building from the bottom up.
I think that is and should be the GRASS focus for now.

I like GBJ"s polished designer quality USSSF
National Organization at a managable level and pace.
And the efforts to create a quality environment from
the top down.

I like Claude's idea of creating USSSF like national
organizations world wide. And probably some of
the 'blades' running GRASS chapters will eventually
step up to the state and national challenge and create those org's.

Eventually, like the Transcontinental Railroad we will meet in the middle...the new breed of GRASS racers will be up to speed...the USSSF state and national org's will have their race programs developed and... Bingo! There ya' are....sweet!
By the way... is there a GRASS chapter in Utah yet?

GRASS sounds like a brilliant idea. We used to travel all over the UK to contests, and our parents loved the fact that we were INVOLVED in something (relatively) harmless. If we can introduce people to even half as much fun as we had then, wow, it'll be great.

There were 4 motivating factors behind my becoming involved in the GRASS movement...

*The fact that Alan had already gotten the ball rolling with his networking of the KHRT (made my step short and easy)

*The passion the Howard has shown with his desire to advance the sport (especially to the new guys)

*The proding and poking of Eric (The guy irrates me a bunch sometimes, but he was a sort of catalyst that pushed me forward into involvement)

*The desire to build a website that would allow me to practice organizing groups.

I think the G.R.A.S.S. thing is a great idea.
I'm with Hugh and believe that it's a bit premature to be trying to have "World Class" pro competitions. It's just my opinion.
I think that building from the bottom up instead of the top down is the way to go.
25 years ago I started playing Soccer with a group called AYSO. They are now huge, Soccor is huge in the U.S. - at a grass roots level. Big time soccer in the US is like saying big time bowling in Tahiti. It doesn't exist, there are teams and such, but it's not the driving force of getting so many kids involved. I believe that it would be better to spend time and effort in working on a slalom magazine, slalom related press, and building on the local races, get out and have fun, theme that we've been sucessfull with so far.
The semi-underground slalom cow hasn't been milked yet.

Hugh, Howard, GBJ, etc. I love this G.R.A.S.S thing.

Alright Brian! I was hoping you'd make the races grassy! I posted earlier yesterday that the last March date at Fountainhead might not be feasible because the park opens in Mid-March. (I think it was deleted because of other comments.) You might want to switch the race sites around and run P&R for March 16. Just a suggestion.

Hey I want to get on the g.r.a.s.s. bandwagon. I recently purchased the domain name eastcoastslalom.com. My site will be up in a few days. I was going to use the site to, of course, promote the east coast scene and the DC Outlaw winter racing series.

I also purchsed westcoastslalom.com. My original intent was to use it to poke fun at my west coast brethern. But if anyone wants to use it to promote grass roots racing let me know.

If anyone has any pictures of the Gaithersburg races or De Farm race send them to me I will post them up.

GRASS vs ISSSA
On 12/20/2001 hg wrote in from (208.14.nnn.nnn)

Think of GRASS as a bush-league (bush, grass ...) association of race organizers. Racers who get into it and want to learn more might want to join something like ISSSA.

The G.R.A.S.S. website is taking shape. 5 chapters on line awaiting info/pics/stuff to be sent for posting!

Hoping to be able to have some downloadable "canned courses" up soon (soon as we get em!) as well as links for purchasing discounted equipment through the efforts of KHRT/Turner and an anyother mfg who is willing to knock some bucks off their stuff for "the cause"... (get some free advertising too!)

No mission statement yet... but rest assured that this group will not be encumbered with overbearing rules and regs it will be an association of like minded individuals pooling their resources and talents in order to facilitate the advancement of the cone running science (we're going to do some racing)

I beleive that the commitment of this assoc will include being a viable resourse to assit other similar orgs in the pursuit of their missions. Input is greatly appericiated and all serious ideas will be put to the test at some point or another.

I am not the leader of the GRASS association... I am merely a webhost and the host of the AV Chapter (Whos membership is currently at one)

I invite anyone interested in hosting a Chapter in their area to send me an e-mail so I can get your page started. Those interested in being added to the mailing list are also encourged to send your e address to me.

Anyone interested in providing an on line tutorial on course setting, cone shaping, pumping, deck set up, or anything else slalom related is encouraged to write it up, include a bunch of pictures and send it to me.

I would like this new site to not only high light the activites of local chapters, but also be a place where novices can gain valuable info on this sport (gotta have pics though!)

Ricky - I just made an offer to Alan for providing slalom starter kits wholesale through KHRT, and this could certainly be extended to GRASS chapters. Also, I'm going to find out what kind of price we can get on the cones that come with the starter kits, though Dave G's cone proposal sounded pretty good.

hi ricky and all. i agree, i am still looking for cones. maybe some manu would understand that we would like to buy in packs of 20 or more (i want a minimum of 50) the only place i can find them right now locally is $10.00 for 6 cones with flanges that need to be cut off. this is at Big 5. the best cones i have personally seen are Tracker cone avail-through Tracker, 1 12" cone $3.00. i think Dave G is working on something, but i don't know for sure. my Visa is standing by.

Things are happening and ain't it great.

I have offered my assistance as G.R.A.S.S. South Coast representative/race promoter. This is exactly what I need to be doing. I already have a race in the works for the Jackson area. I think it would be good if anyone working with G.R.A.S.S. to promote slalom in their area were able to get discounts on the Starter Kits to be sold at local events or used as loaners for boardless newbies. Another item would be discounted cones for newbies. Would we need to get all the regional reps together for some training and "best practice" sharing (skating) session?

Let's grow G.R.A.S.S.
